Sundowning is a symptom of dementia which is a state of confusion, anxiety, aggression and wanting to go home.
I share two tips I have found helpful when needing to re-direct a person in a state of confusion with the most ease possible.
1- Maintain a warm tone communicating that they can feel safe where they are and with who they are with.
Once you have gained their trust and they are receptive to you, extend that safety to their surroundings by helping them feel connected to items in the room.
2- Anchor them with familiarity. Use names, pictures and items to help them find comfort in their environment.
Although they may not recognize you or the home they may accept that they are where they are meant to be at the moment. Re-directing them to “sleep it off” becomes more possible.
Be well,
Ruthann
