I wish I saw this video several years ago. I had 6 beautiful bird of paradise for about 3 years without doing much, other than watering. The fourth year I placed them in the basement during the winter and most of the leaves got brown and dried. I left 3 plants outside the following winter, thinking that they had dies. To my surprise, 1 started shooting out new leaves the following summer. I was so happy and was upset for getting rid of the others. Up until now, I had no idea how to take care of them, so thank you so much for this video.

Thank you!! I was starting to wonder if I had to get rid of my bird of paradise. I got it about 3 years ago at about 4 feet tall and it quickly grew to my ceiling of 10 feet within Two years. I just left it be and it was growing funny against my ceiling but I thought it was fine. Until I got either spider mites or something cause it was covered in white spots and also was leaving a sticky substance on my floors under it. So I took it outside (finally since it is warm enough in Minnesota) and rinsed it down good but almost immediately Two leaves snapped since they were weak. So I most definitely will be trimming it back!!

Hi, what if one of the damaged leafs that I want to cut out has a new leaf coming in at the base of it where you just showed that i would want to cut it at? I feel like the old damaged leaf may be taking nutrients away from the new growth or perhaps stalling the growth from blooming faster is that true at all? Should I cut it off a little higher so not to disrupt or damage the new stem coming in? Or should I wait until the new growth has fully bloomed out and then cut the old damaged leaf's stem where you just showed?

If you choose not to cut it will it spread to the other leaves and what preventive remedy can I use for future spider mites. I already use Neem oil spray a couple times of a month for mealy bugs. The last question, once you cut the leaf off and put dirt on it will you get any new growth from that cut? Do you have an email address I can send a few pictures of my leaves before I start cutting?

Can you use the the leaves you cut off to propagate the plant to make a new one? Also the leaves on my bird of paradise are curling, am I doing something wrong?
@Mycityplants3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching. - Most of the time, curling leaves are the result of dehydration. To keep this plant happy: Ensure the plant receives a good amount of bright light, and regular misting (best to have a humidifier nearby). Do not allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Provide nutrients during spring and summer, + the pot should have drainage. If you are doing all this and the plant is still suffering, check for pests and diseases. - Unfortunately, I am not an expert on propagation 😀. Green Luck! 🌱

TERRYLEE I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT FATTER OR BUSH OUT EITHER, I ONLY HAVE FIVE STOCKS ALL TOGETHER AND ONE OF THEM IS THE DEAD LEAF WITH THE LIVING STEM.... thank you in advance TerryLee
@Mycityplants3 жыл бұрын
Hi Terrylee, Thank you for watching. - Dying leaf should be cut out where the leaf stem is attached to the main stem. - Bird of Paradise grows new leaves form the top. The plant grows fairly fast, especially during Spring/Summer. - Make sure the pot has drainage! - Establish a proper watering frequency. Allow the top soil to dry out as deep as you can test it with your finger. *** I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter. This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready for a drink to avoid over or under watering. Meter can be purchased here: bit.ly/2yuXVpc - Use a pencil, chopsticks or something similar to fluff up the soil around the plant to allow oxygen to get to the roots to help the plant to stabilize. Stick pencil into the soil as deep as possible and move it clockwise, repeat in a few spots. - If more leaves will start to curl and dye - re-pot the plant. Green Luck! 🌱

@Mycityplants Жыл бұрын
Hi Emily, New leaves will grow from the center of the stem. They will be shorter at the beginning but will continue to grow. :) The only way to keep the Bird Of Paradise plant at the desired height is to prune back/remove the tallest leaves when they grow to tall. Green Cheers 🌱

hey i need help, i was just relaxing in my room and a leaf from my plant had fallen and the stem is bent now, and i have no idea what to do at the stem it bent and now the leaf won’t stand straight ( it is a very tall stem and i think the weight of it made it fall)

Hi Kai, Thank you for watching! 🌱 The reasons why this happened: - Pot too small or not deep enough - Not enough light - Lack of drainage - Plant needs nutrients The folding leave should be cut off. You may want to support other big stems. Here is the video about how to add support: bit.ly/3inszEo Green Luck!

How did you plant your BOP (drainage holes, saucer on the bottom, etc.) ? I have a decorative vase with no drainage holes and would like to be able to place my birds of paradise in the decorative vase the same as yours.
@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandra, The planter I am using in the video comes with inner pot that goes into the planter's cover. You can see these self-watering planters here: mycityplants.com/collections/planters If you with to place your Bird of Paradise plant inside the decorative pot, make sure to add a layer of rocks (2-3") at the bottom to provide a space for the water to run to after each watering and avoid the plant to sit in water. Amazon has lots of rocks you can order for your plants amzn.to/3oumcnH If you wish to learn more about BOP care, here is our playlist: bit.ly/3h6j1OQ May your plant grow happy and heathy! If you cut a plant leaf in this way, can you keep it to grow another plant?
@Mycityplants15 күн бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching. The new leaf will grow from the center of the stem, between the other leaves. Therefore, cutting a leaf off a Bird of Paradise plant will not affect the growth of a new leaf. Green Cheers! 🌱

How long does it take for the leaves to regrow after they've been cut? I cut mine weeks ago but they look the same. Do they regrow or do new leaves come from the stem only?

I am so glad to find your videos! I have watched all your bird of paradise video!!!! Started trimming and corrected my watering. I have had lots of success with new leaves through the winter season but since the last extremely large leaf unfurled, the rest of the leaves started to get curly. The new large Leaf has curly edges too. I know she's not happy but I m confused between whether it is nutrients deficiency, improper watering or root bound. How can I tell the difference? Thank you!!
@Mycityplants3 жыл бұрын
Hi Queenie, Thank you for watching! 🌱 1. If you have the plant for over 6 months, it needs vitamins. If you are in the US, I would recommend the plant food I use: bit.ly/35qzXtf *** any other fertilizer - use half of the recommended amount. Watch my video about fertilizing here: bit.ly/3teZEaw 2. When to re-pot/ bigger pot. - If you noticed that the soil dries out too fast, and you need to water the plant more often; - if there is no soil between the pot's wall and the roots; - if the roots are sticking out the drainage hole. New pot should be 3'-5' larger. *** Plants in a bright light space, grow roots faster. On average - Plants need to be repotted once every 2-3 years. 3. Make sure to use enough water so the soil gets well saturated, and the lower roots are reached. 4. Test the soil once every 7-10 days as deep as you can. If the soil feels dry, water the plant. ***This Tool will help you to test the soil at the lower levels and establish a proper watering frequency: bit.ly/2yuXVpc 5. Pot should have drainage! 6. Keep the soil levels up to the pot's edge. Hope this will help to get your plant back into a vibrant state. Wishing you lots of green luck!!!

@@Mycityplants Thank You Juliette for your response! Looking forward to my next plant day!!! I am in Canada so doesn't seem like I can get that plant food here. :( I got her last fall. So I m glad to know it's not too early too repot her. I can see roots building up via the drainage holes but not sticking out but I haven't examined how root bound she is yet. I saw your one video with the giant plant thinking I was far from that and thought I was ok 😆😅 I always bottom watered until moisture was around 5-6 (once a week). Dialed to 7-8 since I watched your videos. Now that it's nicer out, I took it outside to shower the leaves and thoroughly soak the soil and let everything drain before bringing it back. I tried to keep the soil higher but it definitely doesn't stay that way for 7 days perhaps that's because there is not enough soil! Thank you for all your tips! I will give you an update!!! Stay safe!!

If Strelitzia is too tall I ll have to prune the tallest (newest) leaves, and that would mean ending the growth? cause new leaves only growing from the top ones, what to do to control its height..?
@Mycityplants6 ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching! You may prune your Bird Of Paradise plant back to get it into the desired height and width. New leaves grow form the center of the stem, between the leaves, so cutting back the tallest leaf will not stop the growth of a new one. Here is my complete guide about how to care for BOP: mycityplants.com/plant-care/bird-of-paradise-care/ Green Cheers & May your plant grow happy and healthy!
