Hey. I just wanted to let you know, that I've been recording drum covers for a while and I have been using my tablet to record the drum covers and have been using a speaker to get the sound out. I've tried to find ways to make my videos better and ways to get the sound better. After I watched this video I ended up buying that iRig device. Just got it today and decided to give it a try. I plugged the iRig into my phone, plugged the guitar cable into iRig and into the drum module and plugged the aux cable to the iRig then to the drum module. Turned my camera on and pressed record. After I tested it out, I watched the recording and it worked. I couldn't be any happier because I found a way to make my drum covers better. I already recorded a drum cover with the device today as well. That being said, I want to thank you for introducing me into this idea. If it wasn't for you and this video, I wouldn't have known about iRig. So thank you again.

A tip for making sync easier: play some audio out from your module so your camera mic picks it up, then you have an audio reference for syncronising audio from the module direct feed and camera.
@RPSchonherr
@RPSchonherr 2 ай бұрын
If you record the midi and use the monitors instead of headphones the camera mic willl pick it up and you will have to sources to play with. Some people have a reamp that outputs to an ampliier which is mic'ed up to the interface. All kinds of ways you can do it.

Just FYI: You can use an interface (like the Focusrite Scarlet you were showing) with iOS devices, as well. You just need the appropriate USB Camera Connection kit (lightning or 30-pin), and a powered USB hub. Plug interface into the powered USB hub, connect the "output" of the hub into the camera connection kit, plug that into the iOS device.

I always set up about 3 cameras when I’m shooting drum covers. I use software called Pluraleyes that syncs all the tracks using the reference audio and master audio. In Final Cut Pro I just delete the reference audio after the sync is completed. That whole process takes less than 5 minutes. I can have a video up on KZbin a short time after that. It doesn’t take long at all. You offered some good tips. I had not thought about going right into my camera. I have a Sony A7iii and will try that next time.I also just picked up the iRig HD 2 so I can quickly post to social media a good sound coming from the Roland TD 11. The latest craze is folks doing “Duets” on Tik Tok and I want to have a good sound for doing those as well.

As usual @65drums makes the most informative videos answering all the basic questions in one go! Keep it up Justin! Still not sure how to sinc multiple cameras into one LIVE STREAM, I guess the only way is to use the Roland mixer to get the audio, but still that only covers one camera from my iPhone.

I made 2 drum covers back in 2010 of me playing 2 Chris Tomlin songs live at church with a cheap $20 Jaz camera from Big Lots and it's condenser mic. It was all in synch with no latency, and I got some nice responses and then I suddenly got 2 red flags from youtube, so I wrote them an email asking why and what can I do to fix it, but before I got a response I was banned! I see face book and IM postings of music (drums, guitar, etc.) covers with no crediting the artist, but youtube requires it. Why the difference? I want to make more but have always been apprehensive that it might happen again! Thanks Justin for all you do for us e-drummers!

EDIT: OK figured it out, the answer is very simple - just plug in another audio source into the aux on your brain (another phone, tablet, etc). How are you guys getting around the fact that the KZbin app (nor the Iphone camera) does not have a "run in the background" feature? For example, if I'd like to record a video of myself (on my phone using the IRig) playing along with a KZbin drumless track - how can I keep the track playing in the background and then open up the camera and record the video? Or are you downloading the audio track first?

There is another way - That I don't think you covered? Drum module out > inexpensive interface like The Miditech Audioface 2 > phone charging port. You have to have an otg enabled phone. To my knowledge most of these are stereo. The Miditech is an extremely handy little unit which is made for ios too. It's actually designed to record your fav old tapes /records onto iPad, but it works pretty well with Android too via the charging port for drum covers. The audio quality is very good. It gets its power from your phone. Then I use Power Director to edit the vdo. (Android) Also, your phone needs to have a decent camera (which most mid priced to high end phones have anyway) I use a Samsung Galaxy A50, and use Open Camera which is a far better app than the stock one. I also use a Huawei P9 Lite as a 2nd camera, it difficult to synch the Huawei with the sound which is recorded on the Samsung, but you get used to it pretty quickly. So with this you have 1080p or 4k and direct line in sound. You can also use Video mp3 Converter /Lexus Audio Editor (play store) to extract the audio for editing if necessary. This to me is the easiest way to do it. Also, using chroma key/green screen can also be a big help in changing the background to make it interesting.

Nice overview & great idea to cover. This will help a lot of people. Two notes though. 1. When you mention Laptops, you should talk about different ways, because with MacBooks you don’t need ASIO and you don’t have latency issues. 2. I don’t think you should recommend anything that limits creativity. KZbin is not always about just uploading a lot of stuff. As a musician, it’s about expressing yourself. You don’t go to your rehearsal room, play one song and then go home again either, do you? ;)

When covering so many things I knew I wouldn’t get every single tip in the video so thank you for bringing that up. As for your second point, before I said focus on less camera angles I stated it was a personal opinion. A complete beginner really shouldn’t attempt using 5 GoPros, while learning Adobe Pre, and figuring out cool lighting all on the first video. It’s overwhelming and most likely, there are many half finished drum covers sitting on countless drummers’ hard drives because of that. I was suggesting beginning simple.

I'm running a TD-11 module into a MacBook Pro 2009 (El Capitán) running Superior Drummer 3. I couldn't run a decent buffer without suffering latency issues. I ended up patching through a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 interface. This bypassed the onboard Apple soundboard and solved my problem. So, depending on your setup, it is possible to have latency issues with a Mac. Just FYI. Yes, upgrading to a new MacBook Pro would probably solve this but I can't budget that at the moment.

Reiner Rosin Good question. That was the first thing I tried and had issues also. I didn't have these problems with Superior Drummer 2. I think that SD3 is more intensive, requiring a better processor and sound board than my current MacBook Pro and TD-11 has.

Also, the Zoom Q8 camera is _incredible_ for this kind of thing -- 2 XLR inputs with preamps, and you can actually expand it to 4 XLR inputs with a separate input cartridge (EXH-6). The camera quality definitely isn't SLR, but it's GoPro quality for sure, but with MUCH better sound.

Great, informative video Justin. Might I add one note: Invest in some lights. They don't have to be expensive. Some budget, Chinese-made LED lights or soft boxes with stands. It'll make any video - cell phone or DSLR - much, much better. Most of us are making drum covers in a bedroom where lighting is pretty poor. Some strategically placed lights make all the difference

Thanks for the video. It was something I was wondering about. The Rockband idea is really good to know. One other benefit of those tracks are most of them are master tracks, so you’re actually playing along with musicians you may be a big fan of. Awesome sauce! I’m still stuck using a TD-3 for the time being, so you won’t be seeing any cover songs from me anytime soon. 8) You keep making videos and I’ll keep watching. Thanks again.

I wish there was a button to sync channel 1 and 2 input volume knobs on a sound card to computer. (lexicon alpha, now I use behringer umc202hd). To equalize volumes on my piano I would use a bass synth tone and on e drums it wasn't that hard. But some times you accidentally pressed the knobs or they just slightly become unequal of volume over a day or week. I will be using a 5 pin midi cable to usb now with VST software so this won't be a issue anymore.

Here is my thoughts about this topic and to your video: - I think the only really good working way to record drums for a cover is using a DAW (option #6 in your list). This gives you the chance to have different volume levels and content in your headphones and your final mix. E.g. on my headphones I like to add a click track and the original drum sounds (with lowered volume) and have my drums louder than the music and in the mix I only have the music and my drums mixed in the proper ratio - As an alternative to Reaper (60$) I can recommend Cubase LE. It's available for about 15 bucks on some magazine's DVDs. It has some basic mixing and effects and can handle MP3 audio as well. It even has some video features in it, but I am not sure whether they are intented for producing video clips - You mention a free drum VST. I guess you are talking about MT Power Drumkit 2? There is also a free version of DrumCore 3 floating around in the public. I think MT Power Drumkit 2 is sounding better, but for some music DrumCore 3 might work as well - Even with the onboard sound of a Windows laptop latency isn't a problem anymore with a free ASIO driver like ASIO4ALL from Steinberg. The main problem is the sound quality when using edrum headphones on a PCs headphone jack because of the different impedances. I am using the USB sound of my Roland TD-15. A cheap and acceptable alternative is the Behringer UCA202

Unfortunately I could not get my E-Drum (Roland HD1) recorded today. I have a Samsung S7. My camera cannot record the drum. Backing track comes from PC. May you can helpf me with this? The aim is shooting simple KZbin video from my drumming. Thanx in advance. :)

Really digging the part (and recently just experienced it) about going for less camera angles. I suspect with GoPros it's possible to just have to press 1 button from the laptop and activate all the different cameras while also having all the angles showing up on screen in real time. Trial and errors with camera angles, having to walk back to all cams, making sure there's enough space remaining and that they are armed is so energy/focus consuming. I'm always like : I hope I get it this time cuz I don't wanna have to redo the recording process ON TOP of recording a live performance which is already taxing.

The irig worked with my old phone, but not with the Note 10 + because of the annoying adapter needed since they took away our aux ports.

Thank you, man. I’m struggling with recording because my Roland td11 cause the driver don’t work great with Windows 10. Already have an I-rig but don’t knew that works. I definitely will go with this. I was also looking for some trs-trrs p2 cable. Anyway, thank you again, amazing video and very rich of information. You gained a subscriber.

Again loving this channel ! Anyway, Android users - like me (couldn't afford an IPhone) well i tried the iRig on 5 of those different android phones (my mom's, my dad's, my sis's, ......well u get the idea). ....and it didn't work at all. Ya so, i downloaded a 3rd party application like Cinema FV-5 (which doesn't have a flip-to-front cam but has a volume monitoring before recording function) and so i downloaded another 3rd party application call Camera MX (which have a flip-to-front cam but doesn't have a volume monitor before recording function)...well, u win some, u loose some right? but works well with me for having both apps at the same time running it with Androids :) Do set the mic to "external mic" for both apps.

This video alone made me subscribe to your channel. Now, I’m no newbie as far as music, audio recording, video recording or even video editing is concerned (in fact, I did think I even do a decent job with lighting, if you check out my latest video). So I do feel your video covered all necessary bases for anyone to get started. Many years ago, before the whole drum covers craze started, I even did a raw video shot on a handycam with room sound and the song synced in editing. Did its job just fine. So I also see value in the less is more approach. But because I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I do enjoy putting together a quality video, here’s a brief rundown of my setup, if it may help someone. (That’s the beauty of KZbin!) 1. At the root of it all, I use a converted mesh head TAMA kit with Remo heads on it, as well as Zildjian Gen16 cymbals. These are fabulous cymbals to get your thing on and not disturb your neighbors... too much. - 2. I trigger the heads with drum and other brand triggers and run them through a (discontinued?) Alesis DM Dock, which is connected via USB to my laptop running EZ Drummer 2. The Zildjian cymbals I run through the Zildjian Gen16 module. 3. I also use my iPad for the original tracks’ sound source from videos I find on KZbin. 4. I plug these three sources into a small mixing desk along with a Shure headset, for those times when I want to be teaching something and be heard with a nice quality. The phones output on the desk provides me with my personal mix (I love the Sennheiser HD202 headphones). 5. I output everything from the mixing desk Main through jack cables that I then connect to the Zoom Q8 (think GoPro if it came with professional audio connectors). This is the the final mix, so if anything sounds off, I’ll check the connections above or just re-record. Add a few GoPro-like off-brand cameras, sync up everything in editing and that’s it! Again, you can check out the final result on my latest drum cover on my recently launched channel. (Click my name). Hope it helped! Thanks for your video!
