I have been recording on a home studio set up (of various configurations, depending on the iteration and budget of each iteration). Today, I ran across your video series and have watched them, up to this point, in their entirety. While a lot of what you cover is review I have learned a lot about WHY I have come to use the techniques I have picked up, over the years. It's great to learn the mechanics and physics of various techniques. Now, I can take what I have learned, up to Lesson 6, and continue to do what I love with more confidence and a greater understanding of the "how" AND the "why" of studio recording. Thank you for your efforts on these videos. I have enjoyed them to this point and can't wait to watch, further!

I am currently using a CAD gxl 2400 condenser mic (do you have any opinions on this mic?) and am looking to upgrade. I'm looking for the highest quality, most versatile microphone I could buy in the $400 dollar range. I mainly record hip-hop and R&B vocals, along with acoustic guitar. I would be so grateful if you could throw a couple recommendations my way! Thanks again for helping all of us out!

Warren, thanks for the tips. I'd love to see your take on recording violin and brass. I find that when I'm recording strings, mic placement makes a huge difference depending on what feel, and emotional dynamic the strings are going for. An example would be close mic for parts with a lot of attack (Think Elenor Rigby) so they really pick up the bow / rosin sound, and attack. Also, since I'm often layering my own strings I'll emulate depth of field by doubling parts at increasing distances from a large condenser mic to add that orchestral depth.

Hi Warren! Huge fan of yours here. Thanks to your videos my recordings got so much better. Right now I'm recording a lot of folk/country music where the acoustic guitars are very important. My question is for the acoustic guitar mic placement. I tend to record each guitar take as a XY stereo pair (as you show in this video), but you said you would use it only in singer/songwriter songs. The songs I am recording are not just one guitar and a singer but more of a whole band (bass, keys, guitar, lead vocal, harmonies) songs. Should I switch from recording the guitars with the XY stereo technique to one mic mono placement somewhere around 12-14th fret (as you show in your other video)? If not, should I keep the stereo pair always hard left, hard right? Because sometimes I think I get some weird artifacts and I'm not sure if it's the mic placement technique or if I'm doing something wrong somewhere else (for example when doubling the guitars and using the XY stereo pair). Thanks a lot for your answer, would appreciate your advice so much! Greetings from Czech Republic!

You have a very laid back approach which I like. Nothing's a big deal. Throw the mic up. If it sounds good, you're good to go. If not, move it. Don't fret too much about other sounds in the room or bleed... Just get a sound you like an go. It's a refreshing change from the super-anal approach where people want to record instruments in an anechoic chamber. Also, your approach and attitude I'm sure keep stress levels a lot lower during the session. Thanks for the video!

Hi +Peter van der Plaat That's a great question! I am going to try out that Lewitt Mic, the REX640 I think? That has a dynamic and a condenser and is deigned for Kick to give you accurate phase/polarity but create the click and the low end thud at the same time. I heard Bob Thorn use it the other day at his studio and it sounded great! I see the Audio Technica is the same idea so I expect there will be similar results. If you own the guitar cab Like a 4x12 take the back off and Caulk all the joints even take the plastic handles off and caulk them then re-screw, it really tightens up the tone big time and gets rid of rattles.. while its open tighten up the speakers as well, they vibrate and get loose. s136.photobucket.com/albums/q170/silverfrost1/f5c57663.jpg

Great video, answers many basic questions for us guys that are new to recording...I look forward to trying out your techniques. Thank you for all that you share! I was wondering if you have any experience with the Western Electric 639B (Known as "The Birdcage")? I found one for like $10 bucks, and picked it up. I read up on the history, and found that they were pretty ground-braking microphones, (and worth quite a bit, too) but I have not been able to find any references to them being a desirable vintage studio microphone. I was thinking it might be useful in some way, perhaps a high quality utility microphone? If not, I still like it as an interesting center piece...it's a really nice looking piece of gear!

Produce Like A Pro Good to know! I don't have any multi-pattern mics currently, and had been reading up/checking out the LCT 640 and the Mojave MA301fet. I have an MA200 and MA101fet which I am very pleased with, thought they're both cardioid only, so I'm "shopping" for multi-patts. I don't have a pair of any of my mics, yet, and getting a pair of multi's seems the most sensible path. I assume you have lots of mics, and that would be a good video, comparing the common studio staples to the newer imported options.

Warren I have a gear question. I'm a drummer whose recently got into recording. M guitarist has a line 6 spider 4 half stack. We went into guitar center together and it seemed to be one of the best half stack amps they had and she wanted to upgrade from her small amp she had. So we bought for bout 900 bucks. The other day we noticed a lot of people are saying bad things about line 6. The amp sounds pretty good to us and with some Eq, compression, and chorus with studio one we seem to get pretty decent sounds. Would we get better tones to work with using a different brand amp with a tube? Now we are looking into a smaller tube amp for recording in our studio, do u have any good recommendations?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +Larry Tate Thanks for the great comment! That's a huge question! The Line 6 is extremely flexible and offers a huge amount of sounds for a very low price, however I agree there is nothing better than playing through a real tube amp, but you are obviously not going to get that huge amount of tonal options that you get with the Line 6. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Thanks for the feedback. I noticed line 6 actually has new tube amp called the dt 50. It has the tube plus a lot of the extra technology side stuff for extra sounds. Have you tried it by chance? Can you recommend a good lil tube amp for recording? We'd like to keep at or under $ 1,500 if possible.

Hi +Larry Tate I love my Fender Pro Junior, I use it every day and I think it cost me $250? Also the Vox AC15 is amazing! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren. Have you ever used the Beta 57 and do you like it over the regular 57 or the same/less for miking guitar cabs? Im interested.

Hi +Jak Leyton Great question! Never liked the Beta for guitars, a little too harsh in the mids for me, however some people like it. Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

+Jak Leyton - Beta 57 & 58 were one of my least successful mic purchases! Couldn't believe how little use I found for them compared to "regular" 57/58s. Personally, I use the old sennheiser 400 series microphones on cabs (MD-405/408/409, all the same capsules). They sound really great, and are nicely different than the standard SM57 sound...

Hi +Samos12 Yes Beta's sound quite harsh, hard to describe, but not very musical at all! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

I have a question (one remedy i will try is new xlr cables) I feel like my sound is sort of Lo Fi and I want to change that. I use various amps usually vintage, vox and fender other random amps. I use a soundcraft 6000 and a neumann tlm 107 into a focusrite scarlett, I just sort of feel like the segments of the sound pyramids arent filling their role as well as they could. The lows maybe aren't holding up their end of the bargin or the highs sound a little "cheap" if you will. I've tried quite afew things like different micing techniques isolating techniques with eq without eq amps set to 5 5 5, different gain focuses like more amp less gain on the board and vice versa etc etc and I still do not feel satisfied. Am I only not satisfied because I dont have a whole bunch of rack mounts making everything sound great, at what point are we splitting hairs and a what point are we getting a better tone, I need to make sure I am doing everything I can with what I have. I have also tried to reduce signal paths and expand them in different ways I have for tonal refrence My previous recordings, DI just through my ipod and nothing else (i found they sounded great) my 10/10's being various beatle records, king crimson in the 1st and 3rd iterations, tame impala, pink floyd and just a whole bunch of stuff really. I guess really what im looking for is transparency, what i am hearing is what is being recorded, I am not opposed to coloring like say this mic gives a sparkle or this over here gives this. just clear, uninhibited

I noticed that you are getting a buzz from your cabinet, like we all do, but I was wondering if you deal with it, or does it just get lost in the mix at the end of the day?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +Jak Leyton Great question! Yes I will definitely work on the proximity effect to lessen the buzz! Some times it's fine in a dense mix! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

+Produce Like A Pro Sorry, that wasn't a criticism. I was actually asking how you can avoid a natural buzz and you pretty much answered my question I think. So if you have a bit of a buzz, you should back the mic up from the cabinet to adjust for it? Great

I actually asked this question in Vimeo too, but recording an upright piano, is it always better to have the piano open from the front as you have here for better sound quality? or is there that much difference?
@Producelikeapro

Hi +henri samppala Great question! I do like the piano opened up for that for most times, however I love closing the front and miking down from the top! Experiment have fun with it!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

The amp and acoustic sounded great....that piano though...no matter how good your micing ...I think you`d be polishing a terd....unless your looking for that sound...and in that case it`s all good.
