I remember reading about a man in the depression era. He had a child and no job. So for food, he soaked raisins in vodka to get the pheasants drunk. He came along and collected them at sundown. They could not fly up to roost. When he ran out of vodka, he took newspaper and cut it out into a cone. He put a raisin in the base of the cone, then a sticky tar just around the inside edge of the cone. The pheasant would stick its head in to get the raisin and the cone would stick to their head, blinding them. Again at sundown he came around and collected them.

@@marcelinodiaz549 as an avid hunter and fisherman, I agree with you. I hate 8out of 10 hunters. Driving in a truck and shooting animals on the road is not hunting. Shooting everything you see, is not hunting. There is no hunting ethics left in this shit world.

Nothing natural about this it is a travesty of everything that is natural. Pheasants are in effect chickens bred for shooting, no sport, no challenge just slaughter fun for lazy people

As a lad, many years ago, I raised pheasants as a 4H conservation project. We got the chicks, fostered them by sleeping out in the building where we kept things safe and sanitary and so on. We were required to maintain green vegetation in the enclosure to aid in returning the adolescent pheasants to the wild. All-in-all, it was a wonderful experience. I was too young to hunt pheasants but in my adult life, I have enjoyed the processed meat from specialty purveyors. Were I to be in a survival/self-reliance situation, I would still go for chickens. Smarter people than I would study pigeon culture. Parents are so devoted that they will raise their young (if you tether them to the nest) until you are ready to harvest them.

I know this is an old video but in an outdoor lighted enclosure you should shoot for 10-12 hens per rooster to prevent them from competing. Even with the blinders the roosters can see the big long tail feathers on each other and peck at them. This has been my experience at least.

I saw a pheasant farm and some of the bird looked pretty beat up. Those blinders are a good idea. Came from a farm in ND bitter winters killed a lot. I used to go out after a bitter snow storm find them and take the ice off their beaks soothes could live. Just being out there flushed them up and it helped many live. Now in Iowa. the public hunting is big but very few birds.Theu used to restock and it was a huge industry and great source of income for small towns. Not so much anymore. Wish more farmers would get into it. I like your attitude that they become food source instead of chickens. I hated to clean the chicken coop. LOL They people that make comments about the feed lot don't understand.

good set up. I seen one just like it not as big or as many perchs. but it had electric fence about an inch or so from the ground just outside the chicken wire.and a couple more up higher and out a bit further. keeps anything from digging I suppose and maybe climbing all over looking for week spots and scaring the birds.

Dumb question but do you try to tame some of them? Are ringnecks even tamable to begin with? I’ve heard mixed things about them and rather talk to a person who raises them and are experts. I got a male I know he will never be tamable but if I can get him a female and raise some chicks maybe I can tame a couple depending on what your answer is

Great layout. Best of luck. After losing a large number of birds we trapped 32 raccoon that were killing them. On release day , into high corn and brush about 16 Hawks showed up. When the hawk screeched the pheasants panicked ran into the open and got killed. I love to hunt pheasant behind a good dog. But where I live I have resigned myself to Turkey and trap shooting. How many can you comfotably raise on about 1/4 acre?
@Rambooutfitters
@Rambooutfitters 7 жыл бұрын
This pen here is 50 by 50. You can raise a lot of birds on a 1/4 acre. This is the requirements by Michigan for raising pheasants in captivity. When it says specs its talking about the blinders on the pheasants eyes. With blinders you need less sq. footage, without you need more. The enclosure size for birds older than 14 weeks shall be a minimum of 100 square feet. b. For more than four pheasants without specs, the horizontal cage size shall be increased by 25 square feet per bird. c. For more than six pheasants with specs, the horizontal cage size shall be increased by 15 square feet per bird.

@@rodneyzurek4900you must not have done things right then. Stocking pheasants definitely works because they were imported to the USA from China they aren't native. I shoot pheasants every year that I've put leg bands on. 1 to 3 years old. They get released at 7-8 weeks. You can't sit in the pen and talk to them every day of course they will tame down then. Plus you need outdoor pens. I would agree if you raise them inside a shed and release them they won't do good but if raised in a indoor outdoor pen you will have success. You do have to buy good birds though as well. There are some dumb one's out there.
