I have always done the reverse. Rather than wielding the eye drops like a weapon and going in from the front, i have found approaching from the rear/side putting my left hand under their chin while using the thumb of my left hand to part the eyelid. The heel of my right hand is resting on the head of the dog, so if it moves the eyedrops move with it and don't jab them in the eye. I will have to make a video of it - its so much better and natural feeling. Edit: Also, do it before feeding or a treat so they associate it with something good. Try to only part their eyelid when the drop is about to fall from the bottle. Another commentor mentioned ulcers - don't worry it will be fine with the drops in the vast majority of cases. My older dog (about 15 now) is a Lhasa Apso who for the last 7 years has had 8 (unless ulcers or other complications then more) eye drops a day of three + types. I also have done insulin injections twice a day for those seven years. Your daily observation of your dog is the best weapon against these sort of problems - when their eyes get worse or something is going on with them, you as an attentive owner will know, get them to the vet and follow the treatment to the letter. Vets are usually very good at providing correct diagnoses and help/advice/medication.

I could use a straight jacket for my dog. Calm is not possible. How do I hold my 8 lb miniature pinscher's body still, hold her head still, and hold her eye open with one hand while placing the drop with the other hand? Not easy at all. As soon as she realizes a drop is coming, all bets are off. She pulls, pushes, twists, and closes her eyes. Complete resistance.

Just noticed yesterday my 2 dogs left eyes are draining, one of them a lot more than the other & bought some eye drops last night….did not go well, the only eye drops I saw at persmart was this gel kind and if I can’t get it in the eye it just rolls right off, a liquid might’ve been easier. I try to quickly squirt some in her eye while I’m holding a treat firmly in one hand but that’s not super accurate but worried she might bite if I try to hold her head and force it and since she’s a big dog I don’t want to take that chance I’ll try this technique with a muzzle but if that doesn’t work I guess it’s off to the vet 😩

@@lolly5453 hey! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I did end up muzzling him and I found a way that works wonders. We were able to put the eyedrops in in 5 seconds flat. There's a special harness vets and pet groomers use to clip nails, it lifts your pet off the ground with a sling under their bellies. This prevents them from thrashing around too much, (which my dog still does because his eyes are sore poor thing), but they become much more manageable. It's still a two person job, one to help stabilise the pet in the hammock and one to hold they eye open and put the drop in but it's so much easier! If you're looking for the hammock, just search for pet clipping hammock or pet nail trimming harness and I reckon you will come across it on Google.

@@AdrianMark So happy to hear you found a way! We are finally making progress too, after a very frustrating and upsetting start, we’ve found a way that works - but I did actually think of the grooming harness thing, so it’s a coincidence you mention that! Thankfully, one day my dog just decided against the run/fight/hide tactic, and will now cooperate for just long enough to get it over with!! Think he’s realised it’s easier that way! Can very much sympathise with your situation- it’s so hard being responsible for helping our pets, whilst being fought off and causing stress for them. Good to know you and pup are doing better and I hope pups eyes are on the mend very soon!! ☺️🤞🏼💖

OK, so this comment now after making another about 4 months ago. regarding the impossibly docile doggie in the picture compared to the hugely ferocious 7kg Maltese-Jack Russel cross terror my wife and I faced. Wifey got bitten twice or thrice. I got the nip once. And ferocious terror was having none of it. Enter the dragon - in the form of little dried lung treats. In desperation we thought let's just try that old trick - take your meds, get a reward. So I got me some cheap welding gloves to use as protection. I grabbed and held HUGE TERROR's mouth and wifey did the dangerous drop act. Then after that first attempt and success we proceeded to offer the treats. Now understand this - this terror had never ever succumbed to any such bribery - would just sniff at the offering and turn up the snooty nose and begone! Not this time however! It was like magic! Huge terror suddenly turned into begging, tail waving little thingy! So then, two little treats later and there was a change already. Still had to drive the now terrified terror around for a while to sooth the nerves. To cut the story short - after about a week or two - wifey can now basically put the drops in all by herself - just with the promise of treats! What used to take 10 minutes of struggle is now over in abut 15 seconds with drops into both eyes and the beautiful little doggies as docile as you could get. That's my experience - good luck to you if you have such a small doggie. Too bad if your HUGE TERROR is indeed a HUGE terror weighing 35-50kgs....I wish you well in your struggles.
