What a glorious mess! I just use a Diamond sharpener and it gets the job done in about 2 to 3 minutes. I always clean the blade after I use it and my Kabar still looks new. If you wipe the blade as soon as you finish cleaning it, it will have that same nice finish on the blade, if you always wipe it with some 'mystery' oil, then the finish on the blade absorbs it and then what happens is, the blade becomes shiny. You don't want a shiny blade unless you have a stainless finish on it. it attracts attention and you don't want that in a hunting/survival setting. I have a lot of Kabars and went through a lot of 'experiments' finding out what works. Trust me, keep it simple!!

I bought a Kabar today at my local pawn shop in Copperas Cove, TX. The one I bought says, "US Army" I have been looking for one reasonably priced. The previous owner probably sharpened it with one of those "v" notched sharpeners. Sharp/dull wasn't uniform. Nicks and burns in clip point. I smoothed those with a fine file. I ran the knife over an Arkansas stone. Not sure of grit. I'm guessing medium? I was able to sharpen the blade, but still it needs work. I didn't see too many of being these types being carried in Iraq (2008) and Afghanistan (2011). I had a Buck 119 that I used. Its still my favorite knife, besides a Mora. Still a great purchase, something cool, another tool, and nostalgic.

i’m a long way from an expert, and everybody does it a little different. But I use a 400 grit for when a knife needs re-profiling or has damage, a 1,000 for general sharpening, and 3,000* for polishing the edge, then knock off any bur with a piece of leather. (an old belt works fine) As far as oil goes, i just soak mine in water for a few minutes before i use them, but automatic transmission fluid is also great but makes a mess.

Logan. My Ka-Bar USMC is 7 years old and on December 2019 it will be 8 years old, I got this knife back in 2012. My leather handle and sheath darkened naturally and I do not know any way to get the darkened look faster, other then just use the knife and carry it often, especially on hot summer days. As for the light rain part of your comment, I've had mine out in rain, snow, extreme cold and extreme hot weather. I've had it out in the mud, down in creek bottoms and have left it out in the cold by accident. If you just oil it up after being in water or mud and keep it clean, you don't run the risk of having it rust. As for the leather I just wipe it off and oil it if the knife gets too dirty. I hope I helped you out, thanks for watching and feel free to watch some of my other videos if you wish.

@@ReaperXN7 For Asia and Japan I would definitely say get a Ka-Bar or knife that has a synthetic handle. As during WW2 and Vietnam troops would have the grips on their knives be eaten away by salt water and the humidity could definitely mess with leather handles and sheaths. Thats just from what I've read, but the Ka-Bar is no stranger to that part of the world, if Marines and Army in WW2 and Vietnam were able to use them effectively there, so can you. Just be sure to oil them up good I'm sure there are other KZbinrs that go into more detail about salt water and knives. I'm not sure what the knife laws are in that part of the world, so you should check up on them. The Ka-Bar will do you good. I'd recommend the USMC style one, I have both it and the USN MK1. The Mark 1 is a great knife but it lacks the weight required for chopping thicker limbs and brush. The Mark 1 is a great utility knife though and thats its main purpose for me. You should never allow a knife to get so dull you have to sharpen it with a stone. If you use a honing steel and a good strop, you can keep a knife sharp almost indefinitely. You should always use oil with natural stone, such as an Arkansas oilstone, but the oil really doesn't help with sharpening the knife. In fact, oil slows down the sharpening process. What the oil does is protect the stone. Using a bare stone, or using a stone with water, will soon clog all the pores in the stone, and render it ineffective. Oil, if you use the right weight, will float particles of stone and of steel, and allows them to by wiped or flushed away so the stone doesn't clog. A suction feeling doesn't help with sharpening, and is more likely to make sharpening take a lot longer than it should. You should also avoid using Teflon completely. Not only does it not help with the sharpening [process, it interferes with it. You're trying to abrade or polish away metal, depending on the stage of sharpening you're at, and slickness is the enemy of abrasion and of polishing. Remember that the only reason oil is use is to protect the stone, not to to sharpen the knife. A dry stone cuts much faster than a stone with water, and a stone with water cuts much faster and easier than a stone used with oil. But since dry stones clog in minutes, and a stone with water clogs almost as fast, oil is a necessity, assuming you're using a natural stone, which is far and away the best kind. Japanese water stones are also excellent, but are made to soak up water, and are complete porous, which means you don't have to worry about clogging them. Or nearly so. You'll also have a far easier time sharpening a knife perfectly if you start at the back of the blade and stroke toward the point. When you start at the back and lift as you near the belly of the blade, you get a correct angle for the belly and point automatically. If you start at the point and stroke toward the back of the blade this no longer happens, and either the belly will be at the wrong angle, or the rest of the blade will be at the wrong angle. You'll also have part of the blade making contact with the stone longer than the other part, and this, too, interferes with sharpening and cutting. The belly and point of your knife is on the stone for a tiny part of a stroke but the rest of the blade makes contact for almost the length of the stone. Not good. This won't stop the knife from getting sharp, but it will mean two different angles on the same blade, which can interfere with cutting, and which can shorten the life of the knife. And, of course, you should be using the entire stone with every stroke. You're stopping short on the end, and this will shorten a stone's life tremendously. Your knife doesn't even touch the final inch or so of the stone, so it's getting no wear at all. If you use the stone very often, you'll either concave the whole thing, or create a hump where you stop the knife. Both mean a ruined stone.
@pliskenx51mm837 жыл бұрын
Well thanks for the advice. But I can assure that I don't do this often and I only sharpen my knife when the edge gets moderately dull. Which with my Ka-Bar is after long periods of use. I only sharpen it when I need to. Which isn't often at all. Teflon use in this video had nothing to do with sharpening the knife. I used Teflon to remove some of dirt and debris that were on the blade. I also made this video to be a HD better quality version of my first video. Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching.
