PRODUCTS MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO:

I get so many emails and comments on a weekly basis asking how I record my electronic drums - so I decided to make an updated video on MY process of recording my drum covers.
**PLEASE NOTE: THIS METHOD IS FOR MIDI RECORDING AND NOT AUDIO RECORDING. I USE A VST PLUGIN THAT COMES AT AN EXTRA COST**
Can everyone please refrain from leaving negative comments on this video. I'm sure there's a million different ways to record electronic drums, but I'm simply showing you my method that works best for me.
In order to record your electronic drums properly, you will need:
- An electronic drum kit
- a USB cable
- A computer that is able to run a DAW
- A VST such as Superior Drummer, Addictive Drummer, Steven Slate etc.
Optional Extras:
- A USB audio interface
- A headphone extension cable
Easy steps:
1. Connect your module to the computer via USB Cable
2. Download your module driver from the manufacturer's website
3. Open up your DAW and launch your VST
4. Route the separate mic channels from the VST into the channels of your DAW
5. Map your electronic drums using the manufacturer preset or manually using the mapping module inside your VST.
6. Make sure you're getting the correct signals from each pad (i.e snare drum is showing in the snare drum channel of your VST etc etc)
7. Play your drums and record audio that doesn't sound shit!
Thank you for watching this video and I really hope you took something from it. My method is honestly so simple and it only takes around 20 minutes to set up properly. From then, you can simply use the project you've made as a template and you never need to do the set up process ever again!
Much Love,
Josh

If you want a stereo file to line up with your midi (fail safe to check your audio against the midi) use the L&R inputs from that audio interface. Set up a stereo track along with your midi track and arm it to record... I do it all the time (as a reference track) to make sure my midi matches with what the drummer plays. It also helps if there are ghostnotes triggering additional notes that are unwanted

This is great detailed information. I have a couple of questions. When you were gigging, did you use edrums or acoustic drums. If and when you used edrums live, did you use software or the module. Was latency an issue... again great info, I appreciate you posting this. I finally broke down and got a new computer this year so it may be time for me to start learning to use software. Hope you have a nice weekend

Hi Steve, thanks for the kind words! So I have only used my electronic drum kit live once or twice, and that was back when I had my jobeky set up (so years ago!) The first time I used the module sounds, and the second time I brought a laptop out with me and used superior drummer. Latency wasn't an issue that time! Ah that's great - let me know how you get on!

Holy cow this is awesome! Great video! I've got a cheap Alesis Turbo I use to practice while my acoustic is in Seattle. I've just started into midi and it is daunting! So much hardship just to record. I'm having a problem with the hat triggering the right sound with pedal operation. It looks like it isn't an issue in SD? Or should I be able to map any drum VST to make the right sound at the moment of operation (vice getting the right open or closed hi-hat sound in post)?

Hello and thanks for your comment! So midi mapping is normally required for most electronic drum kits (especially with the hi hat). If you search 'midi mapping in VST' or 'Hi Hat Triggering Superior Drummer', chances are you'll be greeted by many great videos explaining how to get the trigger response smoother. Hey Vincent! Yes of course. Here's a video that my good friend Mike Luke made a while back about perfectly mapping your hi-hat inside of superior drummer 2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epKcY2SLq5uNj7c Normally, the only real mapping issues you would encounter are from the hi hat. Generally speaking, I've never had any real issues with the mapping for the drums and cymbals. The hi-hat is a common sticking point however since there's so many nuances in sound that need to be mapped perfectly to get the most authentic experience. Hope this helps Vincent and thanks for watching!

Hey Josh, a big reason I would want to set something up like this is to improve the drum sound quality not only in a recording, but as I play live (in my room using headphones). By using a VST and listening to the input through my computer, is this something I can feasibly use to have great sound on my drums while playing them? Or would latency be too much of an issue and this technology is only used in the recording itself? Thanks for the video!
@JoshCameron

Hi Lucas and thanks for your comment. The VST will 100% give you a better drum sound with minimal lag. Ever since I was introduced to the world of VST's, I stopped using the internal module sounds all together... even when I was just practicing. @JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for your comment! I'm not actually too sure how you do that one. It would depend on the number of outputs you have on the back of the module I believe!
@danpiersonaudio
@danpiersonaudio 4 жыл бұрын
This can be tricky without individual outputs, but not impossible!... What you can do is record the MIDI into your DAW and then playback each drum track in solo and simultaneously record the drum module audio output - for example, record a performance so that you have it in MIDI then create a stereo audio input... Solo your first drum track in your DAW, i.e the kick. When you play this kick, you can route it to play back on your drum module, like you would a synthesizer sound module - then just record the module output in real time and repeat for each drum/cymbal!

I too would like to record the midi info but hear my module's sounds. So far demonic sweater's example of recording both midi and audio at the same time is as close as I've seen. But I wonder if importing samples from module to laptop is going to be the ultimate answer.

Hi Josh. I just had the thought. Would the midi notes have different volumes if I was to record directly from the module? I just found the cymbals on the mt powerdrumkit program i used were a bit quiet. I started to think I was better off recording straight from the td50 module

You can always change the volume of each sound you’re triggering inside the VST software!

Question... so how would you play to a song using this method? Would you plug your phone into the module and go from Spotify? Where do headphones need to be plugged into? Getting my e kit in the mail by end of next week and am super excited.

Austin Mills Hey Austin! How are you? Great question.... so in order to play along to songs, I simply download the track and then drag and drop it into the DAW. It will automatically create a track for the song and then you can play along to it all within there. Hope that makes sense! What e-kit are you getting?🤪

I’m stuck for some reason. I have the USB AB cable to connected to my module and my computer, I’m pretty sure I have my module driver downloaded (Alesis is weird), and I’m using audacity. I can get any audio from my module to playback on my computer

Hey Josh, great video! Question: I have a TD-9 module, and it doesn't have the usb-computer port that you showed on yours BUT it does have just a normal USB port on the top. Is that fine/the same thing?
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David thanks for leaving a comment. I wouldn't be too sure to be completely honest. I don't know whether you can send a signal through the normal USB port that's the only thing. Only way to truly know is to give it a try I guess!

Midi to USB should do the job for the TD9. On most forums people mention the Roland UM ONE MK2 when it comes to the TD9. I can't verify this as I don't have it yet, mine should come in tomorrow.

I have a DD400+ drum module would that work? I cant find how to download so it would pick up the signal like you did with the Roland or do I not need to download anything other than a DAW. Thanks
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel , thanks for your comment and sincerest apologies for the delay in responding to your question.... unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to help there. The manufacturers website should have all available drivers listed under “updates and drivers” however the DD400+ module isn’t from one of the bigger brands so I wouldn’t be sure how it would work for that one. Sorry about that!

Say I wanted to record myself playing on my E kit over a Foo Fighters song. How do I set it up so my program records everything and not just what im playing on the kit?
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, the best way to do this would be to load the Foo Fighters song inside your DAW and then play along to it as your drum track is recording. Otherwise you'd have to record as Audio instead of MIDI and play the song with the AUX input on the module and you won't get great results that way. Hope this helps!
