When it comes to GM starters, they are very similar to each other for many different years and makes. A lot of their interior parts are the same. In this video, Josh will show you how to rebuild a starter after inspecting it and making sure all the parts are functional.
This is part one of a two part series. Stay tuned for much more!

I've run into videos where they didn't give any tips , tricks or hints on how to do this or that on any vehicle. Some of the British videos had more of that than American what gives with the helpful tips. This guy's has as much as the British do.

@@Caddydaddy Did it! Reversed both bolt contacts in solenoid - then inverted the solenoid brass wheel; it had tracks from spark transfer. Spray bombed the armature and stator (it feels smooth) - brushes are Standard Motor RX60 and delivered to E Canada from Amazon for $19. Starter is a Delco 8PG/(same brushes as 8MT and 10MT I think - millions of starters by the time fo the eraly 70s? Seems mine has have just one leather washer (!) at far end, notice that your demo had 2 shims or spacers - anyway I am in accord with the Chev Corvair service manual diagram! Great job Josh - easy to see & well organized!

Yikes - among the typos, the price - the brushes set of 4, no springs, was $10 CDN, delivered. Anyway now for a bench test. Thank you, Josh for the video - you instill confidence..

I have never done it but I believe it would involve swapping around the wiring to the brushes. Starters are designed to always turn the "proper" direction no matter the polarity of the incoming power. Josh

Thanks for the very nice video. Somewhere there should be the copper contacts for the solenoid that you can turn 180* individually. Do you have for it a spring?
@Caddydaddy
@Caddydaddy 2 ай бұрын
You are correct. Many designs allow for the contact to be flipped over to be good as new. Josh

Tell me something, that pen that holds a solenoids housing onto the starter,... My question is if that pin is missing ,would that be the reason why my appendix isn't shifting forward when I turn the key
@Caddydaddy

The pin in necessary for the yoke to pivot and engage the drive gear when the solenoid energizes. Josh

@Caddydaddy
@Caddydaddy Ай бұрын
The bushings are impregnated with oil when manufactured but you can apply a small amount of light engine oil or electric motor lubricating oil. It doesn't take much; you don't want it to get on the brushes or commutator. Josh
@vica2130
@vica2130 Ай бұрын
How about for the gears?
@Caddydaddy
@Caddydaddy Ай бұрын
@@vica2130 The pinion gear is designed to run dry. Only the ends of the armature should be very lightly oiled.
@Caddydaddy

Light motor oil applied sparingly. No grease and no lubrication elsewhere in the stater. Lubricants contaminate contacts and brushes.. This is all That is needed to the best of my knowledge. Josh

I plan to buy a 2000-2006 Chevy Suburban. If the starter does not look replaced, I plan to take it out to "renew" it. I will not wait until it fails. That is, I plan to replace the wearable parts. For this year range, will I have problem buying rebuild parts for the starter? Thanks
@Caddydaddy
@Caddydaddy Жыл бұрын
None of my regular suppliers show rebuild parts for these starters and they are different from the older units. However, rebuilt starters are available. Something I have done when parts were not available and there was a need for number matching unit, I bought a rebuilt unit and parted it out. Josh

Do you know what causes starters to fail from sitting for long periods of time? I have a starter/solenoid from a Chevrolet Express van that failed. When you turn the key nothing happens. No noise or anything from the starter. The problem is traced to the starter/solenoid. The van has less than 4k miles, but has sat idle for years. There is no outward sign of corrosion. I just hate to buy another starter when this starter has hardly been used.
@Caddydaddy
@Caddydaddy Жыл бұрын
My guess would be that the solenoid has corrosion inside it and the armature is stuck. You might want to remove the starter and take apart the solenoid and see if it moves freely. Could just need to be cleaned up or replaced instead of the entire starter being replaced. Josh
