I finally managed to translate the first sentence of the book. It was nostalgic, because I ended up remembering the time when I started to be interested and learn about English through games from my childhood. Thank you 😁

It's nice that you made a whole video teaching people how to read and write the language.

The plan is that if enough people care about it, I'll take the time to make another video writing some words and phrases to teach the practical application of writing in Trunic. =3c

thanks. This helped me make sense of my old tunic notes that were poorly organized. Ctrl + F helped me find the word I was looking for that contained one of the more rare runes. Unrelated note: I have a theory that the language is called Tunic, but the game is called Secret Legend.
@HappyWulf2 жыл бұрын
The game has always been called Secret Legend. It was changed to Tunic a year or two before release. There's *other* reasons why it's called Tunic.

Everyone I talk to about it goes with the intellectual phonetics stuff with the weird letters like ae for aether. I wanted to do this for the average person, as an average person, using mental tricks an average person could follow and use to memorize it.

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! For the phoneme in the word “vision,” I would spell it as “zh,” as it is voiced instead of the voiceless sh.

Yay! You're welcome! I also made a mistake, that I edited into the Description of the video. The 'ol is actually an ugh, like Look, Book.
@Sonicgott Жыл бұрын
One more thing: J and CH are voiced and voiceless consonants of the same type, which is why their runes are inverted. The “weird” one, as you call it, CH (or TCH), is the voiceless consonant. :)

Very edutaining video, thank you so much :D At first, I wanted a translation of the instruction booklet, but the moment I figured out the sound "Uh", I was determined to learn the language. I'm at a part of the game where I can interact with many NPCs, so I felt like being able to understand them would make a big difference. Thank you again for this video

Thanks for doing this! My grade school English class lessons on the phonemic alphabet is really coming in handy here, hehe~ I pulled up a phonemic chart and was crossing off the letters one by one as I was following along with your video. That's when I noticed that there's one that was skipped. There's a phonemic letter for the "aw" sound in words like "not" or "because", as well as a dedicated phonemic letter for the "aw" in "saw" or "law". Those seem so close in pronunciation that I figured they must be used interchangeably in Trunic.
@HappyWulf Жыл бұрын
Nice! Though you might have missed it, that sounds is in there. I believe it was the second letter I did, and used the word "awesome" to example it? Awesome and Saw use the same rune.

@@HappyWulf Ahhhh, gotcha. I did go back and forth in this video several times while taking notes, so it's likely I missed something or got confused. Great video! If I might, when you speak of the hard T and the hard D, that’s actually the participation or not of your vocal chords Soft - no vocal chords, so voiceless - as in Slow Hard - vocal cords, so voiced - as in viSion. The vocal cord makes the sound sort of like a buzzing bee and we have that difference in language (many languages actually) and there are several pairs. The following list clarifies this a lot! The consonants in between // are phonetic symbols. Hope it helps anyone! • /p/ (voiceless) and /b/ (voiced): pat vs bat • /t/ (voiceless) and /d/ (voiced): tap vs dap • /k/ (voiceless) and /g/ (voiced): cap vs gap • /f/ (voiceless) and /v/ (voiced): fan vs van • /s/ (voiceless) and /z/ (voiced): sip vs zip • /ʃ/ (voiceless, as in “show”) and /ʒ/ (voiced, as in “vision”) • /tʃ/ (voiceless, as in “chop”) and /dʒ/ (voiced, as in “jump”)

14:52 is “ir” also used for er? And is “air” also used for b”ear”?

it's all based on sounds, so 'air' is used for Bear, Heir, Air, There, Pear, etc... 'ir' as in Bird can also be used in Rang'er', yes.

This was monumentslly helpful! Thank you! I looked up another guide and they didnt seperete the sounds into femilies, which is critical when talking about phonemes, because you have hard and soft phonemes. Apparently teo vowels sounds are missing from Tunic's language though? At least, according to this other guide. AW (as in Paw) and UH (as in Bug), but im going to doible check. Now, what about words like Gun? Is it G.UH.-N, G-UH.N, or both? Im guessing its like a normal word that seperstes phonemes into syllables and goes left to right when possible. But what about the UH, if thats not in the lanaguage?
@HappyWulf Жыл бұрын
Aw as in PAW is the 2nd rune I talked about, and UH as in GUN or Th-UH (the) is the 4th; G-uh N. Remember Vowels take up the outside of the rune and the consonants take up the inner. So, G-Uh is a single combined rune, and N is it's own - but they are all touching each other going left to right to form a full word. The horizontal line is a formal aid to help keep the flow of words, but is not necessary and is often excluded in informal writing.
@FurryEskimo Жыл бұрын
@@HappyWulf Great to know, thanks! I'm going to look into this myself soon, but just checking, are you using TH-UH because that's what You personally say in real life, or because the game's dialogue comes with an accent? I say TH-E. I think there was a similar example where you said "UN apple" vs "AN apple", but I say "AN apple."
@HappyWulf Жыл бұрын
@@FurryEskimo It's based entirely on how you say it. It accounts for accents this way. This allows for some words to be written in multiple ways, it's fine as long as it's readable. Th-UH and Th-EE are both used in the manual. For example, they are right next to each other in Page 40 on #1. "Th-UH sound of chanting in Th-EE (air/heir)?"

@@HappyWulf Quick question, but what symbols/phoneme would you use to represent the R sound in the word Cross? I was looking for it under the R vowels, but I'm thinking, maybe it's a consonant, so it's K-(R-O)-S?
