You are the most enthusiastic, most irresistibly charming, and most cheerful music teacher on KZbin. And the way you break things down to make them so much simpler is astounding. Most teachers I've come into contact with give you tiny bits of information at a time and they seem to be trying to make it more confusing... and they never come back and put the little bits of information they've given you together so it's up to you to connect the dots. Thank you nice lady

the most valuable advice I can give as someone who struggled to sight read for ages is to play! the more you read the easier it gets and the quicker you spot the patterns and ideas discussed in this video. you'll build up a bank of mental patterns that appear in each style and you'll learn to not only recognise them but to play them without thought. these tips are really useful but the best way to get the most out of them is to keep reading. good luck!

Marvelous. I'm 77 and bought a Korg Pa600 2 years ago. Know chords etc., but am just getting into reading sheet music. I took John Thompson's through 1A lesson book in the 1950s, and love music, but no playing until I also took up bass electric guitar 3 years ago. What a find for retirees with a love for music and the time and desire to want to re-acquaint.

Another little trick that might be helpful to some is recognizing the fact that even numbered intervals are always line-space or space-line. Odd numbered intervals are always line-line or space-space. Remembering this might help some people quickly differentiate, for example, a sixth versus a seventh. Keep up the great videos.

I have games on my phone, I use the acronyms, I practice, but it's been really challenging to get all those note names to stick to my brain and coordinate with my fingers, lol. Apart from eye opening impact from studying music theory, your approach to learning how to read sheet music was almost equally impactful. Great video! It’s definitely “a skill” that you need to develop and reach automaticity. It’s not enough to simply “know” these things. I knew how to read music for two years, I knew about intervals, but I never tried to sightread. I always studied and analyzed the piece before attempting to play it. This year I entered a music school and I had to learn to sightread for our sightreading exams. It took me 5 months of frequent sightreading sessions to put these concepts into practice. But I’m so happy with the outcome. I can sight read simple pieces now! Like Grade 1 or something! But it’s a breakthrough for me, because I couldn’t do that before! I could see the notes, understand the intervals, but playing even a simple piece straight away was next to impossible!

I just started reading notes today. I am truly a newbie, but I like my method better than the mnemonics that everyone else uses. I have two sets like every one else for space and then lines. LINES: [F]inal line [D]awning line (It is rising to sunrise) Middle [B] [G]oing up one line above the first line [E]ntering the treble clef SPACES: [E]nding space [[C]losest to top space [A]dvancing to top (It is going up one from the bottom space) [F]irst space on treble clef I guess my whole point is that it is better to know that the notes by looking at that immediately rather than going through a whole list. However, I totally agree that knowing relative positions is very valuable. So, I totally agree with Lisa.

Thank you, although I‘ve been playing the piano for some years I‘m not as good in sight reading. This gave me some new impulses. What I always do for the bass clef notes is see them like in treble clef and move them down a third. This is obiously only for the note names and not the height, and I don‘t know if it‘s the best way.
