I just did this during my re-gear. A bench vise, 1-1/2" socket, 1-1/8" socket, snap ring pliers, good to go.

Makes me wonder if you could do this with a ball joint press, or a large C-clamp. How much pressure did it take to unload that snap ring?

not much! i used the press because that’s what i have. the rebuild tool uses a nut and bolt setup with spacers. where you use a ratchet or impact gun to tighten it down.

Are you sure you aren't supposed to put the bushing on the ball, and then press that assembly into the body?

Yea, I dont think it matters. You could put the ball into the bushing first, but then the bushing would be that much harder to get into the end. This didnt damage the bushing (which is why I greased it before pressing it), and got the job done. Theyre holding up great so far!

​​@@SWBCrawlerOn my RC bushing it encircles the ball so the hole for the ball is 10 percent smaller than than the mount. I haven't tried but I don't think I'd be able to squeeze the ball into that bushing or I'd damage it if I hit it in. Essentially installation is reverse of disassembly. At 4:32 you would take that assembly and press it into the mount.

@@xcpointx Yea. like i said. i think it'd work either way. in my case it pushed in with very little resistance. no damage to the bushing. I don't know that i'd be able to hammer it in, if that's what you're trying.

I'll be doing this as soon as I find out what size Joint rebuild kit a need to use. It's a 1.5" bushing, so smaller than everything that I see that's 2-2.5"..

It’s important to mention that the ball has two different length arms. The longer end is marked with a groove. This is the end that faces the snap ring. If you want the ends of the ball to protrude equally on both sides when assembled then follow my tip.

If you don't have the Johnny Joint tool how do you know it might work better your way is pretty nice there's no dumb air hammer involved. Your way holds all the parts still so then you have time to get tools and make sure things are assembled properly

i don’t know that it’s better. did i say that? the point is that you can do this with a press IF you don’t have the tool already. since a press is common in many shops while specialized tools are not. if you do a lot of johnny joints it may be worth buying the tool. thanks for watching!
