Thank you! Not walking on them has its advantages😉

Great video! I can ask you ... Do you have sensation in your hands and fingers? Do you have strength and movement in your hands and fingers? Thanks and sorry for my English
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
Thank You 😊 I can feel the initial touch below my level of injury, but not able to decipher pressure. I also can’t feel pain, temperature and have no proprioception in my lower limbs. My hands and fingers have some sensation more acute towards my thumb and index finger and more on the right than the left. In terms of strength, I have my wrist extension, wrist flexion is there but weaker and have no finger strength unless I use my tenodesis. Hope this makes sense?

If you wear close-toe shoes all day, do you have problems with your feet swelling up at night then? Or maybe your feet spasm more when you take them off?
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
My feet will swell up during the day, especially if it’s hot. At night with laying down the swelling by the morning usually comes down. Depends how swollen they get, if that doesn’t do the trick I put a pillow under my feet to elevate them. Never had an issue with taking my shoes off but it’s definitely hard to put them on halfway through the day when my feet are swollen.

@@QuadLife101 But you never have any issues with them spasming?
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
@Grant Kitson I do a little, but not as much as other peers with an sci. My spasms usually happen mostly when I’m changing into certain positions, but they’re usually pretty minimal. I just have to be careful when I transfer not to lean back too much, otherwise it kicks me back and my whole body goes into clonus.

@@QuadLife101 Do you have a certain time of day/night when you notice an increase in your spasms? Maybe right away after you wake up and start your morning routine or possibly towards bedtime, as you're getting into bed?
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
@@grantkitson5344 yeah in the morning when I wake up definitely. If I have to go pee as well my spasms will increase. And they are days where I have more spasms than others.

Why you don't put on socks in your boots?
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
I usually do in the winter, but don’t really care in the summer and it’s just one less step to take to get ready. Saving time and energy plus with an SCI everything below the level of injury doesn’t sweat. So there’s no point of putting on socks unless its to keep warm or compression socks for circulatory purposes.

With your SCI could you feel a foot massage?
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
Depends on the individual. Everybody with a spinal cord injury can present very differently even if the injuries is at the same level. For me, I would be able to feel if somebody is touching my foot and giving me a massage, but I wouldn’t know how much pressure they’re applying and it wouldn’t feel the good feeling you get from foot massage being able bodied. It just feels like something touching my foot, but without knowing how much pressure they are applying. It’s hard to explain I hope this makes sense.😊

Thats a lot of work especially with boots. I think I would be barefoot since I couldnt walk anyway. Socks or boots in the winter so frostbite wouldnt be an issue, not being able to feel temperature.
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
That’s the reality of being a quad, everything takes more time and effort, but with time and perseverance you can make anything happen and get better and more proficient with it. I usually don’t put on shoes if I stay home, but if I am out and about I do put on some footwear with a hard soul to protect my feet. More specifically due to the fact that I’m unable to feel pain and temperature below my level of injury. I also usually put on my footwear on my bed in the morning after I get dressed as it is easier and faster to do it that way, but it’s always good to know how to do it from your chair as well.✌🏻

@@QuadLife101 That makes a lot of sense now. I have since read that those with a spinal injury above a certain level ( I think its T-7) can have potentially life threatening blood pressure issues from something as minor as a cut on their foot or otherwise minor injuries. Ive seen nothing yet that such issues are present with those whose spinal cord is damaged lower on the body, though.
@QuadLife1013 жыл бұрын
@@donreinke5863 I’ve never really heard that… I mean we do have a lower blood pressure, and also our blood circulation isn’t as efficient in our lower extremities, so we are more prone to blood clots and what not. The reason behind wearing footwear is more related to the lack of pain sensation. So if we do get a wound below our level of injury it could get from bad to worse because we can’t feel it. It can also take longer for something to heal because blood flow especially in her feet isn’t as efficient as in an able-bodied person. If there is constant pressure in a certain area especially where it’s more boney they can turn into a bedsore as well. We basically have to make sure to protect our skin as much as we can to prevent a wound to get infected and turn into a sore.
