Thanks for the tips on dealing with odd numbers of colors to make loops! I wanted to make a loop instead of two braided ties but I wasn't sure how to do it

You have a beautiful voice, and I love the Mulan reference :) Thank you for this video! I've been doing regular and alpha bracelets for a while but the last pack of floss I bought had a couple front and back printed kumihimo disks, but absolutely zero instructions. Or even the name "kumihimo" lol. Good thing Pinterest is all knowing and showed me one so I could look it up! Thank you for the step by step process and the odd number of strings trick! I'll have to keep it in mind for the next one I do! Funny note, I got cocky once I got it going, and quite literally right as you were talking about if you find a 3 and 1 string, I discovered I'd done something wrong and had to backtrack 😅

Ahhh I suppose you would be correct! I don’t normally rotate my wheel I just work clockwise section to section around. I didn’t really think about the actual turning of the wheel just the order of sections! Haha! Thank you!

I personally use washi tape to mark the last string I moved if I'm putting the kumi down for the time being!

You can also leave it with your next working pair of pairs half complete - 1 vs 3 (instead of 2 vs 2 as all the other pairs will be) or you can look for the most parallel pairs whose threads will sit over everything else, and then know that your next working pair will be formed in a V immediately next to your lines. Happy braiding!

So if I understood well, kumihimo patterns are not like friendship bracelets patterns, there is one way to fold the strings (according to the number of strings) and the pattern just show the initial position of the strings and their colour ?
@MegMakesCrafts
@MegMakesCrafts 3 жыл бұрын
If you’re making the patterns that are presented in a wheel like the ones on friendship-bracelets.net - yes! I do know there are a few other styles of kumihimo but for the basic patterns the initial set up is the pattern and there is one way to fold.

This method works for 12 strands or higher and less strands too?
@MegMakesCrafts
@MegMakesCrafts Жыл бұрын
Yes! So long as your wheel has the space to accommodate all the strings this works 😊

In another tutorial, it said to start with the right hand string at the top to the bottom and then rhe left up. So opposite to what you have said. Does it matter which way you do it? Does the pattern turn out differently?
@MegMakesCrafts
@MegMakesCrafts 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it will make a difference but I can’t say I’ve ever tried. You’re still folding the same level each time, I just wouldn’t change techniques part way through.

Hello 👋 , do you have to have the same amount of spaces between each group of threads on your wheel?
@MegMakesCrafts
@MegMakesCrafts 3 жыл бұрын
No! There is one group that has three notches between it and the next. As I explained in the video, I was hoping to get two notches between each but didn't have enough, so the result is that there was a couple extra left!

Huh. So that’s why my patterns were going wonky. I work … uh. Counterclockwise. It just, makes more sense for my brain that way. They way your doing is making my brain scream LOL.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused about what exactly you're doing about the odd number of strings... Let me start by asking if you begin with 20 strings that are all the same length? Are you actually splitting the strands of a dk. green, lt. green, brown and blue string? And is the reasoning behind doing this because they're halved? Or... ??? So, once they come back together I'll actually have 40 strings to work with?
@MissKrittiKat
@MissKrittiKat 2 жыл бұрын
OK... So, I just watched your video on splitting strings. I think I understand what to do now. I guess I should say that this is my first time ever making a Kumihimo bracelet. That being said, I think this is what I'm to have to start with: YELLOW 3 - halved BROWN 1 - split BLUE 3 - halved 1 - split LT. GREEN 1 - halved 1 - split DK. GREEN 1 - halved 1 - split Is that correct?
@MegMakesCrafts
@MegMakesCrafts Жыл бұрын
Hi Kristi I’m sorry I didn’t see your comment until now. I didn’t split strings for the entire pattern. The pattern will show as segments in a ring, each segment split in 2 pieces. Each half of the pattern segment represents 1 string so if a segment shows half blue and half brown that means that there is one blue string and one brown string. Kumihimo is worked in pairs of strings. If you want to split strings due to odd numbers of colours to make a loop start, then you cut your string double the length you need and split in half. This way you can fold both odd colours back on themselves to make a full sized string. This is not a requirement though, you could literally tie a knot at the bottom and shove it through the hole and you can still fold a kumihimo.

@@MegMakesCrafts Thanks for your reply! After breaking a string a couple of times, I finally took it all the way back to the loop, tied on to the broken string and hid the knot in the loop. Now, I've completed all the folding and have the desired length of my bracelet. Yay! ;) I'm curious to know how to finish it with a button to push thru the loop. Have you ever done this? Could you direct me, please? I would love to see a video that shows a bunch of different ways to secure these! Thank you so much for your time!!!
