Awesome video. It seems silly but is worth it. A grocery store clerk taught me about the fuel. I had a lot of fouling and soot from my torches. I was constantly cleaning my electronic ignition systems of carbon from the cheap butane. She showed me 9x refined butane and said it is what she uses in her cooking...no "torch flavor" and less carbon. It wasn't but a few cents more and it works! I've seen 12x and higher refined, but never tested them. The brand my store sells has adapters on the cap. I've learned not all butane torch refill ports are the same. Some take specific brands better than others because of how the port is configured. The adapters helped more than I anticipated. I use my torch for epoxy knife handle making, cooking, getting rid of weeds in the garden, quick cutting plastic, plastic welding, and more.

There is no AIR in this torch, it is BUTANE in gas form. The liquid Butane is in liquid form under pressure! It turns to a flammable gas as the torch is opened and that makes the liquid turn to gas at atmospheric pressure . You do not have to purge this torch, just fill with the butane supply. It may help to cool the torch and heat the supply with warm water if you want to fill the torch easier!

When you turn the can of butane upside down, the liquid (if there is any left) will be at the bottom. When the valve opens, the "gas butane" will push the liquid butane out. Purging the butane pressure out of the lighter is important to let the pressurized butane can fill it.
@SaskHunting5 ай бұрын
This is what I have experienced:) this morning my wife wanted me to fill one of her cheap candle lighters; I slammed it in and nothing at all, no fuel would enter the lighter? I then turned it upside down and purged a little (not all the pressure) then tried it again, then the lighter would allow fuel. Experimented a little. Q: You said the air escapes while you fill (the butane displaces the air at the top). So why would you need to purge the lighter if the air escapes during filling?
@SaskHunting9 ай бұрын
I have personally found that you don't need or necessarily want to purge a lighter that has been maintained. For example; just the other day I needed to fill a cheap BBQ lighter that wasn't mine. When I attempted to fill it was so pressurized with air that it wouldn't allow butane to be added. Once I depressurized the tank it then allowed butane.

"If you release the pressure of the gas the butane level will actually drop" I have no clue what you mean by this. If the propellant gas is released that should mean the butane level would either stay the same or increase in volume because of less pressure no?
@SaskHunting3 ай бұрын
For example; If you can see your tank of fuel and it’s half full in the tank. (Knowing that the pressure in the tank is high) Now, if you were to turn the lighter upside down and release some of the pressure from the lighter, the fuel level will drop, thus allowing you to add technically more liquid fuel to the tank. Now this is splitting hairs in my opinion, also, this is just my layman opinion! The overall lesson here is experiment with your lighter and the situation:)
@inremveritas10 ай бұрын
So my torch is acting strange - i have refilled it only twice, it is new: but at my now second refill it has a really unstable flame, which spits fire suddenly and the flame is totally unreliable. I have purged it from the bottom and also just let gas out from the top, but it doesnt seem to help. Someone said I may have used impure gas, but wouldnt it then abyway take a longer time to be messed up than a couple of weeks? The gas is pure Butane and it says "almost ZERO impurities" ;) so yeah .. but it is not the cheapest i found. Okay so, what to do?

This feels like a weirdly complicated and confusing way to explain butane vapor pressure. You are calling it air, but that is just the gaseous butane. When you relieve that "air pressure" you are removing butane gas, and the liquid butane will eventually turn to gas and create pressure again. That will continue until you have no liquid. So you are simply reducing the pressure to add more liquid butane.

So, even when you depress the fuel reservoir the tank won’t purge any fuel? If the lighter is upside down while you’re depressing the fuel reservoir and nothing is coming out, turn the light right side up and continue depressing the reservoir. Now, if the lighter still isn’t purging any fuel, I would suspect the lighter is empty? If you can visibly see fuel in the tank, I would say you need to try and pressurize the tank by inserting a upright butane tank; not turning the tank upside down to fill it, but drop the upright lighter onto the upright butane fuel tank and inject the lighter with a few quick bursts? Now if that doesn’t add some pressure to your lighter? I would start considering the fuel reservoir is damaged in some way or clogged? Try poking a needle gently into the fuel reservoir to clean out possible debris? Let me know if this helps?

I think your information about the cans and shaking them introducing air and such is inaccurate. I'm pretty sure that butane itself is used as a propellant. That's why it maintains equal levels of pressure throughout its use. When pressure is relieved after continued refueling, the pressure in the can lessens therefore allowing more butane to vaporize therefore maintaining equal pressure. I dont think that shaking the can or leaving it upside for any period is going to have any different type of advantage or disadvantage. I could be wrong though I'm not physicist or chemist or butane torch maker. And I didn't come to argue or anything like that. Mainly just trying to be objective and understand the nature of torches and butane as I'm recently new to using a torch of this type. 😂 I will say that after I use my torch , I try to make sure it's as empty as possible, and I also try to keep the air purged both before refueling and before the first use after filling it up. It could be the torch I own but I did experience some spitting at higher pressures before realizing it needed purged. I just assumed the air came through the fill nozzle during the filling process though and not from inside the actual can itself.

Purging a lighter makes absolutely no sense unless is brand new and never has had a charge before, the gas above the liquid is the same thing as the liquid, as you refill it will condense, if that isn't happening that means your refill tank might be too cold, warm it up a bit with your hands and cool your lighter that should fix the issue.
@SaskHunting3 ай бұрын
Correct sir, I don’t always purge the lighter; only when all else fails. Also I never purge the gas entirely, I just release some of the pressure. You have no idea what you are talking about. There is no air in the lighter or can. There is butane in both a liquid and gas state. If not in a pressurized container at room temperature the liquid instantly evaporates. In a container a small amount evaporates pressurizing the container until no more can evaporate. Lighting the torch burns gas off the top, more liquid evaporates to keep the container pressurized. If you had the can right side up you could you could take the torch out of a freezer and gas would leave the top of the can and liquid would condense in the torch. It’s about temperature and pressure, purging the torch accomplishes nothing.
@SaskHunting5 ай бұрын
You are probably correct in your experience sir:) I’m not saying to purge the lighter every time just for shits and giggles. Only when the lighter doesn’t want to fill or allow fuel into the tank when you know the lighter has no fuel in it. Air is not the right term here. The introduction of the liquid butane displaces the gaseous butane.
@glosol224 ай бұрын
What air? If the torch is completely out of gas, and you hold the lighter valve open, it might be possible to equalize tank pressure with atmosphere. Thats the only way to introduce air into the lighter, and I would debate if that would even make a difference. There is no air in the torch. What you see in the torch with the clear tank is butane liquid and butane gas. No air. The gas comes from the liquid butane depending on temperature. Warm up a can of butane and cool the lighter, it will fill it right up. As you use the lighter, oxygen is not being introduced into the butane torch. How can it get into the butane tank? it cant. Its not coming from the butane fuel can, thats all butane, no air. Purging is not how this works. You are not letting "air" escape. That is butane in gas form, plain and simple.
@SaskHunting3 ай бұрын
I’m only going by what the directions on this particular can of butane says to do:) By no means am I claiming to be a professor of “lighter filling” ha! But, I’m claiming that this particular can of butane specifies in rule #1 Release excess air from tank before refilling. Then it specifies. Please follow your lighter instruction manual. #2 set flame adjuster to low. #3 refill lighter in upside down position. #4 warm lighter in hand for 10 seconds. Wait 2 minutes before lighting. #5 reset flame to desired height. You will notice the word “air” in the very first instruction. It’s just a wording specifying it’s under pressure:) I wish I could show a pic in the comments. I’ll post a video on the instructions I guess.

@@SaskHunting Ya know what? I just filled 8 new torches from Amazon, the manufacturers instructions said purge. I, being me, ignored that dumbness on all but the last torch. That's the one that correctly filled per manufacturers instructions. So I am eating my own words on this. BUT I still don't know where the air would come from. Actually, the only thing it can be from is the liquid butane after it turns to a gas. And since the "air" or more specifically butane gas is compressible, that's the pressure fighting a complete fill of liquid butane. Not like that matters much, it's gonna go back to gas anyways before it can burn.

There is no air, that is only butane vapor. At 14 psi environment, you can't force that into a tank that has higher pressure. All "purging" is doing is releasing butane. And you keep saying gas when you mean liquid.

Yes sir, I’m only reiterating what the actual butane container stipulates in its directions:) the refer to it as “air” I’m assuming it’s to not complicate the directions for the average user with semantics? Who knows

Butane refills don't work. It shouldn't be this hard

You are correct sir; it shouldn’t be this hard:) I do all this if my lighter is having issues. If you understand why your lighter isn’t running efficiently, take corrective actions when needed, you should have a consistent lighter:) Or I could just be full of shit!

I've noticed near the end of the video you lighted up your lighter next to the butane containers!..That was a very dumb and unsafe thing to do!..You're lucky these containers didn't explode on your face!..
