Refreshing to hear a KZbinr finally warning folks about indiscriminately chopping out mids because they think that's what you're supposed to do. Seems like that's become internet doctrine over the years. Sure, it makes sense for some genres. But if you're wanting to lean into color and texture then you'll just be undoing all of the good stuff with these EQ moves. It's always funny to me seeing folks running their signals through tape and transformers and tubes (hardware and plugin emulations) for vibe, and then they'll just chop out all of that gorgeous harmonic buildup to make it sound more like a polished digital recording. Mids aren't always the enemy! A lo-fi cassette recording is the perfect time to embrace them. Your example does a great job of demonstrating this.

Hey! Cool stuff. I have a great tip for you too. You can actually set up RX as your main editor in Logic. This way, you can highlight a region and press SHIFT + W to open the file in RX, do your processing, and then overwrite the file from the RX file menu. Once you’re done, just close RX, and your region will be processed. It’s like using the standalone version, except you never really leave Logic.

Hey homie, wonderful video, how do you deal with sync issues caused by the small speed differences the tape plays back at when layering multiple tape recordings in your DAW?
@vvundertoneАй бұрын
its rough. I typically use this machine to color one shots. But in the case I am doing a longer stretch I try figure out how long it takes to fall out of sync and then stick to that duration. Or stay off the grid and base my song around the tape. Grid shouldn't always be law imo. I think it would be nice if someone could make a plugin one day in the realm of VocAlign for using tape!

@vvundertoneАй бұрын
what kind of tape are you using? This is happens regardless but by having a new high quality tape you can reduce the amount greatly. I have to get creative with how I handle this. Sometimes that means doing sections at a time. Once I see how long it takes to fall out of sync I know how long I can record. Or I might just do loops. And sometimes I even say screw the grid I'm going freestyle. Let it all weave in and out!

I wish bands where still a thing. What happened!! Okay I am a Logic user but I have to admit I hate the plugins. And as a drum sample creator don't get my started on Drummer. The thing is, how to transfer different tracks so to mix them digitally... because the motors will never roll exactly the same, so the whole would not fit exactly. Am I right? Not sure how to solve this 😥
@vvundertone8 күн бұрын
yes, this is an issue. In my work flow, I am often making samples. So what I do is short loops, or single chords. After that I will print whole mixes. But no I do not often process say a single electric guitar to tape and back to a digital session. But I will say that from what I have noticed some machines / tape handle it better than others. So if this is an issue for you make sure you use a fresh tape and a well maintained machine.

Another cool trick for color is getting really old thrift store cassettes, the jankier the better, putting paper in the corner record tab slots and recording to that. Insane wow n flutter. Cool video as always 🫡
@brianreederrАй бұрын
sounds very cool, could you elaborate?
@infacedgetoutАй бұрын
@@brianreederr some of these cassettes can date back to the 70s, degraded by time and being played. There is a small square open tab that prevents you from accidentally recording over these tapes but you can easily bypass that by putting a strip of scotch/medical tape or something similar, preferably something soft so little bumps don't really stick out. They'll often be fairly noisy, sometimes they'll even dirty up your pinch rollers/tape heads/etc quicker but you'll absolutely get a different sound that may be desirable to you! You can check for what type it is and any recommended bias settings on the cassette to make sure it's compatible with your machine and what you're looking for but you're mostly going to get Type 1 that can go in any machine
@brianreederrАй бұрын
@@infacedgetout thanks for the insight! I only started getting into tape in the last two years and I never got to experience them growing up so I appreciate the explanation
@TallstreehouseАй бұрын
@@brianreederr so prerecorded cassettes have these slots in the corners that don't allow the record mechanism to function (to prevent accidentally recording over an album) but if you fill those slots with something, it allows you to record over those cassettes. That's why blank cassettes have the break away tabs or lock switches in the corner--incase you don't want to record over it again.
@TallstreehouseАй бұрын
This doesn't apply to actual multitrack cassette recorders because they use a mirror and laser mechanism to sense the cassette tapes, but most cassette players have a little button in the corner and if that's pressed in, it'll allow the tape to be recorded over
