It looks like 9 years later your video is still paying off too us DIY engine repair people. It will be very useful to me. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for the video. I may have missed it but you left out two of the most IMPORTANT items. Cleaning the passages in the bowl nut, there is a cross hole that should be clear and the most important item that causes the most trouble in these carbs is the very small vertical hole in the center of the bowl nut. If this passage is clogged up no fuel will flow from the fuel bowl into the red metering tube that feeds the fuel into the intake of the engine.. If you squirt brake clean or other suitable solvent into the recessed center on the threaded end of the bowl nut it should spray out both sides of the horizontal cross hole just under the head of the bowl nut. You have to be very careful to use the right size cleaning wire, because if you make the hole too large the engine will get too much fuel and flood and you will have to purchase a new bowl nut. There is also one other small hole about midway down the vertical housing where the bowl nut threads into. This one is also a very small hole. Failure to made sure both of these holes are properly cleaned can result in improper carb. operation. i.e. the engine won't run. Briggs and Stratton engines also have a similar bowl nut that has a tendency to clog up and is the cause of about 95% of fuel related issues on those engines. Hope this helps. John

Best video I found for this rebuild. I tore down and cleaned my carb, ordered the parts, and then two weeks later when I went to reassemble it I'd forgotten the orientation of the needle valve seat. Your video set me straight. Subscribed.

I changed all of the specified parts Venturi2012 did with the exact carb and i couldn't believe it. the darn thing started. i am happy to report that your video is very helpful and a great teaching tool. i looked at several other videos on Tecumseh carb rebuilding and none compared to yours. They either were not talking straight or the video was not in focus where you could see the parts he was trying to describe. U Rock man and i thank you for helping me out with my resolved issue. I agree that it is the best video for this rebuild I've seen to date. I would have stressed the cleaning of the holes on the bowl nut; especially the tiny one at the bottom of the threads. Also, if doing this on a lawnmower, take off the entire manifold and carb together first then separate them. If you're not familiar with the linkage /spring setup on the mowers, take a digital photo first. Excellent Job, Venturi2012!

Great video! I recently repaired the carb on a 6 HP Tecumseh [vertical crankshaft] engine. On this engine, the carb is mounted tightly to the engine. Fuel inlet has a 90-degree bend, rather than straight, as your engine. To access the bolt heads which mount the carb, I had to remove the muffler for access to those bolts. My carb is one with a plug over the fuel mixture screw area. If available, a small ultrasonic cleaner works better for cleaning the carburetor. It gets into all those tiny passageways and cleans them out perfectly. It will also make the carb's exterior look like new.

Error in my comment. It's not a fuel mixture screw, but a jet, shown at 2:44

Good overall explanation. There is also a small hole in the bowl nut that commonly gets plugged. Sometimes it’s in the threading. A small bread tags wire can be used for cleaning this out. Just strip the plastic off the wire. It’s a perfect size for the hole.

There is a great deal of variety in the design of carburetors like these. One case in point was those used on the Sears Craftsman "Eager-1" engines in the 1970s. They started out being primerless (automatic), but a push-button primer was finally added in 1977 (1978 models).

Great Video! In reinstalling the gas bowl, the center line in the bottom of the gas bowl should be aligned with the air filter inlet to outlet of carb, so the the higher part of bottom in gas bowl is under the float needle valve.

Very meticulously done. Very good! I could not get the O rings out with the paperclip hook but used a wood screw with a gentle pitch hand turning it slowly into the centre of the O rings until the thread bit. But the oil idea helped. Thanks!

I used the information in this video to rebuild the carb on my Tecumseh-powered lawn mower. The mower was hard to start before rebuilding the carb; after the carb rebuild, the mower started on the second pull and ran great. All of the bolts on my mower were standard (fractions of an inch) sizes. I found it easier to remove the muffler and the intake pipe in order to remove the carb. There was little room to access the carb nuts and bolts with the muffler in place. I removed the muffler and air cleaner, then removed the intake pipe and carb as a unit. The carb was easy to remove from the intake pipe.

Good tutorial video, I have a very similar engine only in my MTD 22" snow thrower. You helped me a lot, thanks! PS: 13mm is 0.511811" and 0.5" is 12.7mm, so in practice these two sockets are interchangeable ONLY if you do not need to use a lot of torque, which is the case with the carburetor bowl screw. Otherwise the looser fit may cause slippage, a stripped head and injured fingers.

excellent Teaching video. I bought a used Scotts Push mower last week and wish i hadn't when i got it home because no matter what i did it would not start, finally after changing the Plug & filter i realized it was not getting gas so i tried the squirt some starter fluid trick in the carb and it immediately started for only 3 seconds, OK after opening the carb bowl it was filled with a jello like substance. the gas had congealed.. it was full of gooey gas. i did what he did and now i am mowing.

Two years old but just in case you see this, I really appreciate you showing this video bcz I’ve never done this b4. Just wondering why you didn’t show the most difficult part where you place the needle onto the float? It’s obviously a tricky thing to do but you should be able to include the most difficult part of a video since that may be the entire reason we clicked on it in the first place. Also, it didn’t look like the needle was placed on the float just before you attached the bowl. At least you could could have shown that with a closer look. Thanks for doing this video, just had a couple concerns.
@gordbaker8964 жыл бұрын
Use a 11/64" drill bit to set float. Drill across carb casting, float on top. Be VERY careful installing than idle jet. There is a captive ball inside the tube and you MUST have the carb in operating orientation before tightening the jet in. Also look for a tiny vent hole in the top of the casting on the engine side.

That is for the idle mixture adjustment/air screw. It's a preset needle that just needs cleaning. I would find a drill bit to clean it out, by hand of course. I have a set that I believe goes that small. Or try a toothpick or metal pick tool.

When did tecumseh start using the garbage metric sizes on their engines? I have never used a 9 mm wrench or socket on any fastener. The bowl nut is half inch and other 2 are 3/8 inch and 11/16 inch.
@Venturi201211 жыл бұрын
The two needles are preset, so there are no adjustments possible. You should only need two of the small o-rings, unless you want more in case you're rebuilding another carb. And yes like it says in the description, The engine starts on the first pull every time.
@Venturi201211 жыл бұрын
If the correct amount of gas is in the carb's bowl, you can push the primer and see gas being pushed into the intake. Just remove the air filter or whatever you need to see inside. Either not enough gas is in the bowl, the primer bulb is cracked, the passages are plugged, or your bowl gaskets has a bad leak.

You forgot to remove the Welch plug on the side of the carb body. Not often, but sometimes the intermediate jets under that plug are blocked. The engine will surge. The old tecumseh manual says to reseal that plug with fingernail polish.

Is it a fast leak, or a leak you usually find out after its been sitting overnight? Make sure the float doesn't have gas in it(If it's a brass float), and make sure it sits level. Also make sure the seat seated properly. I had to put a little wd-40 on a seat once, and push it hard to get it to stop leaking. If none of that works, donyboy73 made a video of these carbs having a tiny hole on the side that when clogged, causes a very slow leak.

Hello, my tecumseh tvm140 with 632253 carb engine won't start anymore and I find the spark flooded by gas after few starting tries. But: there is a spark, I have cleaned 'n checked the carburetor, cleaned all small holes, floater ok, needle ok, jets factory resetted (1,5 turn out from zero for main jet, 1 turn for air mix), no fuel leak and everything seems ok plus new fresh oil in the engine cup. I have no clue what else can I check? Can u help? A hint is that it stopped while working, it was running in idle but not supported the effort and turned off and never started again.
