Just rebuilding my own dual port 1600 - gotta say this has been soooo useful - I got myself a set of micrometers and a bore guage - initially I struggled to use them but your content has helped me work it out. also love the V-block great idea I'm going use that to check my crank - many thanks dude

I did an air cooled Porsche engine last year and would like to play around with a VW at somepoint so I love your videos and will be watching more. I've made the investment in the tools and the yoke is the same so I'm good to go. It looks like the VW bottom end is a bit similar, but the Porsche uses a main bearing between eash connecting rod with 8 total. Really cool design and unique.

what is the measurement on the small one on the block? where is the stock size of this same one for the case bore size? can't seem to find that one?

Hey there! Yes Goose has a beautiful color 4SURE! That is Polar Silver L324. I have seen it listed as a more silver color in earlier 56 models. You can view the colors here on the Samba... great reference. www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/paintcodestype1.php

Yes you do... your going to want to check your oil gaps... checking these measurement's will give you a good idea. Never just assume everything will fit no problem.

FYI you cannot accurately measure bearings with them outside of the case. Lack of bearing crush will give you a 'sprung' number. You need to put the bearings in place, torque the case THEN measure. Wasting your time otherwise.

Yup... that's what I was saying brother... just like with the rods that had to be tourqed down to get the readings. The measurement outside the case on the main bearings would be without the crush.

why does the crankshaft have a groove in the oil hole? I know one Alfa Romeo machine where that groove is only at 1 cyl and I wonder why and why all together

Not exactly sure man... guess it helps move the oil through the bearing.

Also how does one know if the case requires line bore thanks

The easiest test for this is if you can see the old bearing info in any of the main bearing journals. Like is there an impression that has been left behind. But as a rule of thumb always have the case line bored... save yourself some guess work and possibly burning up your engine with clearances that aren't right for the oil.

Unless you are building a Formula VEE engine, do you really need to “blue print” a street engine?

The blueprinting process is pretty Grey as in how it is defined by each builder but I'm sure that is the way with many things.

As far as I'm concerned and measurable amount is too far... If it is more than a few thou I would have the crank reground and polished.
