That's awesome! Several years ago I bought an inner tube and didn't realize it had a presta valve. I didn't even know how to pump it with air! I hated it. I just bought a used carbon gravel bike and it had a presta valve. I had to buy presta-to-schrader adapter and pumped up the tires. I really didn't have to buy that adapter because I didn't know two of my pumps had this feature where you reverse the rubber and fitting like you demonstrated in the video. THIS IS A LIFESAVER!!! THANK YOU!

Me four 🤣 I've had an irrational avoidance to presta but just got some holy rollers and the 2.5 tubes only came with presta. I have a little drawer full of adapters and connextors but none of them worked. Turns out I also have two pumps with this feature, a min i and a large so am so thankful to find this video, learn something, get over my phobia (actually a pretty good system once you use it), and save some bucks spending in stuff I really don't need. A guage would be nice, now I can afford one. Happy days, thanks again 😉👍

Hi, and thanks for your kind words!🙏 I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Regarding the replaceable valve cores, while some inner tubes allow for valve core replacement, this video is primarily geared toward those who are new to Presta valves. I aimed to keep it straightforward and avoid overwhelming beginners with too much information, especially since the majority of the innertubes come with the core that's integrated with the valve and only a small amount of more expensive inner tubes offer that option. However, I have created a tutorial on repairing bent valve cores, which will be published this Sunday. Be sure to subscribe and click the bell icon to receive notifications once the video is live. Thanks again!🙂

As a professional cyclist for 20 years, I can provide a couple of suggestions. In addition to this video. 1. Rotate the wheel so the valve is directly centre on the ground. Inflate the tube closet to the ground as opposite to what is shown in the video. It stresses the cord less and as gravity is working in your favour it doesn’t encourage air to escape as quick. 2. Inflate slightly over your desired PSI limit, when you disconnect the valve it releases some air and a few psi over compensates for this.
@cyclemaintenanceacademy

Hey Peter, thanks a lot for taking the time to comment and sharing your pro cyclist wisdom with us and the other viewers. Your ideas about rotating the wheel so the valve is in the centre and inflating the tube that's closest to the ground totally make sense. And that tip about slightly overinflating the tyre to compensate for the air release when disconnecting the valve is clever too. To be honest, though, in the context of our video, the overall difference these suggestions make might be negligible. But hey, I love hearing different perspectives, and I'm sure that these suggestions will be useful to some of our pro cyclist viewers. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, and I hope you keep enjoying our content!🙂

Why make it so much more awkward to carry out the simple task of pumping up a bicycle tyre by putting these stupid delicate valves on, which I had to buy a specialist pump for? @cyclemaintenanceacademy
@cyclemaintenanceacademy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, yes, good question.😂 It's the lock nut that is causing all this problem. First, it needs to be undone and screwed back on each time used. Second, it often bends and snaps when pumping. On the positive side, Presta valve is slightly easier to pump compare to Schrader (especially when using a hand pump) because it has no valve spring to overcome.

Ive used presta valves for years, and they always start leaking. First just a little bit, so i have to reinflate the tires every couple of weeks or so, but slowly but surely this gets worse, until after a couple of years i cant even go for a 20 minute ride. For all i know, maybe this is normal, or maybe its limited to presta valves, or it might be because i always choose the ultralight "racing" tubes... Im about to order some new tubes right now, and this time im going for a thicker/heavier tube with car valves - and a bigger pump, because those mini pumps are really annoying for pumping my 29er 2.8" MTB tires 😏

Hi, thanks for your comment and for sharing your opinion. I feel your frustration! It's hard to say what may cause the leak but It's definitely a good idea to experiment to see what works best for you. Switching to a track pump sounds like a wise decision as well, as hand pumps are typically meant for emergency use to get you home or to a bike shop. Hope the new setup works! 🙂

@cyclemaintenanceacademy
@cyclemaintenanceacademy 9 ай бұрын
Hey Norman, thanks for the comment and I get your frustration but let's aim to maintain this conversation without using any inappropriate language. Presta was introduced as a narrower substitute for Schrader valves that were to big for narrower rims on road bike wheels. However, there is no reason for using Presta valves on madern wheels aside from narrow road bike wheels. Schrader valves are more user-friendly and less prone to breakage. However, bike manufacturers continue to incorporate them into their designs, and consumers continue to choose them. As long as this trend persists, we can expect to see widespread usage of Presta valves.

Not that inflating the tire is difficult but there are a few steps like turning the internal adapter around. I ended up reading some article written by a third grade level thinker about how there's different valves but they didn't demonstrate how to actually inflate the presta valve. They actually made some really burnt out half a brain cell comment about how if you don't put the cap back on the Schrader valve that somehow your air is going to leak out after 300 yards. That's when I closed that browser and found your video which was a billion times better than that junk article

@cyclemaintenanceacademy
@cyclemaintenanceacademy 2 жыл бұрын
It depends. Presta valve is narrower so the rim hole is smaller. That makes the rim stronger. Presta valve is lighter than Schrader. Finally, presta valve can hold more pressure. However, the differences are so marginal and bike tyre manufacturers will soon introduce road tyres that don't require high pressure so these advantages are not noticable for everyday cyclist.

@cyclemaintenanceacademy
@cyclemaintenanceacademy Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, good question. The main advantage of Presta valves is that they hold more pressure better. That's why you mainly see them on road bike wheels where higher pressure (over 100PSI) is required. Car tyres don't require high pressure (they are usually around 30-35PSI) and Schrader valves are easier to use. That's why they became a standard for motorised vehicles. Tyre companies work now on new types of road tyres where higher pressure is not required to achieve lower resistance so at some point Presta valves might loose their main advantage

Hi, thanks for your comment. You might have a pump with a smart head, which can be used for both valves wiothout turning the pieces inside the pump head. It's also possible that your pump is only designed for Schrader valves. Did you managed to sort it out and pump your tyres?

I detest presta! They rarely work for me. Either no air goes in, can’t push the pump, or the air escapes straight away. I have 5 tubes in front of me, all presta, none working, same issues with two different pumps. I’m losing hair by the f#%^ing handful.

Why is everybody ok with presta valves, what a waste of engineering. Everything is shrader wheel barrows,cars, trucks, semis most bicycles. Every gas station compressor is shrader. So the point, now I can’t fill my bike tires up anywhere, and I have to unscrew a weak valve that can bend, it doesn’t save weight, I have to buy adapters that get lost. Who invented these inconvenient valves?

I don't get it because this presta valve is so delicate it's really easy to break. Plus it's easy to accidentally release air from it when attaching and detaching your pump. I don't know what was wrong with the standard, much sturdier valves. They worked fine for all time
@cyclemaintenanceacademy

Hi there, thanks for dropping your comment. Everything you say is right. Presta valves were initially designed to accommodate the narrower rims on road bikes. Because they're easy to manufacture and people still want them, they're still being produced.

Hey, thanks for the comment. You're right, Presta valves are not as easy to use as Schrader and are more fragile. That's why they wouldn't work on cars. Hi, and thanks for the comment. I completely understand your frustrations with the Presta valve. They can be a bit more intricate compared to the more common Schrader valve. Here's a practical solution for you! You can get yourself a Presta to Schrader valve adapter. With this handy little tool, you can easily use the regular air compressor at the petrol station to top up your tires. So, the next time you swing by a petrol station, simply attach the adapter, and you'll be topping up your bike's tyres like a breeze!🚲😊

My prestas lose more air just trying to attach the fitting or pump then they take on! I have a hand pump w a specific presta insert and lock. Is the pump valve able to stay on straight without me holding it in place? Pumping with a floor pump using one arm sucks.
@cyclemaintenanceacademy

Hey, thanks for the comment. The valve needs to go al the way in to the pump head. If you've done that and it still doesn't want to stay firmly then the seals inside the pump head might be worn and you will need to replace them or the pump head (or the pump if you can't find replacement parts). I hope this helps
