I love rebatching soap. Each batch is totally unique. I use up all my soap trimmings doing this. Great use of a disappointing batch as well. Thanks for sharing with soapers everywhere.

I've learned to embrace it! Haha! The process I use to rebatch scraps and old soaps is a bit different from the process of rebatching fresh soap (it requires additional liquid) but the same concept! Nice to hear from you, Terry!

I just made a fresh 4lb batch (with 6 colors!) that turned out GORGEOUS...when I realized I left out one of the oils! Rats! So... I unmolded it 10 hours early, cut it, and it's cooking now. This was a great call because it was stinging my hands when I cut it, and the ph strip was almost black. :-O My original recipe had low water, so I added some water and the missing oil. I'm willing to wait on curing to have a smoother bar. I also added a little more sodium lactate and will see if I need more fragrance. I'm sad to lose the pretty swirls...but thankful for your vid. I wasn't sure if this was the right rescue for lye-heavy due to less oil. Thank you! :-)

+Regi Smart Best wishes to you! Let me know how it turns out! You can do the same thing with soap that isn't so fresh. You just need to add about 1/4 c. of water for every 2 lbs. of soap chunks and you may need to turn it on high - especially to start out.

Hey there! I made a 72 oz batch of cold process soap yesterday.. (2 different loafs/containers of soap that hold 10 bars each) I realized after I forgot 5.6 oz of olive oil.. I am worried it’s going to be too lye heavy now 😭 I am going to try the zap test in a few days. I’m going to try to wait 5 days to ensure it’s saponified enough to test. If it zaps me after 5 days, I can assume it’s too lye heavy. Such pretty soap and hours wasted 😞 however, I’d like to rebatch for the first time to save it as much as possible, even if it’s ugly after lol! If I wait 5 days to rebatch, do I just cut it up and add my missing olive oil to the crock pot? Do I need to wait til it’s melted before adding my olive oil? And will it need water since it’ll have been curing for 5 days already? Also, hopefully 10 bars will fit cut down in my crock pot. But all 20 will not. So do I just divide the missing olive oil amount in half and add half to the first batch I melt down, and then the other half to the second? Lastly, do you think my fragrance oil will die down after cooking it, or should I still hold even after heating it? Sorry for all the questions and thanks so much in advance!!
@AmyWarden3 ай бұрын
You should be able to enter the amounts you actually put in the soap in SoapCalc to determine if it is lye heavy. Please don't rely on the zap test. If it won't all fit in your crockpot, I would divide it in half as you described and add half of the olive oil. Then do it again. You can add the oil up front. It will blend in as the soap melts down. If you did a steep water discount, then I would add more water, otherwise you probably won't need it. Depends on the fragrance as to whether it will hold or not. You can add a small amount at the end of the cook if you wish.

Hello, Amy!! I just did my first small batch of CP soap... Now I'm watching videos of how to rebatch CP soap, so you can guess how it went. LOL It solidified so fast after adding the fragrance that I ended up pouring cold mash potatoes into the molds. You say that you can you just remelt and pour again when the soap is "fresh". How fresh are we talking about? Finished mine 30 minutes ago, so is still hot in the mold. Should I melt in a few hours?

Unless you know for sure how much lye to add, I wouldn't recommend it. It could be you used a lot of water or soft oils or something else has caused this...

I noticed when you put rebatch into mould you didn't scrape down the crock pot's sides, is there a reason for this? Is the residue on the sides no good to use?

It's very dried up soap so it doesn't incorporate well, nor does it look very nice. If you are rebatching for your own personal use, it might be ok, unless it's actually burnt - which sometimes happens as well!

@AmyWarden4 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky one! You might need to add both. If your soap is lye heavy, you'll defintely need to add more olive oil. It's kind of a guess as to how much though. If it's started to cure, it may need a small amount of water as well.

@AmyWarden9 жыл бұрын
+Gina M Even a soap with 20% superfat will usually set up. I wouldn't add any more lye, but melting down the batch will likely solve the entire problem. Not sure what factors cause this, but just mixing it all back up with the heat usually does the trick!

Rae Flores Oily soap will sometimes reabsorb, but if you know it's heavily superfatted, it may not. I've never rebatched a soap with too much oil though because it seems difficult to figure out how much extra lye solution to add.

I just made soap but I think I miscalculated and put too much lard. It’s soft and I can see the lard on top of the soap. Can I melt it and add more lye with water?
@AmyWarden6 жыл бұрын
You can if you know how much extra lard you have. If you just have a little bit of oil pooled on top though, it's probably just an overheating/separation issue and you can just melt it down as is to pull it all together.
@Argen306 жыл бұрын
Amy Warden I put 40 oz of both lard and coconut oil. I’m very very new to this. Just learning from teachers on KZbin 😊 And put 5.4 oz of lye and 13.5 oz of water? Can you help me ?
@AmyWarden6 жыл бұрын
If you have 20 ounces EACH of lard and coconut oil for a total of 40 ounces of oils, you would have needed 6.15 oz of lye with 12.3 oz of water - in which case I would dissolve 0.75 oz of lye in 2 ounces of water to add to the soap. If you had 40 ounces EACH of lard and coconut oil for a total of 80 ounces of oils, you would have needed 12.3 oz of lye with 24.6 oz of water - in which case I would dissolve 6.9 oz of lye in 10 oz of water to add to the soap.

So this soap has not fully cured for weeks...you realized just after it hardened that it was bad and immediately re-batched it? My question is - must we wait for the CP soap to cure (4 weeks) before re-batching or can we re-batch it as soon as it's free of the mold if we can already see it's bad?...and then, after re-batching, give it the appropriate 4-6 week cure time.
@AmyWarden5 жыл бұрын
That is correct - as soon as it came out of the mold I realized it was bad and immediately cut it up to rebatch. Once it goes through the heat process, it is actually fully saponified just like a regular hot process soap, so you just need to wait for the rest of the water to evaporate, which may or may not take the full 4-6 weeks cure time.
