You don't have to stick your finger up his rear...you can actually slide your fingers (while pressing) up from just below the anus on both sides. I have to do this a couple times a week for my pups. Something very satisfying with popping a bunch of crud out of those sacks
@RaechelleBennett7825 жыл бұрын
My wee dog is 13 yrs old and I have to take her approx every four months to have her anal sacs expressed. I just had her done a month ago and she's already scooting. I do not feel her sacs full yet--quite flat in there. Her poops are very normal, as always. Her anus looks fine--no irritation or swelling. I just don't like running to the vet and getting charged $50 for them to just look at her, say she's fine, and send us home. So are there other reasons dogs scoot? Can dogs have hemorrhoids? I know she gets a fair amount of fibre in her diet, so...?

Thanks so much for your vid . I’m taking my little foxy/Chihuahua older dog to the vets to get this done today . I never knew about this before! I asked the nurse yesterday if he’s wormed why does he keep pushing and dragging his butt around and looking uncomfortable and she told me about this. It’s something that not a lot of us know about. I can get it done here in Australia for around $40 and a vet nurse will do it... saves having a very expensive consult with the vet! *$70. And that’s another thing .. why oh why do all the Vets nowadays demand their money /payment on the day ??!!! It’s so money hungry ! Years ago they used to give you an account and let you pay it off within the month. When you have a sick animal you have no choice but to scrape up the money somehow. My Pappillion had an abscess that was not detectable but burst through the skin. I watched the videos and allowed my dog to also watch the videos. I expressed the gland and washed the area thoroughly with Dawn then applied Neosporin. I noted that the swelling, on the left side, where the impaction had burst through the skin, was significantly less. I will express the right gland tomorrow......One was enough and a bit overwhelming. My question is what happens now? I can not go to a Vet. So now what? Also it bled out some. I used an Absorbent pad to contain any leakage. He seemed to understand that I was doing my best to relieve him of his discomfort. He immediately went to sleep afterwards. My pet gets anal gland infections/abscess frequently! I'm quick to spot them in early stages. My advice is to start to wash his/her anal glands with (1).Povidone-Iodine Swabsticks available in CVS (2). then with a Gauze Pad gently wipe with Aloe Vera Gel (3). apply Neosporin on his/her glands. (4.) feed your pet Canned dog food better for pooping when anal gland is infected. I do this routine with my pet 3 times a day when I see his glands red and swollen and I have him wear a cone 24/7 till I see his glands back to normal. It works and I avoid the vet bills.

Hi Huxley, if your dog frequently suffers from blocked anal glands, she may require regular vet/veterinary nurse visits to have them checked. We would recommend getting in touch with your vet to ask, as they will be able to advise on her case specifically. @@pdsa I've just visited the vet and they were- forgive my wording- utterly useless. They said it was fine despite looking like it had an infection and started prescribing medicine she didn't even need, they diagnosed normal anal sacs and still gave me medicine for skin irritation. I spent 1,500 on them, they looked so promising and professional. I can't even have a refund because they did so many unecessary tests. I'm bringing her to a different, more credible vet but the way the first ine robbed me of my money angers me, sigh.

@@huxley8671I know it won't return your money, but have you thought about giving them a really bad review on every platform you can find? Everytime I've moved to a new area, I've picked a new vet using two methods - ring the nearest shelter and ask who they use/recommend, and then check all the reviews. Something like what you've written there would put me right off. Not only could you stop someone else going through what you have, you could also put them out of business. After word got around about one vet local to me doing unnecessary surgeries, everyone stopped going there and his business went under. I know it doesn't get you your cash back, but it does stop animals being put through unnecessary procedures for profit - and if we all do it when we come across a bad vet, we can all help look out for each other and limit the amount they can steal/misuse our trust. Really hope your dog is feeling much better now 🍀🐾💕

add brown flake or what?? I can't understand does anyone know what this fiber is.
@t-and-p9 ай бұрын
She's talking about adding breakfast cereals that have the "roughage" type of fibre (eg the sort that gets your digestive tract working and bulks out faeces). The two she mentioned that are safe for dogs are bran flakes and Weetabix (the latter being a bit of a British institution). Essentially, you're looking for to get their guts working well with something that contains wholegrain or bran, and no sweeteners so that it's safe for dogs. The idea is that, if their faeces is the right consistency, it should trigger the glands to open themselves naturally, without you needing to intervene.
@Camerongough20145 жыл бұрын
How often do you have to do this !?
@pdsa5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ellie, We would usually recommend getting your vet to check your dogs anal glands as often as they need it. You'll be able to see when they're having discomfort as they'll usually scoot their bum on the floor or lick or chew their back end a lot. If you're seeing these signs, it's best to book an appointment with your vet. Some dogs may need their glands checking regularly if they suffer with infections or impaction (a build up of firmer material inside the anal glands) whereas other dogs may visit the vets less often for this. Your vet will be able to advise you on the appropriate timing for your dog and can check the anal glands during your pets annual check-up or sooner if needed. Best wishes, Yasmin at PDSA.

What kind/extent of discomfort does it cause a dog when NOT done? My dog is no longer alive (sadly), and I didn’t know this could be the cause of her occasional butt-scooting and butt-licking. Could it have been very uncomfortable for her to live with? Does it hurt? Itch? What does dogs/wolves do in nature, where no humans are there to empty their glands?
@pdsa4 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for getting in touch. The good news is that not all dogs need their anal glands emptying - most dogs will manage to empty the glands naturally as they go to the toilet. This is also true of wolves, which is a big relief to our vet teams! So it’s likely your lovely dog was a lucky pup who didn’t need her gland emptying and her occasional scooting or licking is very unlikely to be related to a blocked or uncomfortable anal gland. You can find out more about causes of scooting on our Pet Health Hub: www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/pet-health-hub/symptoms/scooting-in-dogs. We hope that answers your questions and we would like to express our sympathy that you’ve lost your canine companion - we’re sure she was a great friend to you.

There is another way to do it externally. This is the internal way because they are also feeling the glands to check for problems. But if you already know your pet had problems and they are butt scooting, smelling really fishy and licking the area a lot, then you could probably just do the outside external method. You can find plenty of other videos on here that show the usual outside method. But doing it too often or when it's not needed can cause problems. Hope this helps :-)
