Pruning Succulents

Spring is just around the corner (in the northern hemisphere) and it's time to prune your gangly and overgrown succulents! I demonstrate how to prune a variety of plants including Kalanchoes, Jade, String of Dolphins among others and show the results of those I've previously pruned.

Funny I was just thinking about you today and then your video came. 😄. I was thrilled that you identified my mystery succulent! The Kalenchoe Beauverdii was growing in another plant I purchased last fall and that silly thing just grows and grows tall. It’s curvy leaves make me think of a Dr Seuss illustration. 😆. Green hanging pots just about to go.... take 3 strings tied together. Put the knot at the bottom of the pot and thread the strings up the sides and though the holes. 🙂👍

Andrea, thanks for your highly informative and motivating videos on succulents. I hope this is a proper place to ask you a question. I have about 20 cacti and succulents. I guess they will reach a hundred, soon. Very soon. One of my succulents (which may be the same as the one I noted on your "Tour" video at 29'24" sharing a pot wet an Aloe vera), chose to live outside the pot, leaving only its stem and a few branches there and growing nicely outside the pot, with tens of upright new branches on the shelf. I guess it just wanted to move towards sun as the pot was getting direct sunlight only in the afternoons for a few hours. I have no idea on howto handle this without causing harm. Pity I cannot add its picture. It (most likely a Crassula) looks really healthy but aesthetically rather queer. Most importantly, it is prone to accidents... Thank you : )

Hi! I can picture what you're talking about - the Crassula 'Watch Chain' right? I would try to dig up all of the roots and leave as much soil around it when you transfer it to a new pot. Keep it in the same spot it's in now and hold back on watering for several days to avoid any shock from transplanting 🙏

It would depend on the type of plant but most should!

Your videos are the best! Just got some plant mail Is it better to root woody stem cuttings (ghost plant, aeonium kiwi) from the mail in dirt or water?

Thanks Crystal! You can try soil first and if they don't root w/in a week or so, you can try water. You may just want to go ahead and try water rooting the Aeonium since they're summer dormant (assuming you're in the northern hemisphere ;) )

I will be pruning my succulents soon. Do you have the hanging pot in full sun? I have one and it's stretching. I have it in indirect sunlight.

It's facing east and gets some shade from a pecan tree when the leaves come back in - early summer-early winter. Cut back on watering as much as possible and don't fertilize to reduce stretching and encourage more compact growth 🙏

I have a jade like the one you trimmed. Do you ever get yellowing leaves near the base? I try to only water when there's some shriveling goin on.

It is normal for the lower/older leaves to drop... do you mean the base of the leaves or the base of the plant?

Yellowing leaves = too much water! Falling leaves = too much water! Trust me, I murdered more Jades and Portula's than had hot dinners. If it alternates between shrivelling and yellowing you probably have not enough/too much drainage....too large a pot....wrong type of pot (try a clay). Good luck!
