@Ogden Sikel Thanks for the video. Your movement looks already pretty good but there is still space for a lot of improvement. You can work with only feets, only legs, only core body, only shoulder and who guessed it only arms. When you combine all factores you become a little god in pumping. There is a nice Video of Vlad Popov who did a great job of how do well with your body to accelerate your longboard. I know how hard it is to teach someone to get the idea of pumping right. But I also want to mention something very important you didn't state (please correct me If I just didn't catch it up in your video): Wheelbites: Guys!!! Please care about your health. Most longboards are not intended to be that much pressured like it is happening when pumping. I started myself with a drop-through longboard and it becomes very likely that when you get too confident with pumping that you run into wheelbites because you hit the cut-outs of a drop-through longboard or the longboard itself in case of a top-mount longboard. A wheelbite occurs when the wheel is touching the longboard. And you can guess what happened to me after getting too confident... I fell very badly two or three times, but to my luck I am a god doing great rolls so I didn't got any injuries. > So if interested in pumping and I mean real pumping, then please riser your longboard properly to prevent wheelbites. You can test it by standing at the very left or right side of the longboard with all your weight and when you get stopped by the wheels it gets very likely you run into wheelbites. When preasuring your weight while riding there is more force than you could test with only your weight, so please consider this too. :) @Ogden Sikel So the most important question is: was that just a wheelbite? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHLSlZmNm7V8j9U ? :D PS: I surely would not ever ride with a "normal" longboard anymore. At some point you have to decide if you want to make it professional (hard learning and long distance pumping oriented setup) or you just want have some fun. I just tell you this, because the above instructions are based on many years of experience where I started with a normal longboard and and ended with a high end setup and a lot more knowledge) and I hope someone will read the above and prevent any injuries to himself. :)

I'd say yeah, they want to be lifting up, but dont force them to. when you go side to side it should feel natural but yeah they come up a little bit. I'd say switches between sides should be more sharp than smooth. It is a pretty sudden switch in weight and you wanna do that quite sharply.

@OgdenSikel3 жыл бұрын
Honestly it really depends on you and how it feels for your riding experience because everyone has a different preference. You can pump on any setup as long as your trucks overall are loose enough to turn easily. I don't even know what truck is looser for me I just tighten them up, try out the board, and adjust until it feels good to me. So while tighter back truck does work for some people, its all personal preference really.

I'm not as good as him but I've been longboarding for 5years. As for the wheels - depending on your board, but as a general rule... The bigger the more comfortable! Obviously also faster but harder to accelerate. Anywhere between 68/70 to 80mm is good, but again: if you're at risk of wheel bite play it safe. Hardness depends on you're planning to do with it. In general, for anything except freeriding, I'd say go as soft as you can because there's really no reason not to. Unless you want to slide with it, then it's a completely different story Bushings... ahah it's complicated. Want to go fast? 90/95A double barrels are your friends. Want to have fun on flat? I'm using 85As double cones. Want a good all around? Something like an 85 mix (one barrel, one cone) is probably a good choice. Consider that the boards length will influence the feeling of the turns anyway, so giving advice is really hard. Best advice I can give you: invest €10 more and get more choices ;) Sorry for the long reply

I thought carving which pumping uses slows you down tho
@OgdenSikel4 жыл бұрын
Carving isn’t exactly pumping. Carving slows you down because turning the board in long sweeps generates more friction with the ground. Pumping is throwing your weight side to side which generates forward momentum if done right, which actually is more powerful than the friction forces from the wheels therefore making you accelerate

How do truck width affect pumping ?
@OgdenSikel3 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen a huge difference? Depends on a lot of factors but outside of surfskates, smaller trucks are easier to pump. With surfskate trucks though the width is kind of irrelevant
@scheisstagАй бұрын
I am not a native speaker. But in my understanding what you do is carving. Pumping is when you take advantage of the changing height level of the floor: in a half pipe, quarter pipe, transition or pump track. So you need a certain floor for pumping. You cant pump on a flat surface.
@OgdenSikelАй бұрын
No. you are correct about pumping on a ramp, but this is also referred to as pumping. So I guess you could say there are 2 kinds of pumping. This kind of pumping is usually for longboards, and the other is usually for skateboards historically.
@scheisstagАй бұрын
@@OgdenSikel Thanks for your reply. I guess there is no definite dictionary for skate terms. And if its about language and everyday use its usually like that: even if a majority uses a term "wrong" then simply this fact makes it the right term over time. Because language is not about logic. Its just about what the majority does. And since I am not a english speaker I cant really tell you which term the majority uses. But at least "pumping" makes no sense regarding logic. Because it comes from using an air pump on an inflatable boat or using the handle of an old school water pump. Which are all up and down movements. Which is not what you show. Also this means you end up using one word: "pumping" for two pretty different ways to propel a skateboard: Which is confusing. 1: using the curvature of the ground to gain momentum by elevating or lowering your center of gravity relative to the surface. And 2: using the fact that rolls dont roll sideways to push yourself sideways off from a flat surface (True for TicTacs or the carving you do). Since language is fluid and not set in stone I would suggest you start using "carving" to spread the term and by doing so, as a side effect, educate your audience a bit about the physics involved. Since a basic knowledge about the physics makes it easier to understand and pick up the motion as a regular skateboarder, who is just interested in practice.
@OgdenSikelАй бұрын
I appreciate the reply, but you are in fact incorrect. This is absolutely pumping, longboard pumping is an entire genre that you can look up on youtube. Pumping is an up-and-down motion. on inclines, you push your body up and down. for pumping, you aren't just carving side to side-you are sharply carving while pushing your weight slightly 'up-and-down', just like you would on an incline, only you're addng carving to it. So if I were to tell my audience that this is carving, I would be lying.
@scheisstagАй бұрын
@@OgdenSikel Sorry, you are wrong: while its true, that you are "slightly pushing your weight up and down" while carving, this is not key to the movement. Every human even slightly pushes his weight upside down while walking or running. But since walking and running are meant to move you horizontal this are only byproducts, not key components. And every professional runner will tell you, that the upward downward movement is even unwanted and that they try to keep the vertical movement of the hips small since it only costs energy. And the same is true for the carving movement. Which is also a horizontal movement. And the forward momentum is, as I mentioned already, created by pushing in an 45 degree angle sideways from your wheels, which can not roll sideways (only back and forward) and allow a push off the wheels therefore (Pretty much like in ice skating. Or in sailing with a keel). The forward momentum while carving is not created by using any kind of up and down movement. (Why do we then move up and down while carving? We would topple over sideways while pushing us off sideways. So we need to angle our body in the opposite direction of our sideway push. And angeling the body means also lowering the center.)This is in total contrast to pumping in vert, in which the forward momentum indeed is created by an up and down movement of the center of gravity. You kind of "jump up" a half pipe from flat. And you also "jump up" halfhearted while going down: every movement creates a counter force: you moving up with your center makes your board roll down faster in the opposite direction. And this pretty much proofs, that a difference in the wording is very much needed. Because even you, the guy who made the instructional clip, is not aware of the differences in physics. With a fitting word (carving) the key components of the movement would be more obvious. And people would learn it easier. (My point is not, that nobody calls it pumping: you are totally right: lots of people refer to the "carving" as "pumping".)

dude I LITERALLY don't know what to tell you. It's a WHOLE GENRE of longboarding. I don't care if you think the name semantics are wrong, it is literally the NAME of the discipline. I didn't invent it lol

You say that rkps are best for pumping, but then you said that the dinghy is made for pumping and it has tkps, right?

Reverses are best for longboards but regulars are fine for cruisers
