i still have a vcr and digital converter box as well as an analog tv. if i wanted to i could record the game (or whatever broadcast program) onto a videotape and then transfer the program to my computer with a vhs to digital transfer cable. i could then burn the program to a dvd with a dvd writer. i've been transferring a lot of my old vhs tapes this way and though it's not HD it does work satisfactorily. so glad i kept all my outdated stuff!

ViewHD VHD-1X2MN3D is labeled as a splitter. Does it have a second function?

I couldn't afford a startech capture card but I did get the same type and model of splitter you have as well as an HDMI to USB stick as the capture card. Do you think that'll work OK?

Here is how I do it with Hauppauge The cable box OUT(My cable box has a 5 RCA type Composite video OUT so I do not need this stripper device) into HD PVR 2 model 1512 (about $139) The OUT from ‘HD PVR 2 model 1512’ INTO a USB port on a 15 year old computer. The software defaults to (and I have had the most success with) a .TS file A secondary input on the model 1512 is HDMI. With an $8 converter cable (RCA to HDMI) I have my VCR also hooked up to the model 1512 and can digitize my old video tapes.

I am currently trying to find a way of capturing OTA in 4k. My local stations are now broadcasting in atsc 3.0 and I do have a nice gaming rig, I just am having troubles finding a capture card with a atsc 3.0 tuner.

You should be able to use HDHomeRun with Plex or similar software.

I also have a USB video capture card connecting from a VHS VCR/DVD combo to a computer or a DirecTV cable box connecting to a computer using the audio/video selector where you can select them in order to record directly from.

An HDMI splitter will remove the copy protection as well
