How to Put a Zipper in Cuddle® Minky Fabric and Faux Fur Fabric

Zippers are one of those things that sewists sometimes tend to shy away from - but we’re here to tell you that adding a zipper to a sewing project isn’t just a great idea, it’s easy!
This week, our National Educator Teresa Coates continues her weekly Sew Together Tuesday educational video series by taking our popular faux fur, Cuddle® and Luxe Cuddle® minky plush fabrics and, you guessed it, installing a zipper.
These fabrics aren’t what you’d traditionally sew a zipper in, but as Teresa shows, they work great and add a more functional element to your sewing project.

I am making a costume and need the zipper to be hidden. Can I use an invisible zipper? I am using cuddle.

Yep! You certainly can use an invisible zipper with Cuddle.

Stitch across the bottom of the teeth of your cut zipper and the pull will not come off. If you throw cuddle in the dryer on low with a damp cloth all the fraying will come out and it will not fray again. You need to sew from the zipper side. This wore me out. 😳

I have made 4 Santa Claus suits for my husband, using red cotton velveteen and good quality white fake fur. I make the fur detachable. That way the fur and the velveteen can be washed (separately of course). I have used both snap tape and zippers, attaching one half to the suit and the other half to the fur. (I prefer zippers and buying the zippers by the yard seems to be the least expensive, but I prefer the plastic teeth over the metal ones. I trim the fur away from the nap about 1/4 - 1/2” from the seam edge depending on the pattern and then baste the seams and sew the zipper in to be hidden. It works fine. My husband has washed the suits dozens and dozens of times over the years. I didn’t know you are only supposed to have fake fur dry cleaned, so maybe some fur needs to be cleaned that way, but not in my experience. He fluffs it by combing it with a good quality dog brush after its washed. Thanks for the information on the wonder tape. I’m getting ready to make a teddy bear with a heatable rice pack to put in the body. I’ll be putting the zipper in the back seam of the bear. I’m making it with lux cuddle and I think that will make installing the zipper a breeze.

I am trying to make a Santa suit, with detachable fur. I do think your advice is very useable and good for my intended use. What about installing the zipper, which is about 92 inches long. the bottom of the jacket. There is not a lot of information on doing it. The reason for the detachable fur, is the red on the suit often bleads red, which can give the white fur, pink after sending to a cleaners. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

@@ShannonFabrics thank you, for your advise. Just curious, if any one else have ever asked that question before . That would be a great segment for the sewing of fur advise , would be a great knowledge for anyone making a santa suit, or trying to make one. It would save many Santas, the headaches of pink fur. vise white. (santa does look good in pink, lol) the fur on a santa suita there is a lot of white on the suit. any further ideas would be greatly appreciated.
