This is somewhat correct, to go from 2wd to 4hi the vehicle should be in motion under 62, Toyota cautions against switching to 4hi while stationary.

My 2017 Tundra has had issues with the four-wheel-drive since I had it brand new. My truck has 59,750 miles on it right now roughly 250 miles from running out of warranty. I hope they can fix it under warranty otherwise it does not like to go in and out of four-wheel-drive high or low and back to drive again. Sometimes it even grinds almost like there’s gear spinning and going against teeth or something.

I have an appointment with the dealer today for them to look at it. They said it would take a couple hours. Hopefully it’s one of those things that could get fixed with a part that they have in stock

Some Solenoid thing. About $1000 if it hadn’t have been under warranty at the time

Similar problem with my 2015 Tundra with 58k miles. 4HI wont engage unless I turn off and on the vehicle with on 4HI mode. Same process with the 4LO, but in neutral when turning off and on. From switching to 4LO to 2WD it disengages fine. I need a new battery hopefully that fixes before switching that solenoid.

I have a 2019 Tundra 1794.. i followed that procedure to a T.. however, going from 4wd low back into 4wd high, i experienced some very loud gears grinding and a click back into 4wd high. I waited a couple days and tried it again with the same result. Is still under factory warranty, contacting my dealer soon.

Thank you for the no nonsense info! Fine point. I think After you switch to 4hi while driving UNDER 62. You can then go faster than 62. You just can’t change from 2 to 4 or 4 to 2 when driving higher than 62. Is that right? The manual isn’t perfectly clear.

Good question. Says to switch under 62 but once on 4H, if you can drive over 62 or not!

I heard your not supposed to use 4 wheel drive on dry paved roads. Only slippery roads or roads with loose gravel etc. but I also heard you can run into issues if you don’t use your 4 wheel drive at least a little bit a few times a year. I live in Texas though and we only get slippery roads maybe twice a year.

As long as you are on a nice long stretch of straight road, switching in to 4H won't hurt anything. Just as long as you are straight and not turning. I have a stretch of road I do this on to engage the system during the dry months if I am not off road or in snow.👍 I do it about once a month or so.
