Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is my absolute top favorite anime/manga. I can't even start to describe how much this series means to me. I have a full collection of the manga, guide books, artbooks and more in my bedroom! The anime was unfortunately quite bad, but it will always have a special place in my heart. But if there's one reason I would recommend anyone to watch it, it would be...because of the soundtrack. It's not only the most beautiful anime OST I've ever heard, but the most beautiful soundtrack of anything I've heard ever. Never have I felt the essence of a story being captured so well in a music form. Even if you don't watch the anime, please do listen to the music in between your reading of the manga! It will pull you right into their world and help you truly "get it".

Peak Kajiura Yuki. Came out right after Mai Hime. I would say Tsubasa Chronicle is basically Mai Hime's soundtrack with a really bland story.

Tsubasa Chronicle suffered from what a lot of 2000's anime suffered: not being loyal to the manga, a lot of filler episodes and the order of arcs was changed too bad because the anime has an amazing music and the japanese cast is pretty good, the voice actor of the main characters are pretty popular: Irino Miyu was Astral in Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL, Maaya Sakamoto was Zero in Yashahime, Kurogane's voice actor is Komamura's voice actor(i forgot his name)and Daisuke Namikawa is Otes in Yu-Gi-Oh SEVENS and Go Rush.

I DNF'd the manga after I learned both the Sakura and Syaoran we were following were clones of their original selves which are two different god damn people that we have to get introduced to but not only that despite the clone of Syaoran being a clone he's the PARENT of the real one? The actual fuck that's not how clones fucking work. That's suuuuuuuper stupid.
@Theloster

@@twilightguardian Are you sure you read everything? when we first see Tsubasa(Syaoran )'s father entrusting his sword to his son, his face is silhouetted. then the clones reincarnated as his parents and we see (Syaoran )'s father's face clearly as now we know that his father is his clone. i want to think that Tsubasa(Syaoran )'s original parents are different Sakura and Syaoran that those we know about, but when Tsubasa(Syaoran)fought Seishirō, Seishirō said that he reminds him of his father and as know Seishirō fought the clone before which proves my theory is wrong.

What you've described here is exactly why, while this is my favorite series of all time, I can't recommend the anime to anyone. You're so right about the story begging to be told and the anime barely scratches the surface and at times even breaks what how certain characters would actually have reacted to each other. It made me so sad to see this story butchered in the way that it was. If you ever are in a mindspace for it, I would wholeheartedly recommend reading the manga. Maybe even play the soundtrack from the anime as you're reading it, because at least that piece of media was done well. It also makes me sad that even if the OVAs are animated well, it's hard to share with friends if they don't know the context of the rest of the story. I love it. But it'll likely be mine alone in my friend group because of the way it was handled.

This is a fantastic video man, I’ve been wrestling with how the formative media I still cling to years later changes as time passes, how I’ll never connect to it in the exact same way. I had for years chased those feelings rewatching the shows in some vain hope I would be able to feel that same connection once again. I’ve only recently truly come to terms with what your video essentially says: how the viewing experience is inextricably tied to your feelings about the show and that is unchangeable, unreproducable, and completely non-transitive. When I show someone a show that saved my life when I was 15, they’re probably not gonna connect with it in the same way I did as a severely depressed 15 year old, and that’s okay. This doesn’t devalue my feelings toward the show, and nothing can change or replicate the impact that these pieces of media has on me at the time. All I can do now is look back fondly and continue forward.

To the people who hated the anime, I hope you stumble upon this video as a full explanation as to why it was bad. I wanna thank you for shedding light on this series. Your last bit about how you watched it at a very particular moment in your life was very relatable. I had watched the anime when I was around 8, only to watch the OVAs, become absolutely confuzzled by it and read the manga 10 years later with full on tears pumping out of my eyes. I think that bad anime, in some cases, can open new doors. Even for fans of the show like me who didn't even know it was altered from the real story. Great video essay!

I was alone for the majority of the ride so I just watched a bunch of different anime on my phone. I saw this one and felt so disappointed by the end (I didn’t know what ovas where at the time cause I was fresh to anime having learned about it less than a year before that. I also felt that there was a better show in there and I’d love to see it remade someday

There are 2 pieces of media that really defined a lot of my adolescent life, one of them was Kingdom Hearts, and the other one is Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. Both have the same issue, they're quite hard to recommend because of how convoluted they both can be. I appreciate your video, and I love that you shared your story with this show that means so much to me. I've been looking for a review of it and I'm glad I found yours because its deeply personal to you. And I can agree that the anime itself was a far cry from what it should've been. That said, I feel like you didn't really say *why* it was "Average" or middle of the road. You more so said that you felt that something was missing or hiding underneath (which it was, I will admit for sure) but you brushed through a lot of content. The Pokemon-esque world the first visit was somewhat bland, but it was the first time showing different magic systems and how they worked. The second world was a twist on a feudalistic medieval fantasy land when Sakura was barely regaining consciousness, not even able to talk yet but being drawn to the power of her feathers, and it shows how the power could be used for evil. You mentioned nothing about Fey, or Kurogane more than "They're a mage and a samurai" when their interactions are some of the funniest in the whole show. Not even a spotlight to Mokona, who IS a star in their own right 😂😂 There is a lot about Tsubasa that is great, if you're willing to look past the poor animation, and sad adaptation that it got. Syaoran's devotion and love for Sakura was always front and center at all times, he was willing to sacrifice everything for her, and that marked me so much growing up. Sakura slowly realizing that these people that she doesn't know AT ALL are really there to help her, but she doesn't just want to be a burden, she wanted to fight for herself even tho she not always could, which is why I loved the episode with the race, aside from giving us Tomoyo + Sakura one more time 😂😂 it was SO good! AND THE MUSICCCCCC, omg the music, Kajiura Yuki is masterful. The ending of this story gets really really convoluted, which is why I have a hard time recommending this show, but it is really good and bombastic. But there is a lot of good to be taken out of this show too.

I watched TRC in VERY similar circonstances and liked it a lot at the time, mostly because i like stories about crossing dimensions and i also had nothing else to do at the time. But I went into it knowing that the manga was more complete and better in general so I very quickly started reading the manga and now I will never be able to rewatch the anime (except the OVAs) ever again. The manga is just too good in comparison (the anime music slaps though). So yeah watch the anime if you need something light and average to pass the time but DEFINITELY read the manga (and then watch the OVAs) if the story intrigues you. Just a quick warning: the story stands on its own but is more easily understandable if you read xxxHolic at the same time, especially for the 2nd half. Also TRC features a LOT of other CLAMP cameos so having read their other stories - especially Cardcaptor Sakura, X/1999 (and before that its ’prequel’ Tokyo Babylon to have the full X/1999 experience), RG Veda and Magic Knight Rayearth - enhances the experience further

I remember buying and reading the first chapter of the manga on a whim in my early preteens, and I think I remember finding it cute but I wasn’t interested enough to keep going, I had no knowledge of CLAMP or any of their series, though I managed to pick up on the homoeroticism between Touya and Yukito almost immediately. If I had continued with the manga I probably would’ve ended up being really confused by the story so I’m sure I dodged a bullet since I was so young then.

I remmeber seeing Tsubasa on comcast in 2009. I was 9 years old and starting to learn more about anime that were made for teenagers and adults. I thought that in comparison to the other content available On Demand at the time (Monster [2008], Claymore [2007]) that Tsubasa was very childish. I felt even at a young age exactly the same as you, like I was watching an abridged story where the real narative was obscured beneath the surface. I remmeber feeling unsatisfied as fuck with the ending, almost robbed of knowing how this multi-dimensional slogfest was going to payoff. I ended up picking up some of the manga at my local library. I found entire dimensions that were replaced in the anime, I can only imagine most of its content was neutered to make the release more accessible to young kids. I'm happy you made this video, it made me appreciate my memories of this show more. I didn't expect to see anyone talk about this forgettable show, especially not to this depth.

Thought that that thumbnail looked familiar! I only watched a few episodes, but remember it as enjoyable. Average doesn't mean bad eh. (Then again I was probably also in a situation where anything would've impressed me.) It's kinda like bad experiences eh. Would I recommend getting lost in the rain without an umbrella? Ofc not. But I still don't really regret that it happened (now that I'm back inside and didn't catch a cold at least) cause I now have a better understanding of the area, found some interesting small streets along the way, and it's a neat story. I have been reading and collecting all of CLAMP's works for some time now... and the thing with Tsubasa is that you need to 1) Have read all or most of CLAMP's previous series to get the most enjoyment out of all the cameos/crossovers happening. 2) Read the manga while simultaneously reading xxxHolic, as major plot points cross over. So it's hard to recommend, specially with such a disappointing anime adaptation, but it is a very special work 🌸

Good video but disagree with the conclusion. I hook people on Ysubasa via xxxHolic and Card Capture Sakura. I have been deep in the CLAMP fandom for over a decade. Yes the anime kinda sucks because you can't really write an epic high fantasy world traveling tragedy for children. I implore anyone who took interest to explore the manga alongside the xxxHolic manga the story is good and deserves justice better than the NHK anime could ever do it. The saving grace of the show is one of the best soundtracks made by Yuki Kajiura and this is saying a lot because she is already one of the best composers in my humble opinion.

Omg I totally get this! Never watched Tsubasa myself, but I have so many Anime series that are special to me for specific reasons. A big example for me is Tales of Zesteria the X. I freaking love that Anime. Sure, it's cheesy, sure, it's pretty predictable sometimes, but damn, is it beautiful and everything I wanted ever since I was a kid. I love fantasy, and this Anime had the Fantasy RPG feeling, funky characters, interesting relationships, boring arcs and intruiging arcs, It was the perfect balance. Not only that, but it had LGBTQ+ themes in it which made it even more special to me. It's not perfect, but it's very special to me. I never played the game, but I watched a REALLY long playthrough of the game. Tbh, I still liked the Anime better after that. The characters in the game were more fleshed out, sure, but the Anime had better story content (IMO). The Anime was animated by UFOtable, so of course it was BEAUTIFUL! I must rewatch it for the 4th time lol. I feel this way about No. 6 (the Anime) as well. I won't elaborate further as I already wrote a lot, but yes, this video was awesome. Very relateable!

I gently disagree that Tales of Zestiria the anime is better and can be more appreciated than the game- though I understand it did write some parts in an interesting way, giving the anime its own charm. First of all, the game kills a LOT of important characters such as Heldalf (the villain) and Eizen (Edna's brother who mutated into a dragon). Those deaths are part of the OVERALL theme of the story- you see, past Shepherds like Claudius didn't want to stain his hands with death- and that limited his capacity as a Shepherd. Sorey had to be the balance between the former Shepherds who absolutely shunned death- and those who actually use it to "purify" those who have been completely taken over by malevolence (in lay man's terms, this is no different from doing exorcisms on possessed humans- but in Eizen's case, he's a seraph who couldn't turn back to being a seraph by the powers of purification. In other words, the only way to save him is to really kill him.) The anime saved Heldalf and Eizen from death (ironically it still allowed Dezel to be killed as in the game- probably because Dezel is as targeted by haters as Rose- so they didn't see any reason to "rewrite" him to give him a proper redemption) BUT SAVING THEM AND CHANGING THEIR FATES LACKED THE CONNECTION TO THOSE POINTS IN THE GAME THAT ARE THEMATICALLY ESSENTIAL to it.. For example, what is the impact of saving BOTH Heldalf and Eizen to Sorey's character as a Shepherd? The anime was quiet about that. Furthermore, there is greater impact that Sorey was the one to kill Heldalf who, in the manga, appears to be his biological father. Heldalf had to die to be released from Michael's curse. Making him live is tantamount to forcing Heldalf to go back to the world of the living that essentially was the PRIMARY reason he became the Lord of Calamity. Heldalf was filled with despair, owing to the tragedies he personally went through- the reason he hated the world. Just putting him back in without the proper "justification" seems to me to be... uh plain, lazy writing. Second of all, the anime takes out the parts where Sorey almost died at Glaivend Basin when he first meets Heldalf- and it's the reason he realizes that he's not strong enough- the same reason why he underwent training. The anime replaced that with Sorey x Alisha fanservice... which took away the most important plot developments in the story- and I know for a fact that even male fans of Zestiria decried this aspect as can be seen in the live reviews of the anime. Third, Mikleo's part was abbreviated in the anime. Male gamers complained a LOT that he had too much exposure in the game- but they forget that Mikleo is the "historian" and chronicler that allows us to know everything about the legend of the Shepherd of the Age of Chaos. He is as integral to the story as Sorey- so putting in Alisha in so MANY parts where they could've fleshed out Mikleo's character more is just... unfair. Fourth, the anime left even MORE questions unanswered. If dragons can be purified, then are Shepherds supposed to be ALL-POWERFUL as Michael seems to say they are in the Celestial Record? The book Sorey loves to read is an idealization of the Shepherd- something that also brought Michael his greatest tragedy- because he idealized the Shepherd way too much that presented him as a lone warrior, traveling the world to combat evil and absolutely defeat it. From this view, Shepherds seem to have an IMMENSE BURDEN- to be as infallible and flawless as a god. But Sorey proved that Shepherds are still HUMAN- they CANNOT SAVE EVERYONE. Actually, I was happy that someone discussed Tales of Zestiria in this comment thread. I also love No. 6- and you're right- it's time we see "braver" representations of LGBTQ-A in anime- portrayals that don't play nor pander on the stigma and the homophobia. We all know that both anime and games are NOT the most ideal place for ideologically advanced views. Gays as clowns, comic relief, villains and traitors, sadistic lovers, obsessed best friends etc. are FAR from how straight male and female characters are represented. Moreover, gays can't fall in love in non-BL settings. But why should that be the case? Heroes can be gay- after all what does sexual orientation and gender have to do with wisdom and conscience? In the end, whether it's the anime or the game, I'm glad there's a character like Sorey of Tales of Zestiria. He's still, for me, the best-written LGBTQ-A protagonist in a shonen game/anime... and it might take decades to have a following for him since neither the anime or the gaming community are very keen on criticizing their own prejudice. Sorry for the long comment- but I'm really happy to read yours! Have a wonderful week~~ ^_^

@@turquoisemoon3654 oh, i definetly agree with both spectrums of the story - the anime and game. For me, my personal preference is simply the anime series due to the circumstances i watched it in and how it captivated me. Yes, some characters were butchered in the anime, i didn't like how the long white haired girl wasn't funny anymore, and that the yellow dress girl with the umbrella got less development. Anyhow, from the standpoint of someone who knows and understands both the game and anime, I'd have to say i definitely find the game to be more *boring*. The anime has better pacing in that area and the hours of annoying grinding are cut out. Thank you for sharing your opinion ☺️ Oh and yes, i remember those deaths. It's a bit strange that i didn't get to see those in the anime. I feel like they could have replaced those 2 berseria episodes with just more story for Zesteria. That is another gripe of mine. However, i find the anime to OVERALL be more beautiful and more enjoyable. Thank you for your time.

Yes, Lailah (the white-haired lady) was hilarious in the game. She has her share of quirks (loves to read someone's fortunes and is practically obsessed with anything spherical or circular in shape). Edna is so sarcastic and narcissistic in the game you'd hate to love her and love to hate her. Mikleo is a tsundere in the game- someone who always flouts Edna's expectations (when she kept waiting for him to call her beautiful) as much as Edna loved to bully him and make him look stupid. Rose is the down-to-earth young woman who's afraid of ghosts, burps like a drunk, and acts like a tomboy because she's raised by mercenaries and cutthroats. But she's got a heart for street children and anyone who's been a victim of abuse, poverty, and neglect. Her sense of justice is the antithesis to Alisha's. Alisha thinks politics is the best remedy to all political problems. Rose believes that's naive- and espouses the other extreme- if politics itself allows evil and injustice to go on, then the remedy must be beyond politics. In any case, I found the game more exciting than the anime... since Sorey in the game is essentially a flawed yet funny, lovable, adventurous ruin-geek- not the serious, poker-faced, Shepherd-obsessed young man who takes orders from Alisha and seems to put more importance on his human squires- when in fact, Sorey is supposed to have no knowledge of humans because he was raised by seraphim in a seraphim village untouched by human presence. The fact that Sorey displayed telepathic powers BEFORE the squire pact with Alisha was formed was just- really, REALLY careless writing on ufotable's part- since resonance with seraphim is possible for SOME humans- but resonance between Shepherds and humans BEFORE the squire pact? That's unheard of... and the fact that ufotable took it back by making Sorey deaf to Alisha's call in the succeeding episodes just made it more obvious that that PART was a mistake and needed to be... uh, forgotten. Also, when Sorey and Alisha decided to recruit humans to accompany them to the north before the final battle- that just literally threw the fandom off. Humans can't see hellions at all... so what good is it for them to accompany Sorey and his team when they can't even see the enemy they're supposed to fight? In any case, I still think the anime is better than any other shonen-fantasy anime out there. I was happy it didn't end up as a fanservice alternative that absolutely changed the game. Unlike Sabikui Bisco that pretentiously pandered onto fujoshis disappointed with the lightnovel, at least ufotable gave us what most shonen anime can't- a DECENT ending that doesn't try to hide the LGBTQ nuances. I'm glad that the anime remained faithful where it matters the most- at least. Sorey and Mikleo got to be reunited so they could fulfill their personal dreams as they had promised to each other. Though the anime again, violated the rule about sublords and Shepherds (in the game, the signs that Sorey must've become a seraph were more explicit- I mean he did sleep for at least 700 years so there's no way he could've survived in his human form) it's better than turning the story into a countryside boy-meets-princess-and-rescues-her-then-marries-her kind of plot we've seen hundreds of times since Prince of Persia and Super Mario Bros.

@@turquoisemoon3654 no need to explain the characters to me, i already know them☺️. But you raise good points i hadn't noticed before. I do have a knack for lore, but I'm not too gung-ho about it as some my be so the differences you pointed out i honestly hadn't noticed despite watching the anime 3 times😂. Maybe I'm just dumb lol. I like both Sorey's, actually. In the anime, his personality is easy to comprehend and good enough. In the game, his personality is explored more as well as the relationships between him and his teammates. He's my favorite character in the tales of series, as well as Rose! I am also a fellow person who ships Sorey and Mikleo, and i think their relationship was portayed well in both mediums, but a bit better in the game version, lol.

@@rosiisartistic Thanks for the reply. I apologize for the explanations... I was guessing that when you mentioned a white-haired lady and a girl with an umbrella- I thought you were talking about Lailah and Edna- and that I needed to introduce the characters in greater detail so people reading the comments would understand who is who. But since you already know them, I'm just happy. Thanks again, and have a wonderful week~~ ^_^

The thing is that animation studios usualy change whole concepts of a great already manga or light novel masterpiece. the same thing happen with Ken Akamatsu's works, both Negima! Magister Negi Magi and UQ-Holder. Personaly, I have read the manga Tsubasa Chronicles and it's soo good. I have all the volumes.
