Yeah ranger rolls are good shit. It's really easy to look over their necessity, but in a cold weather environment they are ESSENTIAL. Any non insulated liquid you bring into the field with you should be stuffed in a ranger roll, and then placed in a water proofing bag in any environment less that 32 degrees outside. In extreme cold environments, covering your canteens in a pair of socks is not enough. Roll your canteens into your ranger roll (insure the lid is secured), place both ranger rolls in a water proofing bag, and keep all 6 pairs of your cold weather socks in the water proofing bag with it to prevent them from freezing and possibly getting damaged. Your 123 batteries for your PEQ 16, AA batteries for your PVS 14, and AAA batteries for your red leans headlamp should be placed in ranger rolls as well. Even CLP can freeze if it's cold enough, so you might want to place your cleaning kit in their too. Your water proofing bag compresses, creating a vacuum in which the internal temperature is less likely to freeze because the lack of ambient air to cool. Place your water proofing bag in your main pack, and if you surround it with your sleeping system, it is very unlikely to freeze or become damaged. You'll be issued a Nalgene and insulated carrier for any cold weather environment. The construction of the Nalgene in combination with the insulated carrier prevents it from freezing as you wear it externally on your kit, so long as you zip it up all the way. Unfortunately your camelback becomes nearly useless in the cold. It's large volume and mass make it incredibly likely to freeze, rendering it out of commission. It's nearly impossible to properly insulate, even inside your pack. This is why keeping your canteens from freezing in your pack is so important. The only functioning hydration sources you have are your Nalgene and your two canteens. If you didn't secure your Nalgene carrier all the way, and it freezes, you better hope to god your canteens aren't frozen too.

That's great advice about insulating with your clothing. A lot of people won't think about their batteries draining due to the cold.

While I have very little interest in actually joining the military, I was in cadets as a teenager and can appreciate what it is you're trying to teach here. I can only say that I wish I knew about this technique for rolling my shirts much sooner, since it's incredibly compact for use in backpacking.

Are you referring to MOS AIT or other extra training opportunities? There will likely be things offered to you such as Airborne school, but otherwise it is usually courses applicable to your MOS and/or unit and position like I was supposed to go to an armorer's course and a security course for sensitive items, etc.. One of my soldiers went to a course for Retention NCO duties. He became our unit Retention Specialist, since he didn't have his stripes yet. These are usually two weeks, or less, kinds of things. If you are in a POG MOS and you want to go to Jump School, volunteer for it before, or during, BCT. The likelihood of your unit sending you there later on is not good unless you are assigned to an Airborne unit. So get that when you can. Sniper school and such is only going to happen for you if you A: are in a unit with a need and opening for that, and B: you are chosen by your leadership to go there. I was in watercraft so there was an opportunity to go to a Combat Rescue Swimmer course at one point. Again, your unit leadership will decide who, if anyone, they will send there. So you need to jump on those things when they come along or you may not get another chance. Talk to your recruiter about this.

Where you might find this concept handy is in AIT. There will always be classes graduating and others arriving. When people leave they tend to leave behind things they don't want to pack or ship home, etc. so you may find some items left in the barracks. I'm not advising any sort of shamming mind you, but let's just say that I found a pair of boots that were in a locker we cleaned out and they were close to my size. I didn't wear them but I shined them up real nice (this was in 2001 when we still shined boots) and put them under my bunk on display. So I didn't have to keep a shined pair I wore down there and that bought me another day before I had to shine again. Time is precious in AIT, so any extra display items like that can be a time saver in some way. You may even find something you can use. When we graduated, we used to give away stuff to other's especially the newer guys that still needed to buy things. But, yeah Matt's right, you won't be using anything you brought with you from home, in BCT. AIT's another matter.

Hey great video! Also I have a question, so I took a practice ASVAB today and got a 49 which isn't high enough to enlist active duty. But my recruiter said that if it was a real ASVAB I would've gotten in the 50s. Can you answer why I would score higher on a real ASVAB? Is it because the practice is harder or what?
