An important breakthrough I had in therapy when I explained my alter ego to my therapist is when she said that it is not a mask or a costume that I wear, it is who I really am without my fears, trauma, or struggles. The "you are not Clark Kent, you are actually Superman" moment.

As an introvert I realized a couple months ago that I create an "extrovert mode" that I activate in big social events like birthday parties, weddings, etc. Since then, I call myself as a "socially functional introvert" haha. Now I relate that "mode" with this alter ego effect concept.

This is what "fake it till you make it" means to me. I accidentally created an alter ego years go. I was super shy and quiet. typical headphones on, staring at the ground as I walked. So closed up, I walked right past 1 friend setting another on fire(by accident) and completely missed it. She's fine, by the way. Just some pills on her clothes burnt up. but then around age 20 I started working renaissance faires, as a pirate/privateer. And that requires a lot of interacting with strangers. My group really leaned into the improv/street acting element of it all. So I had to build a character with a history and personality traits. So through years of playing this bold, gregarious rake.(Imagine Porthos The Pirate from 3 musketeers, but less tall tales) I noticed that I would go out more, talk to strangers, have fun in the chaos that is social life. I grew into the shape I had built for myself. I can definitely attest to alter egos.

To be honest, for myself, I am not sure about adopting an alter ego. I feel like I am tucking away a part of myself. I want to improve my whole self, elevating it to where I want to be. Maybe I execute an alter ego in way. I push myself to do things I don't normally do, but I still consider those actions my own. Anyways, another great video. I personally find your videos infectious. Also, you remind me of my sister. Luckily, I love my sister lol.

Kudos to you, it's definitely better way to do it, but for me Tina's video is kind of groundbreaking. Personally, I don't want to change my whole self. I do like that I'm introvert and introspective, and if I could i would never speak to anyone but my friends and dog, and stayed inside all my life. Unfortunately at work if I want to make projects I'm passionate about I have to interact with other people and be forceful instead of sitting back (exactly like Tina in the clip, Tina, I feel you, girl.) and getting the worst scraps of work. I am actively fighting to stay on top and as much as this behaviour saved me from cuts my company recently made, the emotional toll it takes for me to "be someone else" is too big. I wonder if I adopted this idea into my life, would it be easier to switch and not get the emotional backlash after the day of work is done?
@lovely_bean
@lovely_bean 8 ай бұрын
@mald379 I never thought of it that way! For me, there isn't rely a part of myself I want to keep. I like the whole butterfly transformation situation. Reading what you wrote helped me understand. I think this would be a great thing to implement if you do have a part of, or an ego of, what you want to keep. I think that if you have something to settle back into yourself after the day is done, you wouldn't have a problem switching back. For example, Tina might change from her white clothes back to her black clothes and go for a walk. When she comes back, she settles and does regular Tina things

This is so crazy because when I was around 15-18 I got inspired by the Billy Milligan story and created 3 alter egos. But I had to “kill” them eventually. So, here’s why. One of the alter-egos was strict and determined and I “activated” her when I had to do homework or chores. Because the real me hated doing homework and chores but one of my alter-egos loved that. Another alter-ego was extroverted and carefree, spiritual and even flirty. She was activated around people when I had to be friendly and confident. Cause the real me was shy and melancholic. The third one was bossy and I “activated” her when I had to be assertive and really confident. Each of them had name, surname, date of birth, nationality and specific appearance description. That all made them become “alive”. As you can see, they were pretty useful. So why did I have to “kill” them? Two reasons. First, when I shared the story of my alter-egos with others, they considered me as a crazy person. So I was afraid that would exclude me from the society even more. Second, at times I began to actually believe that there are other peephole in my head that take please and control me. In other words, I started to believe in it a little bit to much. So, after weighing pros and cons, I made a decision. There’s only one me. And I want to me someone else, I can simply “borrow” the traits of that someone that would benefit me. Now, after seeing this video, I’m amazed at how around 10 years ago these alter-egos were created by me as a tool to adapt in the society. I wasn’t going crazy. I was just a teenager who wanted to fit and succeed. So, maybe my dearest alter-egos may come back to life? But wait! There’s no need, I guess. Cause as I observe how I grew and changed over the years, I can see a little bit of every alter-ego in myself. Maybe that’s because they were never other people in my head. It was me all along.
@Ayumi649

Wow. That was actually very beautifully written. I enjoyed reading your experience. I agree that you probably don't need them anymore because all of those traits are a part of you now.. Ultimately it’s you doing everything but your alter ego helps you to blackout unnecessary things your real self would find annoying, hurt or even depressed and break down about. And I’m speaking of a experience, I have created an alter ego years ago and that got me through shit, whenever I felt giving up there was this feeling inside me who just made me get up and get things done for my self. As of now, last night my alter ego’s desperation and hard work got me the first place of my faculty in university and as soon as I saw it I actually didn’t feel anything other then saying “good job girl” to my self. So i have embodied and became what I once thought only my alter ego will do it for me, So to say it again, it’s you who’s doing all of your accomplishments.

Interestingly enough there is a Tibetan Buddhist technique which is very similar to this where you visualise yourself as embodying a particular deity. Ultimately it’s designed to lead to non-duality so this “alter ego effect” would be similar and useful as a vehicle to eventually reach this state of wholeness and your full potential which lays latent within 😊

Is this the tulpa concept? Actually I think that tulpa were self-crafted and not (nearly?) connected to deities, but that the tulpa activation had the potential to reach high power and thus the tulpa practice was outlawed. Idk though, maybe I embellished this info in my memory/dreams 😅 I believe that Phillip Pullman also based daemons on this concept, and even that the classical era concept of demon/daemon was the same fundamental idea as tulpa too.

It’s more like Devatayoga which is the main basis of Vajrayana and Tantric practices. The term visualisation is misleading as the way they understand it is more like “embody”. Obviously what’s discussed in this video is not exactly the same as devatayoga since that is from the Buddhist context (and Hindu) so has a specific lineage. But it is interesting to see the parallels in the methods.

This sounds more like a temporary solution to problems. I wouldn't use this technique for the long term. If you're at point A (example: fear of socialising) and you want to get to point B (no fear of socialising) then instead of trying to split yourself from the part that feels fear, you should confront the reason why you feel fear in the first place. There is a reason. Once you confront the root problem (past experience) and let those negative emotions out and process them (instead of stuffing them down) THEN you will automatically start moving to the point B. When you start perceiving your negative emotions as messages instead of things to be avoided, then life will be much easier.

What should i do if the problem is lack of discipline
@SeyaLaru
@SeyaLaru 7 ай бұрын
@@b-doi1211 You can go many ways about this: 1. Ask yourself what part of yourself does not want to be disciplined. What kind of bad things could happen if you had discipline and were successful? Maybe you don’t want to appear like a fortunate, successful person, bc you’re afraid of being used (being afraid that people would take smth away from you; so you sabotage yourself). 2. Ask yourself: What does being undisciplined make me feel? Possible answer: Not good enough. (What’s so bad about that?)-> feeling worthless. (What does that mean?) I‘m alone. (try to remember when in your past & childhood you felt this way when it comes to achieving anything. How did your parents treat you in terms of school achievement? Focus on that feeling, write & cry about it & let your negative emotions out) 3. Ask yourself what will happen if I’m not disciplined? F.e.: "I’m bad" -> rejected -> alone -> unsafe(Maybe you were punished for lack of discipline as a child) There might be multiple traumas/ negative beliefs that result in your lack of discipline. Once you resolve them, you will automatically become more disciplined (If you‘ll still want to be by then)

I think you can still do both tbh. Maybe it is a temporary solution, but that's the point. To get you to live the life you want WHILE you work on your long term internal health. For example, I have gotten to a point in my journalling where I am comfortable with my uncomfortable feelings (at least much faster and less triggered than before.) Although creating the space in your mind where you CAN do things like the alter ego can help me stop limiting myself. Using your alter ego to help you move into action can show you EVIDENCE that you CAN do it even if you need the use of an alter ego. It's through real life evidence where you build confidence and be much more internally stronger as well. So yeah its temporary, but that's the end goal.

I never thought of it this way, but my "alter ego" so to speak is basically my own name shortened to its one-syllable form. Only my closest friends and family call me by my full name, but everyone else only calls me by the shortened version. On reflection, I definitely feel a sense of vulnerability around ppl who call me by my full name, that doesn't exist quite as much otherwise. I think it has the effect of making me less intimidated by social situations (especially ones involving strangers). There's some holes in that "persona" that I could maybe invest some time into fine-tuning tbh, but it's helped a lot with my social anxiety so far

My backstage ritual before that scene was to gesticulate putting on a mask (as if I were a shaman now that I think of it). That allowed me to become more explosive. I also noticed that I tried to get into character by yawning as it allowed me to relax and become less focused/disconnected from the present -- something like an induced trance if you may. I construe that I access/express less 'performed' facets of myself with a Shaman approach. I am intensely introverted, and have worked my way into a specialization in strategy and risk so that I can manage the number of people contacts I have through any given day. I'm too tall, clumsy, stutter and flush, don't present well, and prefer writing. I am also a guitarist and songwriter and am quite happy getting out on stage to play for 1000 people. I love it. But I don't do it every day.

This was incredibly powerful... didn't realize I've been doing this until my 20's and felt very confident in most situations. Then slowly merged my both sides into one to appear the same in all situations ... lost all confidence and very much became insecure.. damn now I know how to fix it. :D

The idea of craft a alter ego is intriguing to me... I did that in some moments of my life (mainly when managing public speaking in college) but I never thought about it in a structured way and in fact had some fear that could generate somekind of split personality. Maybe I need to give it a try again. Thank You Tina!

Your video essay actually made me realize I have tapped into my alter ego for more than a year now when I created my supposedly dump account dedicated to the things I would never post on my main social media accnt like political memes, music preference, and my poems and short essays. Now I have an online community with the same interests as I have in that account and I actually got to meet them on music gigs. I still keep my main accnt hidden from them and vice versa. Only my sister and my best of besties know abt it. Only two people in my life haha. Surprisingly enough, my name for that is from a literary piece whose character is a corrupt friar priest because the name sound silly for me. Anyway, I like your content!

I was very shy, introverted, quiet and very embarrassed of myself in 1st year of my college. Then I've decided to become extroverted, loud, and cus I had a lot of energy to give off to deserving people. Of course! Made a lot of enemies in first year, still have them in 2nd year. Was a crybaby on small stuff in 1st year, cries to let the negativity out in 2nd year. An upgrade over the year. A lot of process. Indeed!

I have to say this video has really made me feel better and more hopeful. I feel like I've been drowning in the generic, status-quo philosophies such as the likes of "Just be yourself" which I honestly really don't find helpful at all. And I'm sure people have meant well for me, but their words weren't the ones i really wanted to hear, seen as the way I am often doesnt correlate to how i perceive the ideal version of myself to be. To answer your question though, my baseline is definitely more the quiet reserved type although technically I'm extroverted because I get 'my kicks' being around multiple other people (and right now as I'm pretty socially isolated, my situation has become quite the predicament I feel I have to endure.) I've always liked to think of myself as the free-spirited type, even the type of individual who might embark on something completely impromptu on a whim. I also long to play music with other people (I play an instrument). It's quite frustrating really because very little of what I perceive about myself correlates my 'current self' but I guess it boils down to a person's willingness (or lack of) to change.

But because of that name, i created a persona of being bubbly, approachable, bright, friendly and loves to give and receive hugs 😂 i even dyed my hair in peach and wore bright clothing to match. I used an alterego for some time as I was moving into adulthood and really helped me a lot to free myself to be fully who I want to be. To me always sounds funny thinking about the name I used, because it was much more normal name then my own, since I wanted to bland in normally with the others.

I didn't realise it until now that i unknowingly did it when i was a teenager preparing for an entrance exam. i had a tiara from some school event which i was just wear whenever i sat to study and would behave like a queen who is the best at everything and is teaching the concepts to others. that really empowered me somehow and maybe my alter ego was infact a queen at that time. it's not anymore as i do not feel the need to influence masses but just be the best at what I'm doing and learn as much as possible and be dependable. ig I'll take some time to figure out my current alter ego xx

I thought i was delusional, or too dramaic to have a alter ego, *well before watching this video i didn even know how to name this "action" of mine*. But now ik many sucessful people have one and they are at the top because of it! Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart Tina. Thank you. So what insipired me to create my own alter ego was, well is: My fake scenarios! My actual delusions, yes! My own fantasies of the movies and dramas ive watched and wanted to become a specific character, a brave and challanging person yet kind. A cold but warm from inside persona. An actual intelectual person, as i am deep inside a FUCKING people pleaser, someone FUCKING dependent of others, Someone FUCKING shy. But thanks to this persona of mine, i am able to do my oral presenations, my speeches as i'm a law student. I'm able to debate, and be confident as i know i can make it to the end, because I KNOW I PLANNED MY STORY, i know i planned where Navy *my alter lmao* wants to be and end my story, wich is my graduation. Ps: at one point i thought i kinda developed DID *God forbid* LMAO🤣

I am someone who loves cozy clothes, just feeling comfortable in my everyday life. But I had this problem, that my baggy clothes made me feel everything but confident, happy or energetic. I was always sleepy. At some point in my life I kinda started uploading more content on instagram and TikTok. I learned how to pose, be confident and be someone completely different to who I was years ago. I think social media is my alter ego. I do not have a name for it or a person that inspires me. but what triggers this ego is when I just simply do my makeup. I think because I am struggling with my skin, it just gives me the feeling of wearing a mask. Like, I can be whoever I want. No one knows this version of myself. I have so many pieces of clothing in my wardrobe but I rarely wear them. I always wear the same stuff at school. But when I wear makeup I start looking for outfit inspirations, I learn how to style my clothes, I learn about new ways to elevate my posts and I feel more confident meeting people. Because I don’t think about what they see in me because I am feeling my best when I am my alter ego. I just started not caring which, honestly, is the best thing you can do in this toxic world we’re living in.

A powerful tool, for sure, but maybe not for everyone. I have done this instinctively my whole life, but it led me to a situation where I didn't really remember who the "original me" behind it all really was, or how to access it. I unknowingly created an alter ego through the course of a self-improvement arc I underwent. It was unbelievable how focused and determined I was. The downside was that I was more emotionally stale with that alter ego and when I went home to my province to catch up with my high school buddies in a ramen shop, I realized that I was like a stranger in my own skin. Then as we went home to my friend's house to play video games, I was slowly able to pull out my normal self and just be me. After that day, I thought about that moment for a month. I suffered a sort of meltdown trying to decide whether I had to be either one personality and eventually decided to stop having my alter ego. I'm relieved I found this video though.. Maybe it isn't a bad thing to have an alter ego or have to decide whether to be either just yourself or your alter identity.

@@gavingranado2146 we have many sides, more than two. We're very different in different situations. You're not the same with your mother and with your girlfriiend. There are two quite different versions of you that would do quite different things in similar situations but around different people. So yeah. It is completely normal and natural. I think you can be whatever you want whenever you want if it helps you, if it's comfortable for you. You don't need to choose you can't choose. You're always gonna be different, we have social roles. Alter ego thing isn't about social roles but I think it's similar to that. I'm a socially awkward person, introverted and quite shy, uncomfortable with new people. But when I meet a person with those traits I become very confident, extraverted, talkative, initiative which is funny. I don't make it a problem and just accept that I'm different in different situations. Reading your comment I remembered how I met my old friend from school after couple of years living in another city completely different life. I met her and we talked and I to my surprise found myself acting as old me that felt very odd to me cause I didn't feel this was me. It's actually quite difficult to stop acting according to your "role". I found it challenging. I also remember loving going summer camps when I was younger. I felt so free and it was the best part of my childhood. I wasn't around new people that didn't know me at all and I could be perceived in a new way. Sorry for the off top I have no friends to talk to
