How To: Record Both Sides of Your Helmet Communications

Here's a somewhat effective, if primitive, way to capture both sides of your helmet communications that will work with any system that uses in-helmet speakers. These are the parts we used:

after a lot of headaches, I'm doing the exact same thing i bought a cheap usb C wireless with two little mics, i put one in my helmet and the other on my chest

Thanks for the tip. I too use the Lexin communicators and have been looking for a way to record conversation. I plan on using a GoPro Max for my next trip but think I can use your idea to route into an old cell phone. Or, I could always use my Hero4 Black for primarily recording audio. Same thing I was doing. It's a shame you can't just put the speakers on the other side of that splitter. When I try that all you get is what comes in from the speaker. The mic does come thru but at such a low volume you can't hear it.

Yeah, I'm convinced there's a hard-wired solution, but I don't have the ambition to go through the schematics and try to match up all the impedances. And I don't want to have to re-invent it every time we upgrade our comms. Just switching from the old Lexin to the new one, they changed all the connector types.

so you have 2 micrponones plugged into the GoPro, One for you and one for your headset to hear that. you also have the one mictophone for your comm system and ofcorse the speakers that the GoPro listens to? I didnt think of that but alot of microphones

Yes indeed, it's a lot of microphones! The one behind the speaker isn't noticeable, other than the wire for it. The bulkiest part of the whole thing is those 1/8" plugs. This winter, I (Mike) might start hacking into the setup and just permanently splice the wires together to slim it down.

Got mine set up the exact same way! Did the MABDR and had good luck with it. I have been using a purple panda mic with an adapter for my personal one and it's beginning to crackle a little. May pick up one of these with the trs so I wont have to use the extra adapter. It could be the bad connection. Appreciate ya sharing guys!!! Can't wait for some warmer weather!!!
