I have realised, that most bad habits or addictions can be fairly easy to control or subdue under heavy emotions. There's a weird phenomenon i have experienced, and it may or may not be true, but when my girlfriend expressed that even when i was never angry at her, she felt uncomfortable knowing that i have bad anger issues and i should learn to control them, I did it in like, maybe a week or so. Because that felt so final, it was this heavy emotion slapped to my face, that i had to. Similarly a lot of drug addicts or like alcoholics, tend to let go of their bad habits under heavy emotions too, I would love to look deeper into this, so that my understanding of addiction and it's relevance to emotions increases. Still, the best way to leave any addiction is slow, gradual progress. All of you reading this, i hope you let go of your parasitic habits!

probably because changing a bad habit is also when u face a major emotional event like when a person realizes his parent is in financial trouble he will definelty try to get into a good college instead of spending his time aimlessly because they just encountered a major event like also how people value there life after a life and death experience i think major events or a major emotional events are strong enought to override our bad habits its my specualtion after all
@anhhy5486
@anhhy5486 Жыл бұрын
Well it simple really, its because of your brain. Think of addictions like your brain auto piloting it way to pleasure, and heavy emotion is like a big jerk to the brain to wake it up from auto pilot mode. That why a lot of alcoholic who successfully become sober just said they wake up 1 day and just drop it and never touch it again, they just wake up from the auto pilot and realize wtf they were doing.

When it comes to addiction it's crucial to not do it so progressive in my opinion. When the addiction is bad you need to go through a withdrawal period that can be really hard: bad sleep, anxiety, lack of enjoyment doing any other thing, etc. This is a necessary process that can last from a few days to weeks. I think that the main idea of this video is good, relapse is part of the process and it's important to see the big picture. Every time you "fail" you will learn something, you'll become more and more aware over time, but don't be a fool, you have to try hard every single time. The plan since the beginning is to never do it again. Some people succeed at killing the addiction first try and you should try to be one of them. And in case you end up failing, don't doubt yourself, keep on trying and you'll eventually see progress. Btw it's also important to learn about your addiction, knowledge is power, and if you feel like you can't overcome it ask for help

Important Takeaways- 1. Don't indulge in the fantasies that your mind creates of them. 2. Extinguish that bad habit flame as soon as it lights up. Do NOT think of it. 3. The less time we spend on it, the less frequently we do it, the more awareness that we bring about it, the weaker the bad habit becomes. 4. It's okay to relapse sometimes. The keyword being sometimes. Just zoom out and look at the bigger picture. 5. Practise progressive deloading. It's going to take a couple years, but eventually you'll get there. Only if you take action with proper planning.

I'm coming back to this video to thank you. I'm not sure if this is the video that helped me get out of my youtube shorts scrolling addiction but it might be the one. For the past 7 months I would write down each day whether I controlled how much I scrolled on my phone or not. I made myself a small calendar and if I did well I would draw a small green tick mark, if not - I'd draw a red "X". Thanks to your advice about monitoring unhealthy behaviours and trying to get better even just a little bit each month made all the red "X's" turn to green tick marks. I have no idea if you'll ever read this but I really wanted to thank you for the content, it has helped me change for the better.

Everything he says in this video is true. 7 months ago I was addicted to my phone to such an extent that I had up to 16 hours of screen time on some days. When I realized this, I decided to spend 1 hour less on my phone until I was satisfied with the effect. Currently, I am on my phone for a maximum 80 minutes per day. You have to do it slowly, if not, your mind will want to find replacements and if it doesn't find one, you will fall back into the bad habit faster than you think.

notes from this video: • You need to start from the amount that you can do. You must ask yourself this: "How many times do I do this bad habit in a week or a month?" For instance, let's say that you do the bad habit everyday. Next month, could you decrease it by 2 or 1? Probably, right? This is crucial. You need to start from the amount that you can do and overtime you'd have drastically reduced the amount that you do the bad habit. Remember, it's not a sudden drop, it's a gradual decrease. • Make a long term plan and trust it. The benefit you get from this plan is that, you're no longer afraid to relapse. You can make progress even if you relapse. Relapse does not equal fail. • The most crucial part of the day when you do mess up, is to be aware. The moment the thought gets into your mind, kill it, right before it becomes a fantasy. That's when it spirals out of control. Don't indulge in the thought. Literally the moment you do, say no or think of something else.

Most people who are addicted will freely admit that they are addicted, or they will admit to some extent that they are addicted. However, knowing something and stopping are completely different, and people all the time refuse to stop, using excuses like: "What's the point?" ,"I like doing it so why stop", or the one I used "I just couldn't care less. Later on, I've realized how bad it was for me personally and looking back I knew it was bad. However, I didn't stop and it ended up costing me for my whole life after that point. In the end I don't think I ever recovered from it, and I probably never will.

Should be noted that unlike progressive overload in weight lifting, trying to break an addiction is much different. In weights you can just up the difficulty each time you try and get stronger predictably to achieve your goal. With addiction, once you've realised it destroys you, and considering all the psychological baggage someone might carry from it, it's really hard to convince your brain that this slow of progress will eventually heal you. Not to include the fact that being too soft on it can lead to just being convinced that even some certain amount is good for you when it definetly isn't

i just started a project today that is supposed to help me get rid of my addiction till the end of the year, it works in the exact way you said not to do, from multiple times everyday to zero. im gonna stick to the original plan for now and see how it works out, im gonna put in the work, but if it fails im going straight to your method. you are right tho, i do think i can do way better then just getting rid of it slowly and that i cant waste my time. it is very possible that just the start motivation didnt wear off yet or that it is unrealistic, we will see. thanks for the great video and thanks for reading.

A better metric in my book is successful urge suppressions, some people are in position where they cant escape the urge, so they are counting the no of successful urges they suppress in a day, maintaining a streak of this metric is really motivating but in the long term the number of urges you get will reduce so it's not a linear progress graph. And it's true, it's a graph of will power development.

In my case, reducing like this never worked because the longer I maintained my addiction the more I would get addicted to it. For me, what worked more was actually not doing it and having time goals that I would celebrate (1 day sober, 5 days sober, 7 days, 30 days….) because the longer I didn’t give into it the less I wanted to. Of course, I still would relapse even after many days, but I wouldn’t reset the time unless I relapsed twice. When I relapsed twice and reset the time I didn’t beat myself up for it, only admitted I did a mistake and tried again. That’s what worked for me, anyways, everyone is different and not all addictions are the same ❤

For some people, quitting cold turkey actually works, though I haven't managed to quit sugar that way. Skipping days of soda drinking also didn't work, especially not of I drank one every other day. What did work was still gradual, but it was replacing soda with an icetea that didn't have much sugar. Then I've gradually been drinking less of that too. It is going a lot better, but I still eat a bit more sugar than I should. I do drink a soda once in a while now, but it is for special ocasions, I don't allow it to become a habit. Do what works for you.

ironically, 2 months ago i quit porn and fapping the way that you said that i shouldnt do it. I just woke up one day and decided not to fap for the rest of my life. Now its been months without fapping but i used to fap once a day. I just forgot about my addiction completely and made myself busy . I didnt even get any urges. I dont really know how its gonna be in the future. But until then, its a long way. Love❤
