Those tires made the job easier for sure! They had a soft sidewall which is great for working it by hand. For tires with a stiffer sidewall, not so easy. The stiffer the sidewall, the more difficult to do by hand: Bridgestone YLC's: soft sidewall- easily done by hand Vega Reds: Medium sidewall- do able by hand, but challenging MG Reds: Stiff sidewall- forget about doing it by hand! Tire tool needed (we use the Tire Pryr)

I’ve just watched a video on using the scissor tool. You guys should race, hands vs. tool. Haha. Thanks for this video though, it’s inspired me to try by hand only without screwdrivers.
@StahlRacing
@StahlRacing 2 жыл бұрын
Haha! The tires in this video were Bridgestones, which had a soft side wall. In a race of hands vs. scissors using the Bridgestone's I'd bet big on me winning by hand! Now throw in a stiff sidewall tire like the MG Red that we run now, and scissors wins no question! I can't do the MG Red by hand!

I Just bought Evinco Reds and the sidewall is stiff as stiff can be. Doubt the hand method will work at all.
@StahlRacing
@StahlRacing 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the hand method works great for tires with a soft sidewall, but for tires with super stiff sidewalls like the Envico and MG Red, forget about by hand! We use a tire pryor for the MG Reds. We've been meaning to do another video showing how to use it, but haven't been able to get to it yet.

Thanks for the vid. I had to give up...seems impossible! Everybody just seems to pop them on, I tried for like an hour and I'm gassed now.🤷‍♂️ Going to see if American Tire Depot can pop them on for us...and I'll try again next time after to talking to some people at the track.

It is hard, especially at first. No doubt there is a learning curve. Cold tires are harder to do. New tires are harder to flip. Some rims are easier than others. Rears can be harder than fronts. There are a number of variables. It is more about angles than strength but I wrestle with them more than Kacy does. There are some tools out there that we see people use at the track use and they make it look pretty easy with them. Good luck.

@@StahlRacing Thanks for the reply. Being able to relate is helpful. I do this for my son and the learning curve with some things has been intense. Though it can be discouraging at times, we will get there. Thanks again, I really appreciate it!👍

Thanks for the good video. I have mine on the first lip but the other sides getting them popped on is extremely hard. And have tried hands, clamps around the tires. My slicks are new and are extremely stiff and hard, no where near as moveable/wedgeable as these some are. Me and my dad have tried, me and neighbor. Regular tire shop (might not of had the right mini tire tools) mower shop wouldn't take them, heating them up really hot somehow help i hear? Trying to figure it out, I got to lol
@StahlRacing
@StahlRacing 3 жыл бұрын
The tires in the video had a soft sidewall, which really helped when doing them by hand! A stiff sidewall tire is a totally different story lol. This past season we moved to the MG Red and the sidewall seems to be enfused with titanium. Doing them by hand isnt really possible. I highly recommend a tire tool for tires with stiff sidewalls. We use the Tire Pryr and it works great for us: cometkartsales.com/Tire-Pryr-Kit-for-5-inch-Wheels.html It's not cheap at $150, but your hands will thank you! I've heard of people heating them up but we've never really tried it, except putting them in front of a heater if it's cold. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions you may have! - Kacy

@@StahlRacing thanks for the info! I did see this kind of tool that looks like it'll work great if nothing else works, just wondering are most all of these racing rims aluminum like mine? Gotta be so careful with the material to where it dont mess them up
@StahlRacing
@StahlRacing 3 жыл бұрын
Most American made karts use aluminum rims while most European karts use magnesium rims. The Tire Pryr will work well on both. The only caveat is that it's metal on metal contact when using the tool to take tires off, so some minor scratching can occur.

If the sidewalls are soft like the Bridgestone's in this video it can be done by hand, but stiff sidewalls are another story. This year our club switched to MG Reds. The sidewalls appear to be reinforced with titanium. We cannot do them by hand. We picked up a Tire Pryr to help. Totally worth the $150 Thanks, Kacy
