There is nothing wrong with wanting to play something note-for-note, it can be a fun challenge. But I would encourage players to play within themselves, as well. Even Slash doesn't play these songs the same every night. Even back IN the eighties and early nineties, he and Izzy were playing them completely differently to the way they played them on the record. So, imo, there is nothing wrong with learning the song and playing it the way YOU feel it should be played. It will likely sound better, since you're playing it in a way that is natural to you, and not some other player.

Of course, this is just a way of helping people learn by realising how something is played by the musician - e.g. you would never play the bridge section of this track starting on a second finger, but once you see that Slash plays it like that - you learn something about why the chords are joined up in that way
