Years ago a local farmer told me that the hatchet is the best fertilizer. After watching this presentation, it seems to be true about the holly. This is a perfect example of a plant responding to that old adage.

Also, how old are these trees? I apologize if you said that in the video and I missed it. I was so mesmerized by your wisdom and accent 😊

As you will see (around the 6.53 mark), David says he planted most of the specimens in his garden over 20 years ago. The other younger (ones in pots by our office door) are only 3-4 years old! That's how fast they grow and how effective they are as shapely evergreens to put into containers - they are invaluable for this sort of situation. Have you subscribed to our channel? What about the roots, is invasive? Thanks you
@OverdevestNurseries11 ай бұрын
As you may have noticed (near the beginning of this video) the big plant that David is pruning, is located right next to the house and path, and even though it has been there for over 20 years the roots have not and do not show any sign of causing any issues with vigorous root systems. Japanese Hollies are not noted for having vigorous root systems. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? I just love learning from you, thank you for sharing. A quick question, can you tell us where we can find those metal trellises behind you at 1:04 time stamp? They are gorgeous!
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thank you, that is great to hear, thanks for watching. The metal screening trellises you refer to were custom to our design in Pennsylvania We don't currently have any plans to have a new batch fabricated, but if we had enough interest maybe this is something we would consider, because we did have another person express interest as well. There's no rush, but at some point would you let us know how many you might be interested in and where you are located because obviously shipping has to be considered as well. Meanwhile, stay tuned because there's more videos like this one coming, in fact, we are wondering if you have subscribed to our channel? The steed holly good in drought ?
@OverdevestNurseries8 ай бұрын
That one (in David's garden) is growing in a fairly confined space and it is never watered! Once they become established, they are remarkably drought tolerant. But the secret is a good planting technique and regular (deep) watering until they get settled in and establish roots into the surrounding soil. Here's a link to another of David's videos that will show you how we suggest you plant it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqrFhWall96Xhtk Also, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. Very informative video, thank you! I have a dwarf Alberta spruce that has dead needles on the inside and just didn't look very good. Can I prune it to get it to grow? Also, where can I buy those black iron trellises that you have? They are so cool! 😄
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thank you, it is great to know you are finding our efforts helpful. You might be interested to know about this video (we have here on this channel) that will give you more information on your Alberta spruce: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2Srg3Z7rpiZrpY Regarding the needle drop, it is normal to see some of it at this time of year (it is just changing over from old growth to new), but they are also frequently attacked (especially if they are under stress... drought, poor nutrition etc.), by a little spider mite that you can't see with the naked eyes. They build up, sucking sap from the needles and causing defoliation. So make sure to water during any dry periods, perhaps put down a light dressing of a well-balanced fertilizer and mulch the spot too. Then we suggest you talk to the experts at your local garden center and see if they can guide you by supplying you with a systemic granular insecticide. 😉 Because we want to remain independent (and not beholding to any particular companies and corporations), we cannot tell you any specific brands, but your garden center experts will know which ones work best in your area. So, they should be able to help. In this recent video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5etiZiZpt1obq8 you will hear David talk about how coniferous species (like your spruce) do not respond well to hard pruning, so except for a light shear of the tips, they are best not trimmed. Finally, the screens you noticed in David's garden were custom made to his wife's design, so there isn't anywhere that we know of where you can buy them. But, maybe at some point David might be having another batch fabricated and if you keep in touch maybe we can get you included. Finally, presumably you are already subscribed to our channel. If you are not yet, can we suggest you think about it, because we are posting new videos all the time, and once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video it will turn up automatically in your feed. And if you are finding our videos helpful, it would be wonderful if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well. @@OverdevestNurseries Thank you for answering all my questions, your explanation was super helpful! I didn't even think that my Alberta spruce could have spider mites, but I will investigate that further and find out if that's the case. I definitely did subscribe to your channel because I find the information so interesting.👍 Thank you!
