Thank you for your video ! I planted two wisterias about three years ago on a metal arbor against a brick wall. Not really knowing how to prune, I gave it a go and now have a smorgasbord of vines shooting out every which way! I really liked the photo you showed with your cute little girl and the blooms in the all their splendor! Wow! Absolutely beautiful! You’ve inspired me to do likewise.

I have just seen your video and found it very helpful. We are in winter in Australia. My wisteria has grown very high over the pergola with the flowers, then leaves providing great shade in summer. Do you have advice how to cut back the long limbs(which I let grow too high) so the flowering will be closer to the pergola. I have to get an arborist with a tall ladder to prune the wisteria. Thank you.

Wisteria is pretty tough. When you do your next winter prune, cut back any growth that has gotten too high back to 3-5 buds from the main stem. hope this is helpful. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for the lovely response! A big hello from sunny Melbourne. Since you invited questions.....having just put my wisteria in (see below), it's a very young plant. (in the ground for a year and this is its first growing season). How much pruning should I do, given I want to train it 6 meters or so along the front of my verandah? I'm thinking that for the next few seasons I'll let it grow and just shape it for length and position, and get into the strict flower pruning when its, say, 4 years old (??) What do you think? Any advice??

Thanks a lot for the video. It's very helpful. We're in Australia, so winter is July/Aug. But we just moved into a house with a pergola with what looked like a dead plant on top of it. I didn't know until it bloomed beautifully in Spring, and my little daughter said it might be Wisteria. She recognized it from Anime series she's following. I can't wait to do a summer prune shortly and following it up with the winter prune. The Wisteria looks like it's fully established. I have couple of questions: - Do we need to give it some kind of fertilizer, and if we do what kind? - There are lots of what looks like air root coming down from the plan, can I trim them also? and how far back? Thanks a lot again for a very helpful instruction.

I've been waiting for a real cold snap but it's getting warmer every week. We are having 11⁰ a couple of days this week. The nights are still pretty cold. I am planning on making a video about training a newly planted wisteria. But it really is very simple. Basically you just tie in any growth you want to keep, to create your main framework. Then you simply remove all other growth back to 3-5 buds to create those flowering spurs. I will make a video on this later in the year. Thank you for watching 😀

The key is getting the plant to go where you want it as early as possible. At this Early stage, pick the directions you want the plant to go - one those lengths of growth, do not prune, just tie them in as they grow. One you have those initials leaders established, you can prune back any side shoots to 3-5 buds. I hope this is helpful. Thank you for watching 😀

Thank you so much for this series. I have planted several ( my nan had a lovely one so a special plant for me!) but have been very nervous as to what to do with them. I do have a question if you didn't mind: as they are young plants and are mostly a strong upright ( bought spiralled up a cane) with just a few thin shoots as horizonatals, do I still prune those shoots back to 2/3 buds? Will they then continue to sprout out and eventually form the strong horizontal branches or do I leave them alone for a while? Thanks
@TheFullyChargedGardener
@TheFullyChargedGardener 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, If you want to train the side shoots then don’t prune them off. Let them grow out and tie them to supports as they grow. Once they have reached the desired length, then cut them. This will then encourage side shoots along those laterally trained stems. I hope this is helpful.

@TheFullyChargedGardener
@TheFullyChargedGardener 2 жыл бұрын
It is perfectly fine to use string or garden velcro as these will not restrict the plant from growing. When it comes to growing wisteria in a pot one key thing is to make sure you keep it watered during dry periods and don’t allow the plant to dry out. But also make sure there is good drainage, so it doesn’t become waterlogged.

I have just acquired a very unkempt but mature 50+ year olds wisteria with my new house. Coincidently it managed to pull down its frame shortly after we moved in. I have managed to resurrect the frame and half hang the wisteria back on but it is awfully heavy and now even more droopy. So my question is, will it tolerate a super heavy prune as I try and untangle some of the mess and focus on the long mature branches or should I just tie it to the frame and hope for the best? I am a bit concerned any ties in future will be torn down anyway with the weight.
