Like everyone else here, I'm also blown away by this series. The production value, the presenter, the education on sound, the attributes of the various mics with guided instruction on what to listen for. I really would love to see tons more like this. I decided years ago I didn't want a tlm 102 but this series blew me away at how it performed on the amp. It sounded wonderful. Now I'm revisiting my decision to pick one up.

Excellent information besides this guy explain it very very well, thanks Neumann, by the way i use a tlm102 infront of a 4x12 cab for my guitar, and it sounds huuuuuge for rock, i am really pleased, no need for the classic shure sm57, and like he said, i use the same mic for vocals and acoustic guitar, it's a pleasure this microphone i really really enjoy it.

Great videos, great production quality, congratulations! For a next video I recommend doing a high-gain metal sound, because it is a way harder situation with the high gain fizz -> it can sound very dull without it and can be very harsh with no definition with two much with it.

Would have liked to seen other mikes besides super expensive Neumans. The SM57 should have been there for instance. Sennheiser 609E etc. and maybe a Cascade Fat Head ribbon mike as well.

I agree these are the best quality tutorials I've watched anywhere. Thanks so much for them! So helpful. Especially for home studio guys like me. I have a question: can you cover recording an amp that has two speakers? I have a Fender Twin Reverb, for instance, and I'm not sure how all these techniques would apply.
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Basically, the same applies to an amp with several speakers as to a single speaker amp (proximity effect etc.). But there are a few things you have to consider: Crosstalk: The further away the microphone is from the amp, the more it records both speakers. This means that the signals of both speakers overlap and some frequencies are amplified, others cancel each other out. If you don't want that, you get close to one of the speakers, so that its signal clearly dominates. This is the standard procedure for live recording. But it can also be desired to capture exactly this superimposition, since it belongs to the sound of the amp / speaker. You go further away and look for a position where the microphone captures the amp sound the way you hear it in the room (see "dummy" head trick). Stereo: Some guitarists play with stereo speakers, where the speakers get different signals. To capture this, you have to remove both speakers (today this is done rather rarely as it was more of a 90's habit). Different speakers: Some guitarists like to experiment and build different speakers into one amp. Here, you also have to find out which one sounds best for the desired sound and mike it. Or incase you want to capture the different sounds of the speakers, then you mike both speakers again. You can also use various microphones and alternating positions to highlight those differences.
@DerMensch1
@DerMensch1 4 жыл бұрын
Georg Neumann GmbH Great answer. Thank you. Yes, what I want to do is capture the sound of the amp that I hear in the room, so that tip about the superimposition is great! I hadn’t thought of it in that way, so that’s very helpful. I tend to like the not-so-produced sound of a guitar in a big hall. Like in a place like the Meistersaal in Hansa TonStudios, for instance, à la bands like The Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution or Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (their early stuff), etc. Very raw and very much a part of the room. I just bought a ribbon mic for amp recording and I had thought about placing it close while using a condenser further away. I may still try that, but your reply and this video helped me understand what I should be listening for. I am pretty new to all of this, and that’s why these videos are so great! Thank you very much again for taking the time to reply.

I rarely ever comment on KZbin (yes... I’m one of ‘those guys’) but this series is simply fantastic and has too notch production value to boot! I’ve dabbled in home recording with software like Pod Farm, Bias FX simply out of having no idea what mic does what, what mic sounds the best, how far to put the mic etc, so this series has been such a massive help in lowering the knowledge barriers for me to start mic’ing up my amp. I play bass guitar too so would love to see something on how to mic a bass amp properly. I would assume it’s very similar, but nonetheless, would have some differences. Keep up the great work guys 👌🏻👍🏻

I wanted to love the Neumann's but there is a subsonic thump in the condensers for lead that is not pleasant in my ears Probably great for miking a bass shy blue or an h anniversary because it will reduce the ice picking upper mids of said speakers while augmenting the bottom

I have a TLM 103 and I use it to record amplifiers, but sometimes I'm afraid of high gain levels that it receives from the amplifiers, can it spoil? Is there any parameter I should follow, any tips?!! Excellent video, great
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Silvio, you won't overload the TLM 103 with an amp and you can't break the mic with it either. You would hear if something distorts and then it is only the microphone preamplifier that is overloaded.

All these tutorials, including other KZbin posts from guitarist, all make the same mistake if you would by NOT playing something simple that we are all FAMILIAR with . . That would be much more easier on our ears and brain to process than some ambiguous riff and some senseless noodling . I don’t get it , he has a Tele with different sounds , yet he doesn’t play a few STONES riffs ? I dunno , maybe it’s me 🤔🙄
