Love this QAYG method, especially using some decorative stitches as you add each piece of fabric. How do you join these blocks to make a quilt?
@ArtGalleryFabrics3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial! I am making a Part 2 to Quilting as you go where I show you how I like to join my blocks. I don't like using the binding strip method to piece my blocks. I like to sew my blocks together and press the seams open and lay my top on the backing and stitch in the ditch. It makes for a prettier outcome and you don't have to worry about quilting just stitching in the ditch to secure the backing. That's an easy and quick way I like to do it! If you wanted to use the binding strip method you will have to place a backing fabric under your batting before you start piecing you pieces onto the batting.

I love this idea, couple of questions. If you were to make a quilt using this method how would attach the blocks together and how would you attach the backing fabric?
@amandawilliams22663 жыл бұрын
You can start out with the backing on there and just make it one inch bigger on all four sides then you take two panels you made put them back to back right sides facing stitch them then press the extra over your raw edges to finish them ,if you search that up you'll find a few different ways to do this!

Hi i just wanna ask is there a specific sewing machine for quilting? I am keen to learn how to sew. I have no idea yet.
@ArtGalleryFabrics2 жыл бұрын
Great question! There is no specific sewing machine for quilting, because you can quilt on almost any machine! I would recommend using a walking foot that is designed for your machine to make it easier for the three layers of fabric to go through your machine, since a walking foot has another group of feed dogs. I hope this helps and remember to take it slow when you're learning. Happy sewing! 🤗

Okay, I have questions. 1) Does the wider quilting lead to the batting pulling and slipping more after a few washes? (Obviously I've dealt with this problem, but it was actually a purchased quilt, not one I'd made.) 2) Why backstitch when the edges are going to be bound when you attach the blocks and do the final binding? Also, it looked like you weren't consistently backstitching, so is there actually any significant advantage to that extra step other than perhaps anchoring that first line? 3) Why aren't you sandwiching a backer fabric? All that quilting will disappear on any backing applied later, and it creates the same risk of the batting progressively falling apart within each of the blocks because it's not fully connected. Are you going to double stitch everything once you pick a final project and size your backing? A matching bag set would be cute, but I'm having a hard time seeing how you're going to give it much stability without a heavy weight double sided fusible interfacing and a heavier weight broadcloth, especially for a tote bag, unless you like the floppy variety.
@ArtGalleryFabrics3 жыл бұрын
Hi Katie, When quilting, the more stitches you do the more secure your finished quilt will be. I like to quilt no wider than 5" apart when quilting quilts to avoid sagging or pulling. I usually tend to backstitch when I start and stop a stitch line. It's a habit of mine. Just makes things more secure and if I stop in the middle of a project I know none of my stitches will unravel. You can definitely use a backing fabric for each block and then to attach your blocks you will have to use the binding strip method. If you don't want to use the binding strip method you can sew your blocks without backing and attaching your quilted blocks to your backing with the stitch in the ditch method. I have a part 2 Quilting as you Go video showing these two methods to attach your blocks that will be coming out soon! For my tote bag I was thinking of creating a drop in lining with fusible, I have done this before and really love the way it turns out. Hope this answered some of your questions. Stay tuned for the next Quilting As You Go video! Happy Sewing!
@jonniekendall88823 жыл бұрын
Do you add a backing if you turn these into a larger project?
@ArtGalleryFabrics3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I would add a backing if your making a table runner or potholder or large quilt you can also not use a backing for your blocks and attaching the backing later after you sew up all the blocks and stitch in the ditch to attach your quilted blocks to the backing. Totally up to you and how you want your finished project to look. You can also use a backing for your blocks and use the binding strip method to attach all your blocks if you prefer. I am creating a part two video to Quilting as you Go that will cover all of this! So stay tuned! 😊
