How to Rebuild a Metal Lathe Chuck

I bought an antique T.R. Almond 6" 3-jaw scroll lathe chuck for my Atlas lathe project. In this video, I tear it down, remove the rust, repair some drop damage and then put it back together again, with too much grease. Tell me what you think and if this chuck looks like it's from 1944. Only problem I can see is the grease will come back and bite you, the chips will stick to it and make a great grinding paste inside. Nice job though.

Yeah, the more I used that grease, the more I regretted it. Any idea what I should have used?

@@RobertAdairWorkshop I just use a machine oil on my chucks, way oil would do it too, can be cleaned out with WD40 or brake clean then re oiled. Gets most of the chips out.

You really shouldn’t use grease in the chuck…it just acts like a magnet for dirt and chips…there are no fast moving parts,, all I’ve ever used on lathe and drill chucks Is a light oil like 3 in 1… I’ve just stripped and cleaned a Pratt Griptru chuck that had been stored from new, but was seized and the seller only wanted £50…The problem was that the original grease had set and was hard like varnish…after cleaning and a light oil it works like new…making it really easy to strip and clean in future..
