I was raised by very unorthodox and young parents from a couple of liberal but not to rational families, but they raised me pretty rationally. I remember (and always will) the day I asked my father if god existed when I was 4 and he told me that, basically, he couldn´t answer that question and that actually no one could, so it was ok to come to my own conclusions. I was never raised to make anyone proud but myself, was allowed to shafe my head when I got to admire a bald videogame character, and could also chose my clothing. Whenever I got in trouble, they would always have my back (with teachers for example) making me feel that even if I fucked up, I was gonna be saved and that made me very secure. We had sometimes serious money issues, but they always took our education as a priority to have a nice car, or living in a expensive neighborhood and so we always had lessons of something (even if we went by foot haha). They never treated me as a typicall child and so, by felling a little excluded (though I was sociable), I got to feel I was observing everyone. Also, as I was spending all day in my grandparents place while my parents worked (so as my other 6 cousins), they use to give me advice on how to have better arguments againts them regarding God and obedience. I think I will never be able to thank them enough.

only a few years late here.. but as a fellow scout, mainly, have to say that you are one of the most rational, perceptive and engaging voices in my virtual world. and the competition is almost immeasurable these days. I was widowed very young and also tried to be like your father in raising my son. one thing particularly struck a chord and interested me in this video. in what could be considered a detour from the scout’s path, I similarly sometimes played devil’s advocate quite convincingly as a way of encouraging skeptical and open minded thinking. anyway, much respect and thank you for your contribution to civilisation Ms Galef. How to Raise a Rationalist Kid? 1) Start with having a kid. If you have zero kids - your chances of raising a rationalist kid are close to zero. 2) If you already have kids - to raise them rational - try to be rational yourself and kids are likely to pick it up. 3) You may teach rationality tricks to your kids. That would help too, but this is by far less important than steps 1 and 2.

My 11 year old son seems pretty skeptical and has since he was wee little. I would say the key is that he hasn't really ever been to church except for weddings but he has been to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, the tours in Dinosaur Provincial Park where you can hike out to the bone beds, and to the American Museum of Natural History. When he was about 4, he came back from a birthday party where one of the gifts was a "bug blaster", some sort of thing that makes rubbery bugs out of molds or something. We were out back, can't remember what I was doing but he spotted and picked up a ladybug and asked me "dad, where do bugs come from". Not wanting to drop a fixed idea on him I said, "well, there are 2 schools of thought on that. Some people think bugs evolved over long periods of time along with all the other animals. Other people think God made them when he made the rest of the animals." His response: "Daaad! Don't be silly. God didn't make bugs he's a man!". I think he was thinking of Morgan Freeman.

My father was very much like this when I was a child, most times when I asked a ‘why’ question his first response would be “why do you think…?” He was a design engineer and his most likely next response was - “can you think how we can test that?” When he didn’t know he never minded saying and would often say - “I don’t know - how can we find out?”. I have to be honest it was sometimes exhausting as a child not just to get an answer- but it was amazing when you found something out. Our own children are grown up and very curious and challenging, so I have learned the hard way that it is even more exhausting as the parent! Boy is it worth it though and I am forever thankful to my father for it. That brings me onto possibly the most or least rational decision of my life; saying yes when someone I met 21 hours earlier asked me to marry her. It seems totally irrational to say yes in such a situation as how could I really know? But actually those 21 hours had been spent talking at a level I had never experienced with someone before. Someone that had grown up in a loving, but incredibly controlling, non questioning environment. She had essentially screamed “why?” into a void all her life until old enough to be able to find answers for herself- without ever quitting. It made me realise how easy it is to be questioning when you have been taught to be, how hard must it be if you don’t have that. I could perhaps flatter myself that this was a perfect execution of the stopping problem and that I as she was the most incredible person I had met up to that point (and I had met some pretty amazing people) - then she must be the one for me. However, I also fancied her something chronic😂. Either way it was obviously a good decision as we are still together 34 years later and she is a huge reason why our children were/are so enquiring, and she is still the most incredible person I’ve met - although I happily admit my biases on this 😊.

Your father sounds hilarious, and being popular at school is a serious handicap longterm.
@wellesradio3 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Being popular for all the wrong reasons is a serious handicap. Having once worked as a high a high school teacher I've been witness to kids who were popular for all the right reasons and also seen how that anticipated a happier future. The difference is that the popularity of these kids was the result and not the aim of their temperament and behavior. It also depended on the school environment, of course. Some schools are just miserable places that don't take kindly to an affable person. Other schools are full of well-adjusted people. And that environment changes from school to school and year to year. So, no, being popular at school isn't a "serious handicap". Learning bad behavior in the pursuit of popularity is the real danger and a terrible life lesson.
