Welcome to Moody Blooms! In this episode we prune our overgrown backyard planters. Trimming succulents is easy to do and can results in tons of new free plants.
Succulents are easy to grow and there are so many beautiful varieties. Succulents are fleshy plants that store water in leaves, stems, or both, and come in a huge assortment of interesting sizes, shapes, and colors.
As succulents grow they sprawl outwards and can outgrow their pot or container, getting quite unruly and in need of trimming up. When succulents become etiolated it can sometimes cause them to look less desirable. Succulent plants often need pruning just like any other kind of garden favorites, to control size, to shape them better, or to propagate them for more plants. Most succulents can seal off damaged parts, although it is always best to quickly remove broken or dead leaves, stems and/or flower stalks.
When cutting succulents it is best to use clean scissors/clippers or a sharp knife. If plants are diseased, avoid spreading the problem by swabbing or dipping blades in alcohol before starting or when cutting lots of plants.
Because new growth typically sprouts near the end of cut ends, simply prune stems to where you want new growth to emerge. You can train some to grow in different directions by cutting just above a small branch or bud that is pointing the right direction.
Once you have trimmed the cuttings be sure to let them callous over before exposing them to wet soil or watering. If soil is dry it is fine to place them back immediately into your pot or container. It is always best to plant succulents in well draining soil. The extra leaves can also be propagated as shown in our other videos. Be sure to check them out for additional info and tips.
Depending on what type of climate you live in can effect your succulent propagation success. Trimming succulents grown in-ground outdoors is best done in early spring just before new growth begins. Prune flowering varieties while dormant in the winter, or soon after blooming.
Succulents are so forgiving and most are very easy to grow and maintain. They literally the gift that keeps on giving.
If you have any questions please comment below and I will do my best to respond as soon as I can. I am also open to video suggestions, so please feel free to leave those in the comment section as well.

Have you ever experienced the stem withering away instead of growing new babies? Have you ever tried gluing the stem at the cut end to keep it from atrophying? Because I’ve had some great success with cutting and almost turning them into bonsai‘s. But then other times, the stems wither away and not produce anything even if it already had some leaves on it. Sometimes the glue works and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m curious if you know of a good pruning sealer for succulents to prevent the withering / atrophy. Thank you so much 😊
@moodyblooms
@moodyblooms Жыл бұрын
I have never tried gluing stems of anything as a pruning sealer. The only thing I have done is use a rooting hormone to speed up growth. I typically always get growth after I have beheaded any of my succulents.

Great video! You mentioned putting cuttings in dry soil and not watering for a week. What if I put cuttings in slightly damp soil is that okay?
@GoldieHoffmanComedian
@GoldieHoffmanComedian 2 жыл бұрын
Wow! great vid, and really great step-by-step guide! Like most newbies, I'm so afraid to prune and cut back but know you have to. Couple questions: 1) what happens if you don't remove the dead leaves and let them just absorb into the soil naturally? Is it just a visual/nicer decoration thing or is it bad for the soil/ plant? (If they're not due to rot/disease, but just older/ got less light and died like the ones you removed at the bottom I mean). 2) Also, when cutting, do you cut below or above the node? Or does it not matter as much one they're bigger pieces like the ones you have and are therefore much more established plants (than say babies, etc). Thanks! I'm addicted to succulents! lol
@moodyblooms
@moodyblooms 2 жыл бұрын
It would take waaaaay too ling for the leaves to be absorbed. They actually attract pests so you want them out mainly for that reason. The last thing you want is a mealybug infestation on your plants. They are a nightmare to succulents. As far as cutting I do it pretty much anywhere. Succulents can root right out of the bottom. I will say that a thicker stem will take longer too grow roots than a thinner stem. They will root, it just takes a bit longer. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching Goldie! Happy planting!! ~Mary Ellen

Can these pots be left outside in the rain? How deep is the dirt in that huge pot. It’s ok to plant in deep dirt?
@moodyblooms
@moodyblooms 11 ай бұрын
If there is proper drainage then your pot should be fine in the rain. We do not get too much rain here in Southern CA. Dirt goes to the bottom of the pot. Just make sure soil is very well-draining if in a deeper pot.

Does it matter what season you do this? i.e., did you wait until a particular season to prune these?

I enjoy your videos! Your succulents are gorgeous. I would love to have my succulents grown in open huge pot arrangements like yours but I live in Louisiana and we get so much rain that I fear exposing a huge container to the elements (not under my patio) would invite too much water for them to handle. Is it possible that I could somehow achieve this in a state that gets a lot of precipitation?

Deirdre Newsom Most succulents do not like wet feet and are subject to root rot if they get too much water. We had a ton of rain this winter in Southern California (way more than normal) and I started putting additional umbrellas up so they didn’t get overwatered. The planters in this video are mostly covered by umbrellas so you could try that. What succulents are you growing right now?

@@moodyblooms That's the issue I'm having because I bought a bunch of different varieties before I was able to identify each species and keep up with water and light requirements, I lost alot of them and took cuttings and propagated leaves in a "last chance succulent" pot I made. I have noticed that since moving them from indoors with bright light all day long to outdoors, covered but with morning sun, they are growing better. I think to give them their best chance I should probably identify the like species and break up the pot into others. If you have an email I could share a few photos with you. 😊 Thank you for taking the time to respond. 😁

What insecticide do you use to keep bugs off your outdoor succulents?

amzn.to/3tHdJ15 is my favorite. I buy the concentrate and add about two capfuls to a spray bottle filled with water. It lasts a long time too. You can buy the spray premixed but it is more cost effective to buy the concentrate.

i bought a succulent and it looks like the flowers on my succulent look dead, or they’ve already bloomed? i’m not sure what i should do, do i cut them?

Definitely cut off the old blooms. They attract bugs and take energy that you want to go to the plant. Please let me know if you have any other questions! Have a great day Sheldon and happy growing!
