Big Yea! Thumbs up! Thank you so much for this great video. I wish I'd had this clarification a long time ago. Believe it or not, when I was a young clarinet player, I took things literally and tongued with a "tah" sound--on the roof of my mouth! Yep, didn't touch the reed at all. Decades later, someone asked me what part of the reed I tongued on, whereupon I replied, "the reed?" Unbelievable that the subject never come up before, even by my private lesson teacher...and I was a good player (1st chair out of our two high school bands, all-district player). I did make changes later on to my embouchure (especially after playing more tenor sax and switching to bass clarinet), but the point is that you are exactly right. Not one size fits all!

Hey Dan, this is really good and I’m going to incorporate it into my warmups. I just have a musical phrasing question. How do you decide which notes to tongue and which notes to slur?
@SaxCasts5 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, Oftentimes written music has suggestions so a "cheat" when playing something by ear is to have a sneaky peak at the sheet music for ideas. The "artist" answer is to match the idiom of the music you are playing. For example, bebop has a particular expected articulation (slur through every other note.) If you are playing a smooth jazz piece it would make sense to play more legato lines and use the tongue to allow the odd note to pop out. There is no hard and fast rule with articulation and tonguing. The best way to improve your articulation on sax is to listen to the masters and see how they do it, then mercilessly steal their ideas :') Check out Eric's solo in the Big Phat Band version of "Play that funky Music". He has butt kicking phrasing an amazing lines. All the best, Dan

I had just watched a video on tonging with the tip below the bottom ridge and wondering how I will be able to do that not having an instrument yet, then I came to this site first fit hit me quite humorously then I relaxed my tongue! Like the chain store “Relax the Back”.

I have a problem.It’s with Tonguing. Whenever I play a note it has a “ta” sound. (It’s very loud) Witch is what I have been playing like for years. But I was wondering if that’s the right way to do it. Because whenever you play I never hear that sound. It sounds like there is no articulation and you are always slurring. Can someone help me out? The sound of Tonguing is much more prominent when I play and I can never get it as quiet as you.
@SaxCasts2 жыл бұрын
Experimenting with various phonetics, tongue angles and being sure you are supporting the sound will help. It's also a case of giving it time. I prefer the softer "dah" sound to the firmer "Tah"
@babajamiaco5 жыл бұрын
Makes a lot of sense about the tongue position depending on the anatomy of the player. Thanks, it helped to sort this out! But I don't quite understand that concept of constant air flow while the reed vibration is muted by the tongue. I can't hear any evidence of air flowing during breaks at 6:28-6:30. No hiss, nothing. Does it LITERALLY have to flow through the horn when tongue stops the reed from vibrating?
@SaxCasts5 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Babajamiaco, I really appreciate the comment! The air flowing constantly is what gives you a more consistent and professional sound. Image playing 4 seperate loud notes on your Sax at the same volume : play one, breathe in, play the next etc. If you did this you would likely get 4 different volume notes rather than 4 even volume notes. This is just one benefit if constant air. It also allows you to have finer control of all of the muscles used while playing. More control, better airflow, better sound, greater stamina and more consistency! All the best, Dan.

This is the most I have ever learned about playing. Now to make time for practicing!
@SaxCasts5 жыл бұрын
Brilliant Genevieve! What is it you struggle with in terms of time for sax? Is it literally just making the time or more to do with what to practice/building a routine? I'm planning on making a video touching on building a routine and how I manage my time so interested to hear your thoughts...
@genevievegreene15955 жыл бұрын
@@SaxCasts I was trying to teach myself through videos so there is no feedback. Add to that being a mother of four with a household to run and there is very little time for anything else. But if I did have a routine to follow then it would be a more efficient use of my time when I do manage to squeeze in a practice. Usually I pick a song, listen to the original and covers on violin and piano, then I practice parts of it. I play by ear.

I've been having problems with low notes on my alto. Low C, B and A# are tough to produce and needs lots of ”warm up” to get it without squeaks or ”dual notes” sounds. Thank you for the exercises. On another note your wall background looks like the tiles on my floor. 😁
@SaxCasts5 жыл бұрын
Hey Gordon, definitely check out my video on how to fix your low notes as I'm certain the answer you are searching for it there: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6DEh3aYmbp5pqs&lc=z22rfxfznyr0yjyl1acdp4354rvmvqfon2hk5mwjncpw03c010c.1561297197967574 Haha, you're the first person to comment on the new wall. A friend of mine suggested we make a "feature" wall in the new sax studio. This is actually laminate flooring glued and nailed to the wall. I really like it! Let me know how you get on with the low notes vid. All the best, Dan

How does tonguing go together with pushing the keys / notes. I’m new to sax and can’t figure out how it all comes together.
@MisterAnding4 жыл бұрын
It's not a constant FLOW of air, it's a constant pressure of air. When the tongue is placed, there is very little flow, but there is pressure. Right?
@SaxCasts4 жыл бұрын
Yep true, I do get tongue tied on camera unfortunately and come out with some rubbish amongst what hopefully mostly makes sense :P

I definitely like your idea much better than that tongue tucked down in the nook below the teeth. Which definitely doesn’t work for me.

I tried to relearn how to tongue today but it doesn’t sound good/sounds spitty. And I can’t even really do altissimo anymore with anchor tonguing. Low notes are harder too. It’s gonna be hard to redevelop both
