In this video, you will learn how to prune your tree collards to make them shorter and more productive. Sequoiah @projecttreecollard shows the pruning process from start to finish in a patch of Jolly Green Tree Collards on her Grass Valley California farm.
Tree collards (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) are members of the brassica family. They are also known as Tree Kale or Tree Cabbage. Their relatives include traditional collards, kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, and cauliflower. However, unlike most of its relatives, tree collards are perennial. This means that, like a fruit tree or rose bush, they will continue to grow and produce year after year and without the need for planting new seeds or seedlings every year like traditional collards and kale. Tree collards are hardy to about 20° F (-7° c) and in mild climates have been known to live for up to twenty years! They are closely related to other perennial collard varieties grown in Mediterranean, Africa, the Americas, and other countries.
Sequoiah founded Project Tree Collard in 2015 and is dedicated to teaching the public about this amazing perennial vegetable. We sell rooted tree collard plants, cuttings, and seeds at www.projecttreecollard.org

Rooted a small, thin leafless piece of purple tree collard in water. Now potted in soil and starting to grow leaves. Love all your videos.

This is great. Thank you! At 9 feet tall, I knew something had to break. Problem is that I pruned them all the way down to the healthy base and have now lots of cuttings. Should I replant those cuttings? The root base is super strong and "rooted"

Great Video, is this for second year growth ? I have one central stalk, I could just trim the ends off?

Was that all one tree? My order from you is supposed to be here Friday... I'm excited! How far apart do you recommend them to be planted from one another? I got the purple collards (rooted) if that matters. Thanks!

that was a row of about 6-7 Jolly Green Tree Collard plants. They are planted about 2 feet apart for that dense "hedge" effect. Don't plant any closer than that. I often plant Purples 3 feet apart

Is there a recommended time of year / season to be carrying out the pruning? We're approaching winter here in the UK and last year many perennial plants were lost due to the cold harsh weather. Thx.
