you should turn it to the lowest flame setting first. Then after purging, shake it and purge again, repeat until no air comes out, only way to be sure there are no air bubbles. To fill- turn upside down press butane canister down firmly for about 5 seconds for small lighter 10 secs for a big lighter, turn over, wrap hand around for about 5 secs to warm lighter, then reset flame setting, light and enjoy

you can over-excess with purging and filling methods. I rarely purge my lighters and they work just fine. I do it once in a while, if I see uneven flames. This is a good instruction, short and ro the point

Ive found some lighters purge if you hold it upside down and have the button depressed enough for gas to flow while you fill it up.

Lol, it does work and prob the best results this way but be careful the order you do this as it can get dangerous real fast. Don't ask me how I know.

There's no dumb questions! Each time you refill a butane lighter, small amounts of air will get into the fuel tank. Purging gets rid of the air so you have nothing but butane in the tank, and it helps your flame burn consistently.

Any thoughts on a lighter where the fuel will not go in? Have purged. Zero fuel in lighter. Have pushed down hard using 2 different cans of butane. Nothing goes in. Doing the same thing on another lighter works fine. Is it possible intake line is clogged?

Some require special fittings. I have an ST Dupont that requires there fitting. None that come with some butane cans work. PIA, I've lost it more times than I care to admit. Just sits in a drawer now.

Do u do this of your lighter still has fluid in it? I often refill mine even when it's still got a decent amount of fluid, as I always like a full lighter before I head out for cigars with friends.

If you do this with fuel still inside, it'll waste the fuel. It's best to purge when your lighter is empty or low before you fill it again.

If you don't, the jet won't work. I don't know why but the jet will just stutter and not function well until the Xtra air burns out
