In this video I'll show you how to pull a transfer case at the Pull-A-Part salvage yard. You cant bring jacks to the yard for safety reasons so you'll need to go about things a little different.

helpful vid, thanks. but maybe give the tcase a bit softer landing, to avoid bending those bolts or damaging the threads. and probably don't just toss it on the ground after either :D

wouldnt recommend this method if you plan on re installing anything..works great for the junkyard but my friend tried to do the same method in his driveway and put a hole in the radiator and valve cover, dented the hood outward as well as broke his exhaust manifold,engine mounts, and power steering pump when he dropped the engine that far.

Take some ratchet straps and place them on both sides of what ever you are after and use them carefully to lower the heavy part you need. Sometimes this will help save time by not having to disassemble every thing, I use this method for transmissions, rear diffentals. Plus it also helps prevent you from dropping parts on yourself

What's safer, bringing a jack into the salvage yard, or dropping a transfer case on your head? That rule makes a lot of sense.
@CT_Taylor

I think they should allow the use of a jack with either supervision or require you to explain exactly what they need it for... I can understand WHY they are concerned, but a lot of times it could be necessary.

This video helped me a lot. I looped a ratchet strap through the front doors and under the transfer case while I removed the lower nuts. Then I was able to easily lower the T case and reach the top nuts. It was super easy, and took me about 30 minutes. The hardest part was removing the nut on the driver's side that is behind the bracket.

It might crack or break around the mounting tabs on the transmission to engine. Otherwise, the tcase is fine. Just don’t chuck it on the ground afterwards lol it is only cast aluminum after all lol!

Thanks for the video.. ive taken a 242 off on my own Jeep by supporting the transmission and lowering it a bit.. ajd cutting a wrench to get to the top nut.. So i was thinking i had to do the same thing in the jy. But i guess i can just let the thing drop fully lile you did and have easy access to it lol. I was worried it would like break the transmission if i let it drop but i guess its all being held by the engine mounts.. which i didnt realize. Should nake ny trip to get a 249 off a 5.9 zj easier. My 5.9 zj tc is bad.. bad chain.. bad bearings. Other stuff.. makes lots of noises when driving. I suspect my transmission has issues too as it whines in 1st-3rd when rolling.. not sitting just rolling. But i cant afford the 46re and 249 together atm.. So i guess 1 outa 2 aint bad.

hey Matt I got to the six bolt part but there is this metal plate on the driver's side that has something to do with the linkage and seems to cover things up.I didn't see it in your video. I'm trying to pull an NP 242 off an '89 XJ. The bolts are 15 mm on the jeep I was working on. How do you get the plate off?

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L with the Quadra-Drive system with a bad transfer case. Was wanting to know if and what the difference in the T-case from an 00 to an 02 with 4.7L and Quadra-Drive is? I went to 2 different recycle yards and was told the T-Case from a 02 4.7L w/Quadra-Drive will NOT fit My 2000?? I'm looking at a T-case from a 02 because of it's price and low miles.

I'd go one further and recommend goggles. This is coming from a guy who got powder coat in his eye WHILE wearing safety glasses. They don't protect that well at all and let me tell you particles in the eye are a horrible experience I assure no one wants to go through. I have a phobia to this day about it.

depending on the junkyard, some leave the scissor jacks inside the vehicles. when I pulled mine, we used on of those (on top of a stray wheel) to support the trans pan. then lowered it slowly from there.....slightly safer, hahaha. great video still. you must've set up a cot at that place for a little while for these videos, haha.

Agreed. I got the Craftsman C3 1/2" 19.2v cordless impact for like $90 on sale at Sears, and it advertises a max of 200 ft/lbs of force. I've owned it for about a year now and it has been a godsend many of times.

This video is useless if you are trying to remove an NP231 case from a Cherokee that you care about i.e. trying to fix. After 4 hours of wrenching (or attempting to) the only way I see is dropping the whole transmission assy with the transfer case. Also if you want an SYE made in USA - you need to get an Advance Adapters manufactured unit. Rough Country and others are mostly Chinese (Outland aka Omix-Ada)

did mine just fine without dropping the whole thing...getting the top bolts off is a pain but we got it through the center console. did take us about 4 hours to get it out but i didnt have all the tools i needed or a lift..probably couldve leaned it back further on the engine mounts but i didnt want to break anything

The only issue I hit was 2 8mm bolts stripped on the front drive shaft to transfer case , so I had to buy drive shaft as well. But Pick N Pull told me I can return the drive shaft, and a friend managed to get them out for me.
