I fully agree with you Tina. I have a 15 year old Rat Terrier girl who has very active anal glands. They charge $27.00 to do this procedure at the vets office and that’s if you can get an appointment when it’s needed. My girl has to have it done 1-2 times a month. The vet is aware of this and we know we are just trying to keep her comfortable. They truly are uncomfortable when they are full and while she doesn’t enjoy it, she knows Mom is easy and I believe she appreciates the relief. 🤘🏼🤍

No, Penny needs an owner who will love her enough to stop feeding her too much and place her on a weight reduction diet. Penny's owner needs to care enough to get outside with her and exercise her and exercise her until she loses some weight. Allowing one's dog to become so obese , is not an act of love. Exercising your dog is an act of love. Our husky was never overweight and she was exercised constantly and placed on the specific diet that our veterinarian prescribed for her. She never had to have her glands expressed by the veterinarian. She lived 16 years and she was extremely active until one week before she died.

A depression era person so this expense was troubling for her as a conservative widow alone. I told her I was sure she could watch the vet and learn how. She told me I was right! All my life I've had dogs, never had that problem, never needed to go to the groomers, just brushed daily. Wow, I REALLY have dodged that bullet so far!!

Not a veterinary field worker. A CVT -- degree and licensed at state and national levels. We are nurses. Anal sac expression is actually one of the "easier" skills, compared to urinary catheters, central lines, etc.

@@kellyflood8136 I love that Congratulations on your accomplishments. I agree anal gland expression is one of the easier skills .But with anything you do becomes easy with practice.Im a veterinary assistant. And trust even with blood draws depending on the breed it's a hit or miss.

My mom was a dog groomer and had a shop that was built on to our house. She used to take all the dogs out to our garden to express.. she said it was good for the soil. We grew vegetables. LOL

I can always tell when vegetables have been grown and fertilized with K-9 Anal glands. Any really good produce has got the Anal Gland emblem on it.

As I look at the thumbnail for this video, and into that dog's eyes, I notice how much is being conveyed in that look. There is a hint of relief; perhaps it is a little easier to sit and roll around with that release having occured. But... There is more in those eyes than that. Much more. Poor lil thing...

My dog is so anxious it's impossible to take her to the vet without having her sedated but she trusts me so I can do anything and she'll be willing. Last time I had to bring her in for this is costs me a LOT of money and time bc of her temper and sedation. Thank you for this guide.

Avoid having anal expression done at the groomers. Was warned that this really should only be done by a veterinarian/vet nurse because of the risk of actually causing other issues like abscesses.

Groomers do anal gland expressions on every dog, every time. That’s totally not necessary. Glands should only be expressed if they are a problem

I was taught by a veterinarian that i worked with to never express a dogs anal glands from squeezing on the outside because it can build up a lot of scar tissue and to always do it internally just like you did.
@maxinemoore60773 жыл бұрын
Michele Evans, i didn’t know that , I’m glad you said that because I’ve been doing it on the outside, thanks x
@inuchan743 жыл бұрын
I've not heard that but it makes sense. I know that doing it from the outside doesn't always empty them, groomers do it that way and we have people all the time say "but the groomer just did that!"
@kittyrose73193 жыл бұрын
It can burst actually. Much worse. It's illegal in most places for a groomer to do anal glands because of that.

Ha well I'm an RN retired and have done My dogs anal glands and scraped their teeth for over twenty years with zero problems U can do it with light pressure Don't believe it....... Follow the money trail
@audramuth41472 жыл бұрын
Nah …. You can do it from the outside . Nothing wrong with it . It isn’t ideal but if it’s only done once a blue moon it’s not going to cause scar tissue .

Tbh, its usually best to get a pro to do any and all butt related medical care. Dog or human.

Vets normally don't do it -- a CVT or sometimes an experienced, unlicensed veterinary assistant may, unless there are complications that require flushing, etc.

Poor Penny, you could see she was like: "At least pixelate my face" 🐕 All jokes aside - I've had dogs my whole life and this is one procedure that is a must for them. My 2 bichon girls have theirs checked regularly. The discomfort they must feel when they're full to bursting.

Thank you for your knowledge and professionalism. my little buddy is needing this done every couple months and he is very uneasy around anyone that isn’t me or his momma. I’ve read online that this little issue can be caused by not having enough fiber in his diet and he will start scooting when he needs this done. He gets so upset when anyone comes near him that he doesn’t know that they put a muzzle on him and I can tell that he is nowhere near as relaxed as penny in your video. Should I perform this at home where he is more relaxed and should I be changing his diet. He is a chiwahwah and he is a year old.
