How to record via USB with your BOSS RC-505 and how to set it up! | Tutorial

In this video I wanted to show you how to setup the BOSS RC-505 USB Modes. In a lot of my video I refer to how you can use the BOSS RC-505 as an Audio Interface, yet have never show you how to achieve this. So I thought I'd finally explain it, in case you were interested.
The second mode is Mass Storage, which is very import for keeping backups of your RC-505. If you are interested in the process of how to backup or load in sample to your BOSS RC-505 Loop Station. Let me know in the comments section and I will make a video.

How do use a laptop with a bunch of vsts as the wav sound source (not a midi fan boy if recording live loops), output from that into the looper then back in to the laptop to record as looped wav stereo track. Either use two laptops or some kind of aux out?

Hi Ben, thank you for this insightful video. I have an extremely basic question that may be too elementary that no one on the internet assumed it would be of interest. I’m using my RC-505 as an interface (AUDIO/MIDI), which is connected to my mic and my desktop. What I want to achieve is simply being able to make loop cover video with decent audio quality, which I guess I’d have to have my loop sounds in my PC. But my DAW seems like it’s simply picking up sounds from my mic, but none of the RC-505 loopings I’m doing. Basically: how do people with great loop covers out there transmit loop sounds from RC-505?

I managed to connect rc to my daw, but have a problem: microphone signal is recognized both as input 1 and input 2. Same is for guitar. So when I record something, I put track 1 input as input 1 and track 2 input as input 2. I get the same sound on both tracks. I would like to have it separated - mic going only to track 1, and guitar only to track 2. Does somebody have expirience with this kind of stuff? Is it possible to set it like that? Thanks!

Anyone know how to turn off mic monitoring on the RC-505 directly? When I am using my DAW to record vocals with my Loopstation as the audio inferface I get dual mic monitoring. I want to be able to hear the feedback of the mic monitoring from my DAW only. But I get double and with latency.

I've only used it with Ableton lite, but I am able to use it like a regular interface in that program. No drivers or extras required, I just select it as my input.

Thanks for doing this video as you promised, and as I have requested. The 2nd part of the problem for me still unresolved is this: I have installed the driver but the rc505 only shows up on the Mac when usb storage is selected, once you change selection to midi/audio you no longer see it on MAC and neither is it showing up under audio settings of DAW. I am using GarageBand as DAW and have Catalina on my MAC. Please experiment on this from your end if this will work and let me know.

Hey Ben, 135 subscribers! Woot! My question: coming out of your laptop to your mixer, do you like to go USB to RCA, or to 1/4"? If it is to 1/4", do you put each on a separate channel and pan one hard left and the other hard right?

Thanks Steve!! Currently I like to run 1/4” cables into my regular audio interface. Just for stability in a Live Performance Stage situation. I do put both in separate channels, 1 for Left and 1 for Right. That’s a very good question!! I don’t pan them. I keep them centred, as heard in my recent looping performance videos. I don’t think panning them is necessary? As the signal is split already between each cable.

usb a to b, (normal usb to square shaped usb, you can usually repurpose the one plugged into the printer that ran out of ink years ago ;-P)

I don't believe you need a pc to use it only to record/store songs for ableton etc. It seems to have some internal storage but to take your experience to the next level you will need a pc

I’ve got everything running correctly through ableton and can hear all of my loops and instruments playing through my monitors and headphones through ableton. What I am not understanding through is are just sending your out for FOH straight from the Boss RC 505? When I do this I can only hear the loops playing but no live instrument playing. So it must be looped before it’s heard playing back. This gets rid of any soloing or just the audience hearing the buildup as I go.

@@luanacarp4106 Hey! :) sorry for the late response. Have you had any luck? I ended up running a single cable from the mono output into the mic/instrument input on my interface (id14). Then going into my DAW configuration settings and naming both input and output RC-505. I was then able to record in Ableton, not sure if this way emits the best quality though. Open to other methods if that one lacks optimum quality 👊

Yes sure no problem! You need to switch out the usb mode inside the system settings tab. Change it from Mass Storage to Audio/MIDI that should solve this issue. All the best, Ben

you need to loop back the audio from the mic to your output device (the RC505 in your case). On windows this can be done in the Audio settings -> recording -> select the mic you want -> properties -> listen -> and then check "Listen to this device" and select the OUT from the RC505 as Playback device. If that was too complicated to follow I can make you a short tutorial video... just let me know :)

oh, but sidenote: you might get some noticeable delay when using a mic like that... I'd always recommend plugging it into the looper directly (possibly via aux?)

@@simonhill2263 Hey Simon, yeah man, it took me awhile to figure out how to sync up my Roland jd xi, Rc 505 and computer...Here's what I did...I have a midi cable going from the Roland JD XI midi out into the RC 505 midi in, then the usb cord from the RC 505 going into the laptop or computer. Once that is connected, I also have my audio out from the Roland JD XI going into the RC 505 audio input left and right with two ts cables...The really tricky part is that you have to go into the System menu, scroll to Sys: USB Mode and select Audio Midi, then go to Sys: Midi Sync and put that on auto for when you want to record pattern/midi based sequences into the Rc 505...There is alot of stuff you have to do though...if you tell me specifics of how your setup is, I will do my best to help, then what I do is go into the memory settings, scroll to Play:Target Track 1 for track one, 2 for track two, etc to record into those tracks, but first you have to keep scrolling over to Assgn1 Source, and put that on Sync Start/Stop, scroll over to Assgn1 Src Mode, put that on Moment, scroll over again to Assgn1 Target, and put that on TGT TR REC/PLAY...And remember, whatever you have the Play: Target Track, in the Memory settings set to, that is the track that will be recorded. Listen, hit me back with what your having trouble with and I will do my best to guide you...Hey, check out the video here on my channel named In The Land of the Lost, I just did this with the JD XI and the RC 505...Watch that and hit me back...

I am creating tracks (using the 5 loop pads on RC 505) and just want to save these and upload to laptop. I am a real novice so I apologise if my query is really basic. @@simonhill2263 Yeah Simon, up until about a year ago, I had no idea what I was doing with any of this syncing up hardware stuff. It took me a long time to learn, through videos and tutorials on youtube and other platforms, to know how to do alot of these things. If you have your RC 505 hooked up with your computer, whatever DAW you have, you would need to go into options, midi/audio settings, enable your RC 505, then in your mixer, select a track besides the master, for your input, click on the RC 505, make sure the record is armed, and then your ready to go...I have FL Studio 20, I don't know if you have a DAW or not, but in order to get your songs or tracks into a WAV file, or to be able to listen to it on your laptop or computer, you will have to either use your DAW or some other software/hardware to record into, and then export those tracks/song into a WAV file or whatever you want to turn it into. This was all VERY confusing to me a couple months ago, and believe you me, I have been studying and learning how to do these things probably 3 months out of the year, because it takes alot of time to learn these type of things when there is nobody there to teach you. If you have ANY questions, I will do my best to answer them. I am always here, and never be afraid to ask. Very helpful! One issue I ran into - the 505 says USB "memory idling". If you just select 'OK' it will allow to proceed to selecting it as an interface! Hope this helps someone :)

Yes it is possible mate! As I said before it’s a driver support issue on the latest Mac OS. It’s not just BOSS having this issue. various other brands I own are. I would highly suggest emailing BOSS customer support, they might have a beta driver or solution they could give you. I don’t have any other solutions for you at this current time.

When making drum/percussion loops on the RC505, I use the TR8s to make the drumming bits that I feed into the RC505, and record it a set tempo. Usually ok. But as soon as I change tempo of the looped drum on the RC505, it all sounds weird/erratic and un-natural. The question is: How can I make the sound of my music un-affected/un-altered when I change tempo down or up (to the original recorded tempo) on the RC505. Thank you

Yes, basically can transfer any file up to 7-10 second loop, on about 3,6 gb drive memory! I just tryied it yestaday and gonna work on some beat sequence!

Make sure your BOSS RC-505 is running Firmware 2.0. The only problem it could be is what I mention in the video about driver issue on the new Mac OS. The reason it is showing up on Mass Storage mode, is because no driver is need for that mode to work. This supports my reason for it being a driver issue on the Catalina Mac OS. I’d suggest trying to contact BOSS Customer Support and tell them what you told me. Hopefully they will be able to assist you further. I wish you the best of luck. All the best, Ben
