My first eggplant harvest was bountiful without any pruning. They grew huge and I was giving away eggplants everyday for an entire season.

Same here I planted 6 eggplants. I only prune some lower leaves but left all suckers on. The plant stems are really thick like a tree branch very strong and I didn’t need any string support or stake. Still giving me loads of fruits everyday. Love it!

This works well. Summer just ended here in Australia and I applied this method to loads of eggplant plants and have had great success. I hand pollinate and don't rely on the bees. I prune and I pick the fruit when it looks edible or when we need food for dinner. I water daily so the plant does not get stressed and use high potash fertiliser (here there is a good one called "Sudden Impact for Roses"). Even in the bright sun I don't shade the plants as they love the heat.

Hi! Instead of having to tie knots to prevent fraying, if you put a flame to the ends, they'll melt and stick together, no more frayed ends! In fact I use the flame from a small lighter to 'cut' the lengths I need resulting in both ends melting and not fraying. Do be careful though, the ends may actually catch fire, stub them out or douse in a cup of water. Great videos, you explain everything so well! Thanks!

I know the feeling of wanting to garden and experiment and enjoy it, however, I have 3' eggplants, and I never prune and I get abundant Purple Heirloom, and Shooting Stars, and Black Beauties. Those leaves didn't grow on accident. They are feeder leaves and unless you see true fungal rot , let those gorgeous feeder leaves feed the plant and the bigger the plant, the more and better fruit you will get. I prune young plants for stability like peppers and more growth but I baby my eggplants and never take a blade to them. I do LOVE your vertical trellis, I have miles of the bailing string and u reminded me to trellis my National Pickling Cucumbers. Great vid!!

What kind of eggplant are you growing? The big ones? I grow the long skinny eggplant and o don’t prune suckers. I always have a large harvest cause i do not prune. I can understand pruning the large heavy ones but not the long skinny ones. I do remove the lower leaves for airflow and to prevent disease from water splash on the leaves.

@ranitpaul335310 жыл бұрын
Pruning decreases fruit production because leaves are essential for photosynthesis which will produce more fruit, if leaves are cut then the process becomes slow
@paduvihmkannel15426 жыл бұрын
although you are right, i would say that pruning decreases fruit quality. natural unpruned plants give the tastiest fruit, while the pruned plants give fruit faster.
@richardmang25582 жыл бұрын
Although I agree that the leaves are required for photosynthesis , too many leaves scrunched together provide habitat for tiny pests, mold and mildew. So , opening up the interior of the bush allows air to circulate and some sunlight to shine in which eliminates the habitat for pests which can make your plant sick. Prune just enough, find the balance.

@Cheri9808 жыл бұрын
+vicentemoretti8 You might try pruning the tops of one plant - after a month or so it will begin to produce more leaves at the bottom plus at the top. I fertilize my eggplants the same as my tomatoes, since they are in the same plant family as peppers and okra, as well - and an acidic soil.

I have two Black Beauty eggplants I've been growing on my sunroom. I didn't know to prune them, so I didn't, but I've been hand pollinating them for months to no avail. They just keep making flowers that fall off the plant, no fruits. What can I do? Will pruning them make them set fruit?
@hueynrolf927210 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem and I read that overwatering can cause this. So I cut right back on the water and they're starting to bear fruit. An excess of water is good for the plant, but not the blossoms.
@Aelanna10 жыл бұрын
Heuyen Rolf Good idea, but won't help in my case, as the eggplants are being grown hydroponically using the Kratky method. So, they're basically sitting in nutrient water all day. ;) I did prune them back today, and they look a ton better. They had really grown all over themselves into a mass of leaves.
@hueynrolf927210 жыл бұрын
Aelanna64 Oh how sophisticated, I'm low tech here. I am growing Japanese eggplants, habeneros, rosemary and basil on a large window box. Best of luck with your eggplants, I hope it works out OK for you.
@Aelanna10 жыл бұрын
Heuyen Rolf I'm trying lots of different methods to see what works for me. I am growing habaneros as well, I have those growing in a dutch bucket system in the sunroom, where I am growing tomatoes and peppers. I also have a raised bed and a traditional garden outside. Not a lot of tech involved, really. The Kratky plants are just sitting in containers of solution, and the dutch buckets use some PVC and tubing, a few buckets and plastic tubs, and an aquarium pump on a timer. I think I prefer gardening indoors, the bugs and animals are eating everything outside.
