How To Purify Water With Bleach We need clean drinking water to stay alive. With bleach and an eye dropper amzn.to/2bclAjr you can purify safe drinking water. What if your water stopped running, or your community's water was contaminated? Store unscented bleach in your emergency supplies so you can purify water in emergency situations. To purify one quart of water use 5 drops of bleach. Include eye droppers and measuring spoons along with a chart of how much bleach to use to purify water. Make a water purification kit with bleach for your emergency water preps. Store 1 gallon of water per person per day for emergency situations. Know that a quart is 32 ounces, and a liter is 33.8 ounces. Make a strategy for safe drinking water. Treat water with household bleach containing 5.25-8.25 percent chlorine.
Volume of Water to be Treated Bleach Solution to Add
water bleach
- 1 quart/1 liter 5 drops
- 1/2 gallon/2 quarts/2 liters 10 drops
- 1 gallon 1/4 teaspoon
- 5 gallons 1 teaspoon
- 10 gallons 2 teaspoons
Stir and let stand for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor. If it doesn’t, repeat the dosage and let stand for another 15 minutes before use.
If the chlorine taste is too strong, pour the water from one clean container to another and let it stand for a few hours before use.

I have always used half a cup of bleach to a gal of water for home cleaning and, YES, I have also noticed so many bleaches have extra strength written on the bottles these days, once hom the bleaches do smell stronger. Now, I have a degree in biology and a PH.D in acoustic physics, bleach is used a lot in both to kill crap that gets on your hands, and soap and water too, I use Dawn and water, for me it works better than any other soap or dish soap and I am in no way advertiseing it, I use off brand bleach because of the price, Dawn is just damn good. Great video Ma'am, well stated, keep up the good info.

Thanks, my household was recently under a boil water order. I have a zero water filter, (which removes most chemicals) but it not safe with microbes "go figure". So I took my tap water added bleach let it sit for awhile then ran it through the filter to try and remove any chemicals from the bleach. It appears to be a good solution to boiling my drinking water. I am refining the method.

Granny, thanks for posting. Love your bunker! If I treat 5 gallons in a clean airtight plastic container, store away from light at average temp of 80 F, about how often do I need to re-treat?
@AlaskaGranny
@AlaskaGranny 7 жыл бұрын
Clean, airtight, and away from light are correct. The temperature may be the only concern,. I would heck it every 6 months. Pour some out, and taste it. It may taste flat because particles of oxygen in the water work their way out. Pour it back and forth between 2 containers to mix oxygen back into it. I had a few Ozark Trails water storage jugs leak along the seam at the bottom while in storage. I like the Reliance Aquatainers amzn.to/2gyZdaZ I use those at Granny Camp and on hunting trips. They get banged around and still last for years.

To clarify: I took it that you were asking if you should put the drops of bleach in the water before storing it for long term... if that's what you meant, I'd add the bleach bcz you never know what you may need to use it for. What if you stored water for washing (without bleach) & then, oooops! It turns out you needed it for drinking? Better to be prepared for either scenario, right? Me... I would not trust water stored long term for drinking unless I had purified it when i stored it.

If you use bleach to purify water for drinking, allow it to sit for 30 minutes before drinking. I am not familiar with the process you are doing to water your plants, so I am not sure if that is the answer you are searching for.

How much of bleach for 55 gallons water barrels? And how long does the water last?
@AlaskaGranny
@AlaskaGranny 5 жыл бұрын
55 gallons would use 3 Tablespoons. Water can store indefinitely if kept in a cool, dark, place. Light allows algae to grow. Water may seem "flat" because the oxygen in the H2o is gone, just like leaving a glass of water next to your bed overnight. Add the oxygen back by pouring the water back and forth between 2 glasses or containers a few times to add oxygen back into the water.

Here is the information I use, as found on Washington Dept. of Health. Purifying by adding liquid chlorine bleach Treat water by adding liquid household bleach, such as Clorox or Purex. Household bleach is typically between 5.25 percent and 8.25 percent chlorine. Read the label. Avoid using bleaches that contain perfumes, dyes and other additives. Be sure to read the label. Cloudy water should be filtered before adding bleach. Place the water in a clean container. Add the amount of bleach according to the table below. Mix thoroughly and let stand for at least 60 minutes before drinking. Treating water with household bleach containing 5.25-8.25 percent chlorine Volume of Water to be Treated Bleach Solution to Add 1 quart/1 liter 5 drops 1/2 gallon/2 quarts/2 liters 10 drops 1 gallon 1/4 teaspoon 5 gallons 1 teaspoon 10 gallons 2 teaspoons Caution: Bleach will not kill some disease-causing organisms commonly found in surface water. Love your instructional videos. Thanks from Australia. BUT the best bleach to buy for water purifying is industrial bleach listed as between 4 and 6% sodium hypochlorite and sold specifically for use in Restaurants or Food Preparation areas. This will ensure you get a bleach that does not have all the nasties that supermarket cleaning bleach sometimes has. As #AlaskaGranny says, rotate your stock well before the best-before-date as the effectiveness of the sodium hypochlorite reduces over time.

@AlaskaGranny
@AlaskaGranny 7 жыл бұрын
In an emergency situation where regular water service has been interrupted and water is contaminated, drink bottled water, filtered water, or boiled water. If you cannot boil contaminated water, use regular unscented chlorine bleach to disinfect or sanitize water. Stir and let it stand for 30 minutes. If the chlorine taste is too strong, pour the water from one clean container to another and let it sit a few hours. Bleach effectively kills bacteria, viruses, stops smells, and the bleach breaks down. It's effective germ killing alkaline property is neutralized quickly. Over time, stored bleach loses its potency, and only water is left. Bleach is a safe way to treat contaminated water. If you choose not to use this method, there are plenty of other ways to ensure you have safe, drinking water.
