The RX8 videos are already my favourite on the channel. Watching the crazy AWD RX7 is fine, but this is actual stuff that 99% of the rotary owning audience can actually relate to and achieve themselves! Personally I'd love to see a hacked together supercharger or turbo setup on this, or for Rob to get a rival RX8 to build the ultimate RX8 setup on.

When my Renesis S2 was cracked opened at 48k the rotor housing chrome was pristine. three oil injectors reall do the work vs older two or one. Only thing was there was so much carbon from previous owners putting in synthetic oils during oil change.

@@aserta wankel by nature does not have enough time to burn all the fuel and air mixture. It also has to throw in oil for lubrication on the seals spinning along with rotors. Synthetic oils are made to resist heat and not combust like fuel. So they leave a lot of unburnt deposits inside the rotor housing, exhaust port, and on the rotor itself. They will seize the seals in place and prevent getting good compression, attract fuel to the carbon build up and have hot spot detonation, and they can build up on the side exhaust ports of Renesis, catch and break the side seals, killing the engine.

I owned an RX8 beck in 2004 and I was just learning how to work on cars. I reluctantly got rid of it to get a “family car”. For the last 3 years I’ve been contemplating getting one again. I just got a 76 Spitfire and debating on throwing one of these in it.

It took Mazda over 3 months to replace the motor in my 04 RX8. It only had 29,000 when the coolant seals went bad. BTW I think people would love more of this type of video from you Rob. Great job guys! I had fun watching

If you have the space, and can rent or borrow a car for the meanwhile. It's genuinely worth doing this yourself. I wouldn't trust non JP technicians anyways. They never get it right, because almost none of them are trained to do it. You know, when you've landed with someone who was invested into, sent by the company to JP and got educated by their techs, because the whole job takes less than eating cake.

Rob, saran wrap. Pack a side and then stretch saran wrap over it for the flip. It'll hold everything in place while you work on it. Make sure the saran wrap will be on the top when you flip it back over on install.

@@F3Ibane With Rob getting into machining, and eventually doing his own billets, I think there's hope for the Renesis. Two major issues need to be solved, how the ports breathe and the cooling issue that melts seals. Rob is already messing with how ports breath on one of the other rotaries. The cooling issue would be solved with better designed parts, hence why manufacturing custom parts from billets is important here. The Renesis design has potential, but that potential isn't met due to manufacturing corner cutting from Mazda, such as not grinding out better ports for better airflow characteristics, or the cooling issue that could be fixed with a more efficient cooling design. If Rob, the team, and probably some helping hands that actually studied thermodynamics and engineering, can produce a modified Renesis design that fixes the issues, think about what other fringe experiments Rob could get into that're mostly untouched in the rotary world. Stuff like what Paul Lamar was into and some of the stuff like what the person who runs the Pattakon website is into. If Rob is willing to dip his feet into the waters of fringe experiments with design, things could get super interesting.

I just rebuilt my S1 RX-8, and while yes, you can build them on a bucket, the engine stand heads aren't too expensive or hard to get. I spent a little more, but that said, You got off luckier than me. My original engine had spat side seals out the exhaust, and cracked 6 corner seals, coolant seals, and all but 3 oil control ring soft seals. That engine is partly in my closet, and the e-shaft and flywheel (which are still in great nick) are now bedroom ornaments, while the rotors from the that block live on in my rebuilt engine, because I cleaned them up when I tore that engine down, and the bearings were in superb shape, unlike the rotors that came out of my replacement engine. Rotary engines are a crapshoot when it comes to used engines, but they are a fucking blast to rebuild. The original engine I have will be ported, and I'll buy new housings for it, but the plates will remain, as I can use the valve grinding paste on another plate trick to clean those up, with a streetport job. Can't wait to see more, guys.

I just got started watching your videos, because I have been fascinated by the rotary engine for some time. Back in the eighties, I had two of them, and was blown away by the acceleration and the way that they would wind out. These cars were Arizona cars, and were faded and a bit shabby from the sun and heat. I was sitting at a stop light one afternoon waiting for it to change and a young guy with a brand new Camaro pulled up next to me. I saw him sneering at me, and decided to teach him a lesson. I guess he figured that I would just poke along. When the light changed, I left him sitting there and was gone in a cloud of smoke. The motor quit soon after. I was used to piston motors, and could work on them without too much trouble, but when my dad tore into that rotary I was amazed by the seeming complexity of the things. It took me years to understand how they even worked. They seemed to be somewhat fragile to me. One thing I would like to say, is that Isaiah doesn't inspire a lot of confidence with what seems like a half assed couldn't give a shit attitude, and I wouldn't be surprised if the bong was getting a bit of a workout. I don't know you guys, so I haven't decided yet, not perhaps that you should care. If you're just doing this for a hobby, I guess impressions won't matter, but if you're in this to make money you might want to tighten it up a bit; just a thought...

That large ring is called a Blowby scraper ring. It helps to close off the ports to the oil control rings under it, because of the exhaust port, and the intake port shapes.

I have seen one sitting in someone's side yard for about 3 years since i started my job at the local dodge dealer. Never worked on a rotary a day in my life. But Isaiah has tempted me to make an offer on it and see whats wrong.
