Well I hate to admit it but we have put tubes in some really dry rotted tires before and often lol.. Make sure to clean out the inside of the rim real good if it's rusted, getting out or off anything that could cut it...

All Tires Used to Have Tubes in Them

True, but back then cars were not driven at 70 MPH. They stopped putting tube-type tires on cars in the early 1960s, but heavy machinery and even motorcycles and bicycles still use tube-type tires. The reason I'm asking is because I've been contemplating putting an inner tube in my spare. The tire holds air well, but it is an older tire (from 1996) and I'd like to see how it holds. It will be a spare on a pickup truck... 1989 Ford F150

Tubeless tires are more puncture resistant than tube-type tires. A simple nail will tear a tube at highway speeds, a tubeless tire will just slowly leak. I've done my research, but most people say tubes should not be used in tubeless tires unless necessarily required, like in your case. But I'm just curious to see how it works in the real world, and not just someone's theories.

that's true about the nail but now they sell stop leak for tubes and sell tubes with the stuff already in it - I've never had any trouble with a tube in a tire

youre using that tire machine the wrong way to break down the tire. it you look on the bottom there is one of the legs that has a raised triangle looking piece. lay your tire on that will hold it from slipping. then you press DOWN on the handle to break the tire from the bead.. not pick up on it.. lmao
